I flew to Barbados on the 25 November to join Aurora 26 November and I will be on board until Honolulu on the 1 February 2012. Aurora is currently 13 nights into her 36 Night Caribbean and Panama Canal Cruise from Southampton - it's longer than a leg of the Round World Cruise! Our big sister ship Azura was also in port and as I had never been on board this was a great opportunity to visit my good friend and colleague Executive Purser Kathy Jones. Bless Kathy, even thought it was a turnaround day for Azura Kathy insisted in giving me a tour of the whole ship - it took us two hours non stop and we covered all passenger and crew areas of the ship! Azura is beautiful - big but in a nice way and it will be a great ship to do the 2013 Round World Cruise on - especially for those of you who are still working would like to be more adventurous, doing a fly cruise leg of the Round World Cruise and see some new and fascinating far flung places! I can now say I have been in Brodies, The Glass House, Seventeen, Sindu and all the other places that our passengers keep raving to me about when they talk about Azura - I can now say I have been there!
I was most impressed with the Glass House on Azura provides a warm and welcoming space in which to relax a while. Divine dishes such as Hampshire Lamb with Rosemary, Homemade Sausages with Grain Mustard Mash, and Prime North Atlantic Cod Fillet in Cider Batter will satisfy the gastronome in us, while the wine menus, complete with tasting notes compiled by wine expert Olly Smith, will appeal to the connoisseurs and quaffers alike. Olly surfed the world to pick out 32 unique wines for Azura's Glass House.

The last part of anything good and happy is always tinged with sadness, not because you want to keep it going but because of the happiness and joy created, shared and memories that will last a lifetime! It has been a great challenge for me to write the first blog for P&O Cruises and I would like to thank Philip Price our Marketing Director for entrusting me to do so at the time - some three years ago when I was Executive Purser on board Arcadia. Since then there have been some great blog posting and for me the greatest pleasure was sharing the magical moments of P&O Cruising with you and capturing the 'unforgettable moments' of travel and milestones in people's lives - both passengers and ship's company. I have leaned so much more about the ports of call and the countries we have visited, hopping on shuttle buses, waving down taxis, taking shore excursions, walking on foot - you name it we were there! . I enjoyed capturing the atmosphere and architecture of many places with my digital camera, following by the task of sifting through them to get the best ones, resize them and get them loaded up via the internet onto the blog, getting them positioned correctly and in some sort of reasonable order - this is not a fast process! Finding the words was never difficult for me and they just roll off my mind as I type at my office computer. It is great to know that so many of you loved the passion for cruising that came through in my reports and in this world of gloomy news reports I always endeavoured to keep the blog 'light' and lively. I enjoyed reading you messages and even replying to them! |
As will most of us in the work place there are more demands on our time than ever and after three years I realised that I could not keep on giving the blog the same amount of time that it really needed from me, as in my exciting role of Executive Purser you just never know what the day will bring that will put extra demands on my time. Many of my colleague EP's marvelled that I could do it at all! Of course I could not have done it without the support of my colleagues and in particular people like Port Presenter Graham Howell, and Eileen Mann who were my roving reporters on the Round World Cruises and Grand Voyages - we had great camaraderie as we gather the information to write the blog posts. I never thought of myself as a travel writer before! Where would we be without our loyal followers and regular comments from Elaine ( Aururabore), Geoff Witts in Perth WA, Allan Gebbie ( whom I bumped into on board Azura!! - hello to all the Gebbie Clan in Troon) and Mary K to name and............the list is endless....! My thanks also to all the other people who filled in along the way, Nigel, Jo and Graham to name a few.....
Good bye www.jamescusick.co.uk - it's been fun. Looking forward to the new style blog for P&O Cruises at
www.discoverpocruises.co.uk. Here everyone both ship and shore will be contributing to postings, telling you their own stories, and sharing special moments with you to keep up your excitement, and keep you booking a P&O Cruises Holiday! I know you all like to know about the inside view of life at sea on board our ships and 'behind the scenes' in our shoreside office. Good Luck

Best wishes,
James

Good Evening James
It is sad that the blog will be no longer, but it is nice that you have taken the time to write one last time.
Hope to bump into you on one of the great white P&O ships sometime and have a chin wag. News from Perth is that we have had massive bushfire's in the Southwest of our great state, Margaret River and some other picturesque spots were ravaged by the fires, some 39 properties or so were lost, But thanks to the brave men and women of the fire brigade and volunteers, no lives were lost.
it is the official start of summer tomorrow here so not looking forward the heat to come over the next few months.
Off on Arcadia in March have already booked a tour in Bali so counting down the months.
Take care.
Regards to all on Aurora.

James, I have enjoyed all the blogs written under this www, but enjoyed your writings most of all.
Thank you for putting the time in to that.
Thanks also to all other bloggers, whose words and pictures brought the world to us.
Great to see you blogging again James, I have missed your wonderful penmanship, but so sad to hear that this blog is being closed. I have tried to make a post in the new one but for some reason it wont let me post there, saying select a profile, but nothing happens when I click on select profile, oh well not to worry.
Looks like this will be a wonderful cruise on the beautiful Aurora (my favourite Ship).... Looking forward to following the new blog. (Even if I cant post in it)...
Cheers
Scottylass (MaryK)
James, just like to say how much we have enjoyed your blog written by yourself and colleagues. It is a shame that all good things must come to an end.
Jan & Pete
Thank you james for the enormous effort that you put into the blog -I wondered how long it would last -You have a very busy job and I'm not surprised that it had to be given up....keep on cruising and being the super EP that you are!! Sara
Hi James
I have followed your blog since you started writing as we were invited to one of your Executive Purser parties on Arcadia back in 2007, I have found your writing really interesting since the blog has been going.
Its quite amazing I have an old news paper poster on my wall here of the old Canberra "Il Piccolo" "Trieste Welcomes Canberra". My Great Aunt and Uncle brought that poster back for me years ago from one of the trips when they sailed on the Canberra, from that moment i wanted to go cruising! The same Great Uncle in onboard Aurora now on the 36 night Caribbean cruise,
I wish you well and hope to bump into you on a ship again one day.
Craig

Hi James,
Was so excited to see you back on the blog, only to read that it is to be no more!!I'd like to thank you most sincerely on behalf of Peris & myself for al the hard work you've put into it over the years. We've thorouglly enjoyed our voyages with you. We were on Azura in the Summer and enjoyed it but not as much as the smaller ships, so we're happy to report that the gang will be onboard Aurora next Summer.Hope to meet up with you at that time.
Kind regards,
Norma
Hi James, you are living my dream. your so encouraging iam hoping one day i get on the ship. i wish you all the best journey.
I have really enjoyed our blogs and indeed those of the guest bloggers. I can quite see why you find it more and more difficult to find time to keep the blog up. I have just returned from Azura and am cross I missed seeing you on board - I was on the ship all day that day.
Best wishes going forward and hope to see you on a cruise soon.
Thanks again for some great stories
Jean
Hi James, just catching up on here after the run up to christmas. Well our christmas was most certainly different - for the first time in lord knows how many years we gave cruising a miss! And boy did Mr B miss it - don't get me wrong I enjoyed spending time with Natalie and Darren whilst we stayed in a nice hotel (if somewhat really badly organised, made me realise what a good job you guys do onboard - even though some just seem to moan about it) in Christchurch (Dorset, not New Zealand) - Those that moan should have come away with us to the hotel we stayed in - you would soon see that the ships are run very well indeed. I hear you guys had a rather interesting christmas cruise - lots of poorly passengers (and some staff no doubt). NV is very prevalent in society at this time of year - it's a shame it had to rear it's ugly head onboard the christmas cruise. But I have been told by several people that were onboard that it was handled very well. We were originally booked on Aurora, but transferred to Arcadia when Natalie's leave plans had her going there, but things earlier on in the year took an amazing change (as you know) and Natalie is now happily living in Somerset with her boyfriend and working for a company in Crewkerne. Keep your fingers crossed James, I may one day become the mother of a bride - but I mustn't get too ahead of myself (naughty Mummy B)!! Lol - But for now they are very happy :-) Someone who was on the christmas cruise said that Natalie was sorely missed!! When someone tells you that you have to be proud - she was very good at her job with P & O - even if I do say so myself!! Anyway, I am sad to see the end of your blog - I know just how hard you guys work onboard and will never complain (never have to date - oh that's not strictly true is it - Mr B's shirt on Arcadia, I think that's the only time I've had to take anything further than reception)!! And even then I didn't really complain (like some can complain)! I'm going to miss your blog - the others just aren't the same James!
Anyway, our next cruise now is on Azura in July for the 175th anniversary cruise - want to give Azura a try and I always find the Canaries cruise ideal for checking out a particular ship. We are then back on Aurora for Christmas. I hope we get to see each other in the future anyway James. I have lots of fond memories and have made lots of friends over the years both onboard and through Natalie - I did miss my P & O family this christmas, but you can't beat the real thing once in a while :-)
Thanks for taking the time (I can't believe it's 3 years) to do this blog - you've kept many of us avid cruisers going through the winter months reporting back from the world cruises - which I hope one day Mr B and I will be fortunate enough to do.
You are a star :-)
Love and best wishes for 2012
Elaine (aurorabore)
Hi James, its Barbara from Taunton again.
I have been wondering what had happened to your blog and am sorry that it is changing, I really used to enjoy your regular notes from home and afar away.
We have just returned from Ventura in the Caribbean and had a great time even though our bags were flown to Manchester. We now look forward to our 'special' cruise on Arcadia in July. My cousin and her hubby are coming with us and she phones reguarly telling me how many more days were have to go,
Hope to hear from you again sometime James, Barbara and John
