More news from Carol

Hello again everyone,

Thank you for your comments, both here and on our Facebook page.

I'd be interested to know how many of you use Facebook, and follow our page there? We have some interesting interactive elements to it, and keep it up to date with news from what's happening at here P&O Cruises. Do let me know what you think, or if there's anything you'd like to see up there.

Those of you that travel solo may have noticed that in our latest brochure we have listed four single cabins on Aurora! We are very aware that single cabins are very popular on Azura, and so we have been able to make four available on Aurora too. I have travelled in one of them, and it certainly was very comfortable. We have also been able to add some into the new specification on Oriana, when she becomes exclusively for adults in December of this year, so we hope they help those travelling solo. We will certainly also be aiming to add some on to our new ship which joins us in 2015.

Talking of our new ship, we are very excited about having another newbuild which we will, of course, be designing with our British cruise audience in mind. We will be releasing more information about her as we progress her planning and build, so I hope you will follow that with interest. She will be taking the best elements of our existing ships, and will also include some great new ideas from our passengers of today, and those of the future. I always think it's wonderful the interest there is in the name of a new ship, and this one is turning out to be no exception! I am receiving many ideas and thoughts of new names...so if you have a favourite, then do let us know!

And finally for now, I'm delighted to announce that James Cusick's blog has been shortlisted for 'Blogger of the Year' in the Cruise International Awards 2011. This is a great honour as the awards are voted for by readers - our own passengers and followers.

P&O Cruises is nominated for more awards than any other cruise line - a fantastic 16! Everything from 'Most Outstanding Ship of 2010 / 2011' to 'Cruise Celebrity of the Year' and 'Best Live Performance'. And of course, the coveted 'Cruise Line of the Year'.

So, if you love what we do then please do visit http://cruise-international.com/awards/ and take a look. Rather cheekily, I should add that of course we'd appreciate any votes you may wish to give in the sections you feel are appropriate - and thank you for that in advance!

More in a few days time....

Kind regards

Carol

Does anyone read the Community Forum from Customer Services/Admin at P&O?

Lots of interesting discussion at present about upgrading cabins and selling original cabins to others and also noisy cabins - with the solution being earplugs!!!

Anonymous said...

On which deck are the single cabins pls?

Emma Freeman said...

They don't read your comments, any more than they read letters sent direct to Carol herself from passengers on board who are desperately unhappy about something and unable to get a proper answer from staff on board. Once they've got your money, P&O don't give a monkey's about you, unless they are fishing for award votes. If anyone wishes to refute these statements, i look forward to receiving a response to the letter i sent to Carol in APRIL.

I had an accident on Ventura near the pool in August 2009 my accident report form conveniently went missing and as I did not pay to see a doctor on board ship, there is now no record of it being reported and witnessed by staff and family according to Joe Bamforth who is dealing with my complaint as Carol did not reply. P&O are only interested in taking your money and Carol is obviously not as concerned and caring about her passengers as it's made out :( E. Nylan

I feel the need to add a positive comment to this blog....
In precisely 6 months and 9 days I will be embarking on for the first time for 35n and I cannot wait!
This will be our first cruise since we married on Oriana in 2008 and I am so excited. Keep up the good work P&O we have only ever had fantastic experiences

That was supposed to read embarking on Oceana.....oops!

Xmaslisa - we're not being negative. It's actually quite a constructive comment to point out that things aren't going right all the time. If you don't tell them, they can't fix it. They won't fix it, but at least now we've told them.

Fwiw, Carol, I follow the Facebook pages much more that i visit this blog, because this blog (at least the bits i've read by nigel and carol) are DULL. It's just a history lesson about each port. There's nothing whatsoever about what life is actually like on board. If I want to know about a port, I'll read the port guide, or, if i want ACCURATE information, i'll use google! ;-) And having the port expert during a talk describe something as "recently opened" when it opened in 1962, doesn't fill me with confidence...

We have been on 3 P&O cruises (4th already booked) and have enjoyed every cruise. However one points we are finding increasingly frustrating is that We have seen a vast reduction in the variety of "accessible" itineraries for winter cruises 2012/13 (By accessible we mean for those of us who can't take more than 2 weeks off work at a time).
For example winter 2012/13 the only 14 night fly cruise to the Caribbean is on the Ventura, all other Caribbean routes are 22 nights or more. Are P&O being a little short sighted by not cultivating the cruisers of the future who are at the moment not retired? We really do like the P&O brand but are increasingly being forced to look into other cruiselines who have more choice of 2 week winter itineraries. 5 course food for thought P&O??

Firstly, thanks for taking the reins on the blog again - I think it is great that a CEO does this.

I don't facebook or twitter. I'm not exactly a trogladite but don't want technology taking over my life!

I would be really interested to hear your thoughts on mid-sized ships please Carol. A cruise aboard Azura in February has confirmed that big ships are not for us and we will stick to Oriana-sized ships in future. With the announcement of an even larger ship for P&O, I (and others I know) are starting to worry about what happens when Oriana and similar (in which I include Arcadia) reach the end of their sea-lives.

What are the single cabins on Aurora?

Lets hope when they say'' designed for the British cruisers'' its not just some John Lewis curtains... and no drawers in the cabins .. like Arcaida..
Just look at Oriana and Aurora. they consulted Canberra passageers and designed for the UK .. lets not have accountants designing the ships..
Lets get it right ... please not another ' one size fits all '' cruise ship please.

Thank goodness for more single cabins - there are a lot of us out there who cruise regularly and resent paying such huge supplements (not that it stops me going!)- I have actually managed to book a single cabin on Azura in June next year! Look forward to seeing Xmaslisa on Oceana next year - I too have booked the 35 nights to Caribbean and USA - can't wait!

Hello Carol, firstly thank you for taking the lead on this blog - very informative. Can I (with Tongue in cheek) complain that you are about to make me bankrupt - reason being that my wife, 2yr old son and I are obsessed by cruising and P&O. Ian Walters married us 4 Yrs ago last week with the commodore's daughter Rosie taking wonderful pictures of our entire wedding (funny story is that on your website my wife is pictured with the wrong name - guess my face was not suitable : ) ha ha) since then we have cruised many times and being early 30's after Ian Walter-smith (am sure this is his name) joined my wife and I last year on the Aurora for Dinner persuaded us to complete a sabbatical and do a full world cruise - which we have on Aurora in 2012, we can't wait.  We would love to see either of the Ian's again on a future cruise, so much so we have booked to join the Ventura for the grand event next July (maybe I need four jobs)
To summarise, we are hooked - Carol, you and your team and 1st class, there won't be many 3yr olds next Jan on Aurora, pls join us by the children's pool at the back of the ship ; )  thanks again. Dean

Carol,
I would like to comment on the fact that I feel standards are dropping, and I think I am not the only one to notice this.
I am sure we would rather have the prices a little, NOT TOO, higher and keep up the standard which we came to expect from P&O.
The other niggle I have is that the food in the MDR is never hot but warm, I find this such a shame in that the Chefs have worked hard to produce the food only for it to be served luke warm.

Janis ;0) great! I'm sure I'll see you on board.... I'm fairly recognisable these days lol!

Dean, you are very brave taking your children on a World Cruise!!! We have found that the majority of P&O passengers really don't like children on board (even the family ships). This last Christmas Cruise on Oriana confirmed that, beleive me!! Passengers at Sapphire Cocktail party cheered and whistled following Captain Ian Hutley's announcement that the ship would be child free by November 2011. Very, very uncomfortable experience for all those on board with children and very badly dealt with by the Captain.

Hello Andrew. Thank you for your Twitter/Facebook feedback...

Re mid size ships, I agree that not everyone likes larger or smaller ships, so there does need to be a size for everyone. Aurora, Oriana, Arcadia and Oceana are all that mid size and I know are very popular with our passengers. So these ships will be with us for a good deal longer, and so there's no need to worry about them disappearing. Re further newbuilds, well, we've plenty to work on with our newly announced ship, but as to the size of any future ships - we'll need to think about that when the time comes.

Hello Dean - well how exciting - a sabbatical and a world cruise - sounds great. I go out for a few days on our world cruises each year to see how everyone is getting on, and I have to say, I always wish I was on board for the full trip, so one day I will be doing one myself.... can't seem to persuade people here to put my desk on one of the ships so I could do it before I retire, but there we are - I'll have to wait!

By the way, I think you might be talking about Ian Wynne-Smythe along with Ian Walters.....?

So, I'm delighted that you enjoy your cruises with us, and look forward to meeting you on Aurora next year. Please do come and say hello while I'm on board.

No we definitely won't have our accountants designing our new ship - they are great people but not for this! We've already had what we called a 'Big Talk' with a group of our passengers to see what their thoughts and ideas would be for a new vessel. And we'll be doing a lot more research as we go.

Anonymous (who asked us about itineraries)

Thank you for your feedback. You raise a good point here for us to consider further. Of course we do now have Oceana cruising ex UK in the winter and she has some shorter Canary Island cruises. Adonia has her 14nt fly cruises in the Med before and over Christmas, and for 2012/13 we have some exotic fly cruise holidays starting from 13 nights. These include a variety of cruises on Azura - and they will be featured in our new Winter Holidays brochure that goes on sale on 15 July. For example, cruise ACF will take you from Dubai to Bangkok in just 13 nights. But agree we need to think further on this.
Kind regards

Carol, I've been unable to get a response from you by phone, email or letter so I wonder if you would comment here on the Portunus Club changes and how a small, but very loyal, group of your customers are being penalised.

In short, since the Portunus Club started we have cruised exclusively with P&O for 20+ days per year knowing we would qualify for gold in 2012. Now, just as we are about to qualify, the goalposts have been moved by another 50 nights and p&o won't even reward our loyalty by giving us a couple of weeks leeway (we would have qualified in May 2012). Thats bad and with Celebrity now offering their equivalent to Gold level to any P&O customers in this position, you're forcing us away from a company we love. Doesn't feel like a loyalty scheme to us.

aurorabore said...

Well, Carol you are a very brave woman opening yourself up to peoples comments on here!

I have read through the replies to this comment thread. To the gentleman taking his children on a cruise - please don't listen to Anonymous - My children grew up cruising and still cruise now - both in their 20's! It is the perfect holiday for families. Yes for those that don't want to be around children they have the likes of Adonia, Oriana from November and Arcadia - I think that should separate the pedophobics amongst us!! If you don't like children steer clear of the family ships and stop complaining if you come across any. Generally I find the children are very well catered for and you hardly see them around.

Standards have changed - some for the better (IMO) and some I'd rather they just left well alone as the were fine as they were - but we must all remember that P & O are a business and in these hard times - like us at home with our housekeeping I guess they too have to make their monthly spend add up!! Personally I've not had any problems so I find it very difficult to be negative! I've had small niggles, but nothing bad enough to a) make me write and complain and b) not cruise with P & O again.

Finally now I've had my "rant" can I just say well done to James for making to the short list for the blogger of the year. I always love it when James is at the helm of the blog I have to admit! I'm looking forward to him coming back - hopefully soon :-)

Thanks for the information as a regular single passenger iam pleased with the new additions of the single cabins. Not since the days of Canberra and the Old Oriana have we had a choice.Iam in an Azura single cabin on the 22nd July so it will be nice to compare with the fact that ive booked twins(for singles)on many prevoius cruises.I follow you all on FB and Twitter and enjoy the updates and finding out what is going on.Too show what a small crusing world it is we will be meeting up friends that we first met on Cunard Carmania(when i was 10)on Azura. Now 50 something its remarkable that people we have met during the years cruising are stll family friends.Just a quick question are there any plans for single cabins on Arcadia(my favourite just now). Thanks Carol

Good Evening,

Carol - thanks for your response and as always you are right the Purser was Ian Wynne-Smythe, he confirmed he won't be doing our World Cruise, so our paths will have to cross on another voyage. My wife is already counting down the sleeps, so when on board we'll hunt you down for a chat ; )

Anonymous - for a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend 3 1/2 months as a family will be amazing and with our little fella (3.5 yrs old when we set sail) taking up all of our time, I am sure the minority who don't prefer Children on board won't bother us - life is for living in our book ; )

Elaine - thanks for the support, I do quietly agree with your comments, but will aim not to provoke anyone. with all that's on offer plus the excitement from all of us especially my Son - we'll be in our own little bubble ; )

XmasLisa - there were 13 of us on board for the wedding - amazing is one word for the whole thing - perfect being another, my wife is on the website looking down on the wedding at sea slides (did I mention that it was a solo pic I.e not ME - not bitter, ha ha) however I do have a slight claim to fame and am pictured on the on board wedding pictures price list.

Carol - I completed my votes today so good luck for the results, I am sure we all have our fingers crossed.

Happy Cruising Everyone.

I have already spoken to the loyalty dept three times and had two letters from them where, although they agree its "unfair", they confirmed they are not allowed to move an inch from the new Peninsular Club rules.

With respect, is it really worth me contacting them again for the same answer?
It really needs someone like yourself to look at this and realise that there's an anomoly here that is penalising some of your most loyal customers. Not leaving us feeling conned. P&O are better than that.

Can I ask that, if I do write in again, you or someone very senior who can exercise some real judgement, will consider this position rather than just issue a standard reply?

Hi Carol,

I have to echo the comments made by ilovepando regarding inflexibility of the loyalty scheme in it's new guise.

In a similar vein to the issues being faced by those who are almost at Gold tier but now have to cruise for a further 50 nights to achieve Caribbean tier under the new scheme there is also another group who are being discriminated against with the new changes. Ruby tier members who have not completed 15 nights by the end of March 2012 will not only have to add nights to achieve the equivalent level of the new scheme but they will also lose the benefits they are currently entitled to receive.

As with ilovepando, I have been in correspondence with the loyalty team and they insist that NO current Portunus Club members will LOSE benefits but then refuse to agree to transfer Ruby tier members with less than 15 nights cruising to the equivalent tier in the new scheme (Atlantic tier). In fact, I was told my parents should simply book another cruise before April 2012 so they can be transferred to Atlantic tier by having achieved enough nights by the crossover date.

As it will work, and with the insistence that no goodwill points can be added to accounts to allow passengers to maintain their current level of benefits, my parents will have completed 4 weeks of cruising before being able to take advantage of the loyalty scheme benefits that they would be entitled to at present. As that is only 5% discount on applicable onboard spending and the loyalty magazine the comment I was also given - that it's not fair to continue to reward someone with less than 15 nights cruising and who may not cruise again with benefits of the loyalty club, apart from the magazine the benefits are only achievable on a cruise so there's little cost to P&O of allowing these Ruby members to continue to benefit from things that they would get at the moment if they were on a cruise before April 2012.

I would be interested in your comments about this matter as it does seem a little unfair to those people who have only just found your company.

Loyalty/Portunus
Reading the points that have been made regarding the allocation of points etc in the new stucture. There have been some very interesting points made about the new system being unfair to passengers just not making the new tiers. However where do you draw the line.
I had taken over 15 cruises with P&O before the POSH/Portunus system came into being.Unfortunalely i was at the stage of building a new career and was unable to take a cruise for a while.Did i complain about the fact that all my previous cruises were not taken into account,no,its just sods law. There has to be some kind of stucture to the system and iam sure that many passnegers will have some kind of grievance however, how if you bend the rules for some there would be anarchy.Whilst sympathising with the points made it would be just too much of a "can of worms"to bend the rules for some.If this is done then ill certainly be at the front of the clue to have some retrospect points being added,as Fiona said above her parents will have no benefit for their 4 weeks of cruising, big deal what about my 60 odd days that were never taken into consideration.

ilovepando said...

Valid points Alan but the big difference is you "were unable to take a cruise for a while". The group of people I am talking about have 20+ days of cruising with P&O EVERY year that the portunus club was in operation and, until now, intended to do so EVERY year for decades to come.

Yes of course the line has to be drawn somewhere but there also has to be some small flexibility offered to people who miss Gold by a few points, or have to cruise a couple of weeks after the April 2012 deadline, especially when such people's cruising record clearly demonstrates they have been extremely, and exclusively, loyal to P&O partly because of the gold membership benefits the portunus club promised them.

Until the recent peninsular announcements, the loyalty dept were happy to "lend" impending gold qualifiers a few points/nights to enable gold qualification. The same people are now embarressed that they are being prevented from offering even 1 point.

Fiona R said...

Alan,

My main point/comment/bone of contention is that P&O Loyalty team claim that no current Portunus Club member will lose the benefits to which they are currently entitled. People in my parents situation are being told that they will not even be members of the new scheme let alone retain their current membership benefits.

4 weeks may not be much to yourself but, to a couple in their 70's & 80's, it is a long time to wait to get what they would be entitled to if they were going on another cruise now rather than in 2012.

Fiona R

ilovepando said...

All it needs is for P&O to have a couple of small proviso's to avoid the situation.

For example, if you are within x days or x% of a qualification level at April 2012 AND you have cruised with them every calender year, then you can have x numbers of 'bonus' points as a one off.

This rewards those loyal enough to cruise every year but who will currently miss qualification by a tiny margin AND are then required to cruise another 50 nights just to get back to the same point they are practically at now.

It still leaves a clear line in the sand, but sweeps up sensibly the groups that are being penalised unfairly by the moving goalposts because "we have to set the line somewhere".

What do you think Carol, is this something your team could take a look at?

Hi Carol. Interesting discussions as always. Last October I fell for the old 'pay in full up front for best ever prices' malarkey for self and 12 yr old sun on A119. How does this work (it doesn't, in our case, at that price!)

I am confused by the top tier of the new Peninsular Club (Ligurian), which seems to be only available to cruisers who have short-term loyalty(if any) to P&O. For instance if someone had been on two world cruises in the last three years and another shorter cruise before that, then they get in as they will have 2500 points and 201+ days with P&O in the last three years. Whereas someone like me who has long-term loyalty to P&O (since before the Portunus club started) and regularly cruises on average for 5 weeks a year with them has no chance of getting into this tier even though I will have over 4000 points, but only say 105+ days in the last three years when the new system starts. This gives me no incentive to try and attain this to tier, rather it encourages me to try out other cruise lines which may take me away from P&O permanently. Surely this is not the intention, and I am sure that there are a lot of people in this situation? On reading the information about the second (Baltic) tier, the extra benefits over those in the Caribbean tier are very minimal compared with the extra benefits in the Ligurian tier.
Perhaps P&O could give an allowance to people such as me, say 25 days in lieu of every 500 points above the 2500 threshold - this would enable people to strive to enter the Ligurian tier?

Carol Marlow said...

Thanks to those of you who asked about the Peninsular Club.
If it is the fact that you will be just below the amount of points needed to go up a tier in 2012, then I am sorry but it is the case that we can’t adjust the points, or it would be seen as unfair by others. The cut offs are always difficult if you are just underneath the level, but then we have to cut off somewhere. The reason that we gave a year’s notice of the club changes was so that passengers could accrue more points if they wished during this year, to try and position themselves where they wanted to be within the new tiers of the Peninsular Club. We have tried to be very inclusive by making sure that all those moving into Gold Tier during this year with 1501+ points would be automatically placed in the Caribbean tier for the new club, even though the new tier level for that after April 2012 will be 2001+ points.
Thank you once again for all the comments.

Hi Carol, thank you very much for your reply. There is just one more point I would like to make on closing if I may.

I, like many P&O regulars always follow P&O's own recommendation to book early and so our cruises are always booked (and finances planned, days off work booked etc) on the first day each new brochure goes on sale. So, we haven't really had a years notice because we had already planned/booked all our cruises from the 2011/2012 brochure and, although we booked early from the 2012/13 brochure too, the changes are already effective for that brochure. That is why, even by opting for an 'early' cruise in May 2012, we'll still miss the gold deadline by days.

We feel some small flexibility/judgement needs to be exercised here to avoid it unfairly impacting on the customers who have been amongst the most loyal you have had for the last 7/8 year period. We've cruised exclusively with P&O multiple times every year during that period but currently its Celebrity who seem to realise P&O's mistake here not P&O themselves.

I am truly sorry to land all this on you when you just planned to blog for a few days but I strongly believe this is wrong and others are saying as much, and much less constructively than me, elsewhere.

A question for Carol Marlow with regard to pricing and discounts.

Carol

Following on from Aitch quesion on the 2nd July I also fell for the pay in full up front for the best prices on a cruise in August on oriana with my siste in law family to find that in May & June P&O have slashed their prices in their Summer sale which has left us well out of pocket.

When this was queried both directly and through our travel agents Thomas Cook we were given the usal brush off and that nothing could be done. No mention of upgrades or increased on board spend. This does not lend itself to customer loyalty or indeed booking in advance if P&O are now going to discount prices to fill ships.

Indeed back in 2003 P&O stated that they would offer upgrades to existing customers and then sell off the lower price cabins in order to stop this sort of thing occuring again. However now seem to have changed their policy.

I would welcome a response and have given my email address below.

Kind Regards

Thanks for taking the time to speak to your customers. I sent a complaint to your staff at the end of May, having returned from a 16 day cruise. To date, I've still had no reply. I would like to send the original email to your office so you can look into why I have had such a poor experience of reporting a poor experience.

You can email me at stumack71@sky.com

Thanks
