What a great honour for me to welcome the most famous blogger in the Cruise ship world to this blog! John Heald is Senior Cruise Director for Carnival in the US, although he is proud to be British himself.
John kindly asked me to write an article for his blog some time back. John and his family have just come off the two day party cruise - which our blog fan Elaine (auroabore) was also on!
Here is John's report on his cruise...................................
Heidi, Kye and I got to experience why P&O Cruises is Great Britain’s favourite cruise line when we sailed on Ventura for 2 days. And………….here she is.
This was a 2-day cruise and the demographics were truly representative of every generation. Believe it or not there are still British people who think that cruising is just for people of 70-plus and their parents. One of the stereotypes that go along with this misconception is the image of the nearly dead playing shuffleboard on deck before they have a cup of cocoa and take their afternoon nap.
That image is slowly being eradicated and shuffleboard has been replaced with activities in the form of the Circus School located on the top open deck at the aft part of the vessel. This involves a circus trampoline set where passengers are strapped to a harness and with views of the Med or the Caribbean bounce, somersault and generally have fun.
The ship is simply stunning and has a wonderful “at home” feeling about it. The decor is that of something that would not look out of place on the front cover of Country Living or Homes & Garden with just the right amount of traditional P&O Cruises traits with the latest groundbreaking technology.
The lobby reminded me of a 5-star boutique hotel oozing with comfortable sofas and chairs which are highlighted by sleek mood lighting. It was therefore no surprise that many passengers used this as a place to relax and read as they sank into the over sized sofas and enjoyed a cocktail or a crapafrapacino and scone and cream from the coffee bar.
Ventura has been designed to maximise the public space to the full. I know I keep banging on about comfortable seats but it is a pet hate of mine. You can have the most up to date lounge brimming with plasma screens and gadgets galore but if the chairs are as uncomfortable as using sandpaper instead of toilet paper…..what’s the point..…Ventura’s lounges are some of the very best I have seen on any ship. Take Ramblas…..designed around the famous cosmopolitan centre of Barcelona, complete with tapas, paella and huge jugs of Sangria.
There is a British pub, the gorgeous Metropolis Bar which has the most perfect views of the sea and so many public spaces and lounges that I have to say, 2 days was not enough time to explore them all. Smoking is not permitted inside any areas of the ship including passenger staterooms. Smoking is, however, allowed on stateroom balconies and on certain areas of the open deck.
Us Brits love to eat as my beach ball stomach shows and the food on Ventura is both varied and brilliant. There are 11 restaurants in all, including four reserved for family dining, and the service was superb. There are early and late dining options as well as freedom dining. The first night Heidi, Kye and I ate in the dining room and being adventurous I had the roast beef and Yorkshire Pudding.
Now I am not just saying this but honestly, next to my Mum’s, this was as good as I have ever eaten. Yorkshire Pudding is supposed to be big and fluffy but many restaurants make it as flat as Kate Moss’ chest. P&O Cruises makes a brilliant Yorkshire Pudding and the traditional pass around service made it extra special.
Heidi had the salmon which she said was excellent but reserved her highest praise for the sticky toffee pudding which she described as………. mmmmmmmmmmm …………and with a glint in her eye asked Ronald the waiter from Goa for some more. He obliged bringing her an even bigger portion...
The second night we ate at the Pan Asian restaurant called East. There is a small surcharge for this as in most cruise ship speciality restaurants and for me, the meal here was simply divine. East serves a wonderful mix of spicy food from India, Thailand and beyond in the most relaxing and inviting environment.
The ship is bristling with activities and I have to say that probably one of the most impressive areas were those designed for the kids and teens. These are broken up in the usual age brackets with special rooms reserved for the youngest to the teens. However, there were two areas where I came away thinking……this is just brilliant. Along with the regular dining rooms and East there are two more dining areas. The first has a menu designed by one of the UK’s most famous celebrity chefs, Marco Pierre White, whose reputation as one of the most adventurous chefs in the world has made his restaurants the place to be and to be seen. The same can be said for his restaurant on Ventura which again has a small surcharge…….but it’s the price of an appetiser in land based eateries and the food is spectacular.
Chef White has also gone into partnership with the famous jockey (that’s horses not music) Frankie Dettori and they have a brilliant pizzeria and ice cream parlour on one of the open decks..….no charge here except to the tailor who you will have to pay to loosen your trousers.
British people still holiday as a family, it remains a strong tradition here which is why P&O Cruises truly are Britain’s favourite cruise line and kids…….well they are in holiday heaven. First of all there is a huge open deck space……just for teens. This included a life size chess set and other games as well as music and most importantly a place just to “hang” with other people away from Mum and Dad and hopefully to experience that first kiss.
However, the scene stealer was a room where parents can leave children aged 6 months and up while Mum and Dad enjoy a romantic dinner free from crying and being puked on. The room the highly trained staff do this in was just beautiful especially the little beds with the child’s name written above them….…..this was the first time I had heard of a cruise line accepting babies and I know for many parents this is one of the deciding factors when they book. Other lines could and should learn from this.
One thing is for sure…….on Ventura…..the kids are in a safe paradise all of their own and the facilities are quite simply………right up there with the best I have ever seen.
While the kids are having fun Mum and Dad are enjoying world-class shows and entertainment with three different shows a night at three different performance times. This is very clever scheduling and means that passengers always have multiple choices on what they want to see. Shows include lavish productions, comedians and on the second night of our cruise The Four Tops performed. Now I don’t know if they were the original Four Tops but who cares, they were brilliant and the Brits loved them.
Time is running out on this blog thingy and there is so much I still need to mention from the amazing spa complete with all the usual suspects plus new treatments designed to pamper you and relax you like never before. There is the beautiful art gallery…..no auctions on this ship ….…. just a very cool and relaxing way to walk among works of art and if you see one you like …………..you buy it. …………………very impressive.
Something else that impressed me was that the captain during his welcome aboard announcement described the voyage as “a party cruise.” This surprised me because the word party, quite incorrectly, has been associated with bad people doing bad things. But P&O Cruises were not afraid to call it that and there was nobody doing naughty things to each other on the middle of Lido deck and no outrageous behaviour.
There were people just………..well………..ummm….. partying or to put it another way, celebrating …………and yes…………….dare I say it…………….they were having fun. Look, I know that I have no right to call myself a travel writer just as Charlie Sheen has no right to entertain at a children’s party. However, I do know ships a bit and what works and P&O Cruises use of the words “party cruise” on this particular voyage described it perfectly. Oh and one more thing here. The last night of the cruise was formal dress code………on a 2-day cruise. When the girls and I left the cabin that night I thought that very few would be dressed formally but boy was I wrong. Not only was every ……. yes every passenger dressed formally but they were dressed formally properly. There were more tuxedos than I have seen in many years and the ladies all had beautiful dresses on. There were no free drinks to entice them to do this. Nope, the programme said “formal dress” and that’s exactly what happened……..everyone dressed formally. Now you know me, I am not a big fan of dress codes but here, on Ventura, it made sense and the ship looked even more splendid for them doing so.
Here are a few random photos as taken by my Mrs.
I know that most of my North American friends won’t get to sail on a P&O Cruises holiday so the final message then goes to my British blog readers. Life is simply too short to put up with traffic jams and cr*p hotels. You work hard. You only get one summer holiday a year. So go on, get your bottom on a P&O Cruises holiday……..because life is simply too short. Go on, book now, you deserve it and if for no other reason…………to try the best Yorkshire Pudding this side of my Mum’s kitchen.
Goodnight.
Your friend,
John

Many thanks to John for your blog on our great ship Ventura. If you want to read more of John's adventures, you can find him on http://www.johnhealdsblog.com/.
Well I best get myself busy again on the blog as I need to write up San Francisco and Acapulco. As I type we have just sailed out of the delightful Mexican port of Huatulco. The weather is perfect and everyone is back in 'holiday mode' after the cold days surrounding San Francisco. Thank you for all your Birthday Wishes - it was a most memorable day and one I will look back on for a long time to come!
Best wishes meantime.
James.
Don't wait for people to be friendly - show them how it's done!

Hi James
Wow a good blog read indeed, John does not mince words. The only thing that stops us cruising more is the distance to get on a P&O cruise ship also money does factor into aswell.
He has not tried my Yorkshire pudding the family love them, especially with a roast, but also for dessert aswell with Golden Syrup drizzled over them, hot or cold they love them, also topped off with Vanilla ice cream.
Glad you had a great birthday for both of you and Elaine.
Looking forward to more adventures from Aurora.
Regards to all on board

Part 1 (too many characters) !!
Well where do I start?? I have been celebrating my 50th birthday for days now! Started last Thursday when I headed to Southampton for the party weekend. Ventura is a lovely ship - no denying that - and each time I go on her it grows on me more and more. Yes it was a party cruise - lots of large parties - a group of ladies celebrating a 50th birthday (not mine - mine was a more subdued affair) - hen parties galore and i'm sure some stag parties too! Certainly had a group of lads in the vicinity of our cabin who were there for lots of fun!! They were very noisy in the early hours of the morning and then the following day one of them was out in the corridor in his birthday suit! Boys will be boys!
On the Sunday I'd arranged to go home via Bicester village where I met up with my sister in law and niece (who cruise frequently too). Got home and DS was cooking Sunday dinner for my family (Mum, Dad and brother and his family). Now John - my son knows how to do those big fluffy yorkshire puds! His were just perfect - Mine are usually like Kate Moss's chest - Lol ;-0)
Monday evening Tom, myself and the kids went to Luton Hoo for dinner - it's a bit of trek from where we live in Beds, but it was worth it. We had a lovely evening and left the car there, choosing to get a taxi home. It made a change to have all 4 of us together. DS works in a restaurant as front of house manager, so he very rarely gets time off to go out to dinner with us. Thankfully his day off is a Monday and Tuesday morning (except this week he had taken the Tuesday evening off too as I'd got Tom tickets for the England match last night and as I hate football, I suggested DS went with him. I guess this is where DS came up with the idea of taking me to the Gordon Ramsey restaurant at Claridges for lunch. Well it was what I expected and more. Tom then met up with us and we went to a champagne bar for the last of the celebrations! Today it's life back to normal! Oh except I'm meeting a friend for lunch today ;-0)
Mr Heald, I'm glad you enjoyed the British experience. P & O ticks all the boxes for me and that is why I stick with them. Everytime I step back onboard and see familiar faces I always feel like I'm coming home! All be it my holiday home! DD and I were also in East on the Saturday night. Couldn't fault our food at all. Chose the ginger jelly for dessert, but it was too gingery for me, but I enjoyed the fruit that came with it! And it finished off the meal perfectly. Saw one of our favourite wine stewardesses in East too - She was busy busy busy, but I went over and said hello. We ate in MPW the night before. MPW was onboard this cruise. He came into the White room whilst we were in there and then the following evening he came into East. Although in his dinner suit with his chef whites and shoes on underneath - Lol. I also spotted the guy that does anything to do with travel (from BA strikes to company's going bust) on the BBC - can't remember his name. I'm sure he works for a newspaper! His face is very familiar and I can even hear his voice as I sit here!
Went to the Four Tops (I'm sure they described themselves as the Tops - one of them was British and they all looked quite young - Now whether one of the them was an original I don't know. I remember them in the 60's when I was growing up - I'm now 50, so assume they were maybe 20 in the sixties - that would make them about 70 now). BUT they were excellent. My kind of music and I loved the whole evening. It was only standing room in the theatre and that was the second show, so late sitting show was still to come.
Part 2:-
James, I'm glad you had a lovely day for your birthday. I'm going to remember my birthday for a long time too - turning 50 hasn't been quite as bad as I thought it was going to be - and all the celebrations and activities of the past few days has kind of taken my mind off the fact that I'm now the big 50! 2 weeks tomorrow and you will be back in the UK - bet you can't wait :-) I'm hoping I get to see you before you go off on leave. 2 weeks today I'll be getting ready to load up the car and head for Southampton - Yeah :-)
Geoff, I have to say as nice as your yorkshire puddings sound - I can't imagine it really. Although I guess a yorkshire is just pancake mix in the first place!!!
Right better get on - meeting my friend at 12.30.
James are you coming back through the panama canal? If so what day - I like to watch!
Best wishes to everyone

Aurora has been my favourite for years and is still my favourite. I can't wait to get back onboard :-)

Wow, were we on the same cruise? I thought P&O were moving away from the Party Cruise image, and seeing the weekenders as more of a taster cruise.
Each to their own and we all enjoy ourselves in different ways, as we have a right too. However, I regard groups of people partying in the stateroom corridors, and balconys up until 3.30 am outrageous. the next morning finding our balcony littered with cigarette ends discarded from above and empty beer bottles and crumpled cans running along the handrail is something I have never experienced on any of the 14 cruises I have taken before. My experience wasn't isolated read any cruise forum there are plenty of similar experiences.
Of course I am not saying your review is wrong as it is what you experienced and you were a lot luckier than me  I just think it would be a shame for someone to decide to try P&O for the first time because of your review and base their views of the company on what can and does go on on these short cruises.
You obviously eat in places a lot fancier than me, if the cover charge is similar to an appetizer, it was £30 a person on this short break!
I love P&O have 3 future cruises already booked, but my experience last weekend was nothing like I have come to expect, we went with 3 couples who have never sailed with P&O before and never will again :(
Amanda
Hi Amanda
I hope the one experience has not put your friends off, as it was a party cruise, and believe me P&O is the best i am sure if they were to do a cruise of a longer duration they would really enjoy themselves, with out the NAF antics of a few party revellers.

Are you talking about my posts or are you talking about John Healds post?
I can't say I was very happy being woken in the early hours, by these lads. I have done several weekenders before and I've never had an experience like this one. I have posted on the forum and if I see James I'll have a chat with him about my experience in private with him. I'm not going to say any more than that on here! It's not the time nor the place. But if he asks me I'll tell him as it was warts and all ;-0)
Weekenders IMO (as a seasoned cruiser presumably like yourself) are not the ideal way to get a sense of a proper 14 + night cruise. I have seen big parties of passengers on the Xmas cruises, but have never been bothered by them. I have never really had cause to complain about any of the longer cruises I have been on with P & O. Had I been on the weekender for a taste of cruising it may well have put me off. As I wasn't on for that reason it hasn't and I hope it doesn't stop others either. Ventura too - although a lovely ship - IMO is more suited to young families. As my kids are now grown up, I don't have to worry about their needs as well as mine, so I tend to stick to 3 ships, although if an itinerary is on one I'd like to do then I go for it despite the ship. I always look at Aurora itineraries first, closely followed by Arcadia and Oriana - Arcadia being adult only and Oriana becoming adult only by the end of the year. Last year I had a late offer come through from my agent for Ventura (7 nights in Sept last year). It suited both our budget and also the holiday time OH had left. It was a welcome break. But not my first choice normally. It was a case of right time, right place and right price!
I urge you to get your friends to try one of the older ships. I was on Aurora's weekender back in Nov last year and I didn't have the same experience as this weekend. I don't think there were as many stag and hen parties, but there were some. If they want another tester, I suggest you get them to try the 7 night cruises. You don't tend to get the party crowd on them and IMO I think 7 days is a good length of time for a taster.
Personally I like P & O and their product. It suits me. I have looked around Independence of the seas and it's not for me! I have been on QE2 and QM2 - I loved QE2, but our experience on QM2 wasn't as good an experience as what I was expecting and for the same cruise as P & O we probably paid more than 1/2 again! I actually wished I was on Oriana when we were in port together!
I can understand why they put the price of the alternative dining up on weekenders. If you have it at a lower price then you potentially have too much demand to availability. Presumably people look at the high price and rule it out straight away. DD and I were booked on freedom dining, but decided we'd eat in the White Room and East anyway. Asked to have our freedom dining charge removed as we were not eating in the restaurant and we spent a fair bit in the alternatives, but despite going to reception and asking to have it removed it was still there when the final invoice came through and it was too late to do anything about it! I was not happy! It's only £3.20pp for the weekend, but that's not the point. I have to say we did enjoy both our alternative dining experiences.
Just out of curiousity - what deck were you on? We were on Lido deck forward.
Elaine (aurorabore)
Amanda, Elaine is definetely right it would be good idea to suggest to your friends trying Arcadia, Aurora or Oriana
Thank you everyone for your kind words. Sorry Elaine, I was commenting on John Healds review, I think we must have been typing at the same time.
To be honest I had read plenty of weekender reviews and hadn't gone with as much of an open mind as I should have. Although I was trying to be positive, thinking as we usually cruise as a couple, and this time we would be with friends that the other groups would not be such a problem. It was the lack of sleep that was caused, and the safety issue of the cigarettes that upset me most. We were on C deck.
We started cruising with Princess, and are back on the Grand in May. Have also tried Celebrity with one of the 4 night cruises on Eclipse last year and thought it was fabulous.
I have had good and bad P&O experiences, and a bad one won't put me off.
My friends are RCI cruisers, a line that has not appealed to me, I just found it very tiresome having to say Its not usually like this all the time.
The main reason for posting the comment was James has a very well respected blog, and he included a review that was all glowing and seemed to me to be slightly misleading and I couldn't recognise it as the cruise I was on. I have more respect for a review that has pros and cons.
That said, it has been lovely to air my views and receive encouraging friendly advice, and I thank those that replied to me.
Hopefully my next cruises will be full of more passengers like you.

The cigarette thing is a big issue - It is so not necessary! I wonder if the folks that were doing it have seen the results of the fire on the princess ship and wonder what the consequences would have been! It doesn't bear thinking about. So irresponsible and careless. I'm not a smoker and find it disgusting that people do that - I live in the country here, miles from any take aways etc, but it's amazing how many McDonalds bags I see heading up to the village or discarded bottles - so not necessary. I always taught my kids to find a bin and put it in!!

Hi James, Barbara from Taunton once more. I see you had a stop in Huatulco, any banana boat rides?
You must be well on the way to Panama now you lucky people. Looking forward to your blogs from Acapulco and San Francisco.
Glad you had a happy birthday. Hope all on Aurora and crew are well.
Happy Sailing
Barbara
HI Elaine
Aurora goes thru the Panama Canal today 1.4.11 so keep watching the web cam, and enjoy.

Hi James,
Good to get to read John's blog about his experiences onboard Ventura. I read his own blog from time to time - and especially through the problems he experienced because of the fire onboard his ship.
I think people behave the same way on some of these 2/3 night cruises like they do on a weekend to Brighton or Blackpool where the idea is as much fun as possible and too bad if it disturbs others! I am glad all passengers andthe ship survived the partying :-)
James, watched the ship going through the Panama Canal yesterday. That's one cruise which is on my to do list! Can't wait for the next blog installment.
Take care, now off to wait to find out if I'm booked on my choice of cruises for next year,
Fiona R
Thanks John and James
Interesting to read that John is not a fan of dress codes.Hardly suprising coming from the American Cruise Market, ive seen wounds better dressed than 99.9% of Americans.

Hi Geoff,
Thank you for your BD wishes.
All well here. Regards to all in WA.
James.
Hi Matt,
Go ahead and get the Baltic booked - always a super cruise that one.
Best wishes,

Hi Elaine,
Thank you for all your messages - you are a travel writer in your own right! Great advice for everyone from you - I know you like the best of everything and you love Aurora!
Many happy returns of you and belated Happy BIrthday Wishes to you - sound like you had a fab time all round - see how much you are loved and adored by your family and friends.
Yours,
James.
Hi Amanda,
Thanks for all your messages. I have been on many party cruises - and you can't please everyone - some people just want to party for 24/7 and others want a restful time. These party cruises are very busy for us as we lavish the best of everything on us in a short space of time. Having said this most passengers have a really great time - I think holidays and cruises are a very personal taste - one size does not fit all - this is why it is great that P&O Cruises have such a variety of ships to take your pick from.
All the best,
James.
Hi Geoff,
Thanks for keeping everyone posted with the latest information - you are a real blog pal! Say hi to Graham W when you next speak!
James.
Hi Fiona,
Plan it, book it, do it!
Best wishes,

James.
Barbara,
Bananas, jet skis, you name it - it was all going on!
