Honolulu - Hawaii.

Hello Again from Aurora!

On Saturday 19 March 2011 Aurora was berthed alongside the Aloha Tower in Honolulu. This is always a great port of call as there is so much to see and do. Once we were alongside Prakash and I escorted the Officials up to Vanderbilt's and Carmens and we got the face to face United States Immigration Inspection underway. There are always a lot of formalities to complete when entering an American Port for the first point of entry.

Safety Officer Andrew and Security Officer Eric see that all is well from the Bridge!

We also had US Coastguard Officers on board inspecting our ship and at 1000 hours we did a full crew General Emergency Stations Drill and we passed with flying colours! United States Port Health Inspectors did not show up so we can expect to see them in San Francisco.

Many of you will recognise the Cruise Ship Terminal with all the murals from the 1930s.......
Once all the morning business was over Amanda and I popped ashore in the afternoon for a walk, shopping at the mall and then over to Drakes at Waikiki Beach for a bite of Dinner! All the things you can do in a day!
As our fuel barge needed more time we knew that Aurora would be sailing at 8.00pm and not 6.00pm so this just added to the call. The weather was perfect with a little breeze and not too hot.

In the past I have been to visit Pearl Harbour and explore the exhibits at the World War II Pacific National Monument Centre - this is very moving - remembering the Pearl Harbour attack of 1941. There are so many things you can do, like taking a helicopter flight, a Coastal Explorer excursion like Graham did, visit the Atlantis Submarine etc. For me it was a great opportunity to just stretch the legs and flex the credit card!! If not why not!

Here is Grahams Report on the day..................

Mark Twain declared Hawaii to be 'the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean', and not even many years of mass tourism have proved him wrong. These islands are some of the most beautiful and isolated in the world - 2,500 miles to the nearest land mass, which is North America of course.

We were berthed alongside at the terminal building adjacent to the Aloha Tower Marketplace with its shops and restaurants inside it. This area is always popular for our passengers.

It was once Honolulu’s tallest building but it’s now dwarfed by gleaming skyscrapers that have now become commonplace here. I decided to accompany the Hawaiian Coastal Explorer tour that allowed us to get up close with nature and is the only tour that us to take the passengers down into the famous Diamond Head volcanic crater.

Diamond Head Crater is on the South-east Coast of O'ahu at the end of the Waikiki area overlooking the Pacific Ocean and has been extinct for 150,000 years.  The current name came was given to the crater by British sailors in the 1800s when they first saw the crater at a distance, the calcite crystals in the lava rock appeared to glimmer in the sunlight and the sailors mistakenly thought there must be diamonds in the soil.
The tour actually allows us you to drive down into the crater itself which is now a nature reserve and is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for extended hikes. To enable us to do this we needed to drive through the tunnel that was blasted through during WWII to enable the US troops stationed there easy access.

The coastline around this eastern point of the island is spectacular and has lots of great photo opportunities, in particular the stop we made at the Hanauma Bay area. Our elevated view was to say the least beautiful and some said spectacular.

The water was perfectly clear and one could clearly see the coral beds just under the water's surface.

One aspect of the coast here that some will recall was the bay where the Hollywood film makers shot scenes from ‘From Here to Eternity’.

We moved on to see the power of the ocean at the famous Halona Point Blow Hole. The rage of the sea was evident as it crashed over the rocks but we did not see the water bursting from the volcanic tube as we had hoped.

To the left of our view was yet another beautiful beach area, this time it was called Sandy Bay, quite innocuous really, but that was just what it was, a truly sandy beach.

Further around the coast we stopped to see the bay at Makadu’u. Here we hoped to see some turtles in the sea, but unfortunately we were disappointed. However, we could still enjoy views of the beach area that was all but deserted apart from the passengers I was with. They enjoyed walking the soft white sand and paddling in the warm azure sea. Many remarked how much they were enjoying seeing so much of this small section of the eastern coastline, an area they had not seen or even knew existed before. I guess they thought that Hawaii was all about Waikiki.  Next we headed for a very different area to see some of the special endemic plants and trees of the island. This is a facet that the government here are trying to strengthen as so much of the vegetation was brought into the island by settlers over the hundreds of years of development. The guide enthusiastically showed us just a few of these before moving onto to see the remains of an Hawaiian war temple.

Finally we motored on to see the extensive views from the windswept Pali lookout. It always blows fiercely here and we had to brace ourselves carefully against the protective rails to take our photographs. This is definitely not the place to go having just paid for a new hairstyle. All the times that I have been here I have never known it an any different, always windy and always shrouded a little in mist. So before we realised we were back in downtown Honolulu and once again enjoying the comforts of our home on the sea, Aurora. Happy memories once again of Hawaii, I am sure its friendly shores will beckon us back again very soon.

Many thanks for your report Graham.........

Off to the Mall now!

What a great place to wander around and sell everything from Macy's to Mont Blanc!

We enjoyed a cup of tea and a fresh strawberry Swiss roll to keep our energy levels up.

 In the bag!

Amanda in retail therapy................

Some amazing interiors in the shops.......................

Time for dinner on the beach!

A great setting with a live band playing - what more could you ask for?

Great service............

Do we have to leave?!

People were dancing to the live music...........

Life's a beach.....................am I really here - you know one of those moments............

Lots of Hotels along Waikiki Beach - I could holiday here................!

Impressive entrance to the Hotels......................................

Trolley Trams......................

More shopping behind Waikiki Beach.......

A cooling off dip..................

A sun downer - and a dip -  as the day dictates............................

Birthday greetings and congratulations to Michael Maddox on your 21st Birthday on 23 March with love & Best wishes from Nan and Grandad on board Aurora approaching San Francisco.

Mel and Rita Armstrong send best wishes to Son Wayne, Daughter-in-law Sally and Grandson Matthew - thinking of you all!

Passengers and Ship's Company all enjoyed their day in Honolulu - wish we were staying for longer was the mantra of the day! Perhaps I will come back here one day for a holiday..........that's a lovely thought! It was a very busy resort - no sign of a slow down here. Once back on board it was an update with the team and all was well. Soon it was time to go to the Bridge to sign off for departure - next port of call San Francisco.

After leaving the Bridge I went to meet some friends at the Pennant on Deck 12 aft and we gazed over the rail as Aurora left harbour - and what a sail out with the lights of Honolulu twinkling in the background and a full moon to light up the sky for us. A perfect ending to a perfect day.

Bye for now,
James.

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

Hi James

WOW is all i can say what a report Graham and you put together, reading it i was green with envy, you surely have the best job in the world. NO traffic jams for you on on the way to work, just perhaps a stairway or two.

The weather here at 0745 is misty/foggy this morning, not good driving weather at all.

Looking forward to more reports with envy.

Regards to all on Aurora

G'Day Geoff,

You are fast of the mark as they say! Always good to hear from you.
On Aurora it must take all of 6 seconds for me to get from my office to my cabin! There are never any traffic jams or lights stuck on red! I have one of the best jobs in the world.

Hope your weather improves - great roads for driving in Perth and WA - hope to return soon and visit Margaret River for another time!!!

Enjoy your day,
James.

It is now Tuesday 22.03.2011 on board and we will be in San Francisco on Thursday 24.03. when I hope to take a walk to Fisherman's Wharf and catch a Tram Trolley over Nob Hill to Union Square!

I left my heart in San Fancisco once.........!

Hi James,

Another wonderful set of photos and blog from yourself and Graham!

Glad to hear you had a wonderful time in Hawaii its a beautiful place that is on our tv's a lot at the moment as they have been showing a remake of the classic programme Hawaii 5-0!

Also glad to hear you passed with 100% I know how important it is for you all.

Am sat here with the lounge bathed in bright early morning sunshine with the prospect of temperatures in higher mid teens! Not warm enough to sit out on the balcony though as the sun will be over the other side of the flats by lunchtime!

Have a lovely day at sea today and I hope the weather has cleared for your arrival on Thursday!

Sorry guys, just catching up with the blog - James, Natalie and I have not stopped and tomorrow we are off down to Southampton, Nat's popping into the office and then on Friday were off on Ventura's weekender :-) I can't believe just how busy we've been and how quickly the time is going. We don't seem to have a free day - come 14th April I will be glad to get away on my Caribbean cruise - Lol

Well I have read about the problems at Christmas Island on the forum - presumably you've read it too James? Such a shame, but these things happen. It's a shame not everyone has the same attitude as me. I guess if it's somewhere you really wanted to see then it is disappointing. I have to say looking at the blog photos - it looks like one of those places I'd rather have spent the day having a massage onboard or something! In fact I did this with one of our ports of call at Xmas. Dispatched the guys off to golf and then headed for the spa to see what port day specials they had running!

Right I'm off to read the Honolulu blog! Then off to the gym ;-0)

Hi Geoff

I've seen your message on the Samoa blog - And thank you very much.

Yes it's a Hawaii birthday for me this year (after Hawaii 50)!!!!!!! I reckon we should have a grass skirt party - Lol

It's my actual birthday on Monday - But tomorrow we are heading to Southampton for a weekend cruise on Ventura (that's DD and I) - Sunday evening I have my parents and brother and his family coming for dinner. Then on Monday I am going to a place called Luton Hoo for dinner in the evening. And apparently my son is taking me to Claridges in London for lunch on Tuesday - So a busy few days ahead of me :-)

Thanks once again for your wishes

Tendered the last two messages over from the Christmas Island blog, just in case you don't go and look there!

Well I have to say Hawaii looks amazing! My kind of place and one day James, one day I will be there! I see you have been spending in Mont Blanc. I always remember going away with my SIL one year on Aurora and we had an officer on the table (I won't say his name) - he always said you haven't made it until you own a mont blanc pen!!!! I always remember him saying that whenever I see Mont Blanc!

I'm sad to hear that you will be heading to Oceana James. I don't even think we'll get to see each other briefly either will we on 14th April - not quite sure if we are bringing Natalie back or if she's going to ask her Nan or her brother to bring her back. Not sure how much room we'll have in the car, with our luggage too. And Nat's been shopping for new frocks whilst she's been home!

Talking of Nan (my mother) - I've just booked Mum and Dad on their very first cruise - May 21st (R105) - Mum's auntie died just before Xmas and having no children herself her estate has been left to the nieces and nephews. Mum got part 1 of a payout the other day and I had an e mail from a TA that I use and it all went from there really. She is so excited about the cruise. She's been out and brought my dad a dinner suit (M & S - good price considering I'm not sure they will ever cruise again, but I guess you should never say never). I have found some shirts in the wardrobe (Tom has 10 dinner shirts in the wardrobe James, talk about us women having far too many clothes), but he is a 17 collar nowadays and dad is a 16. I've found a couple of 16 collars and a 16 1/2, so he can try those today when he gets here. Saves them a bit more money to spend onboard. Also DS has a drawer of bow ties - So we'll see if there is anything dad likes in there - maybe he'll have to borrow Tom's :-) - I have seen a couple of nice dresses I am going to show my Mum today.

Anyway, back to the blog. The moon picture is amazing. That wasn't the night when it was closest to the earth was it? I can't remember what day it was, but it certainly lit up the bedroom and bathroom that night here!

Right, I am off to the gym. I haven't been as much as I'd like as we have been so busy! So I have to make the most of what I can. Nat is off out on her own today to visit a couple of friends. And I have 101 things to do before going to Southampton tomorrow.

Better get on. Love to all in the office. Tell Prakash I can't wait to see him again soon.

Enjoy San Francisco - I hope the weathers good for you.

Hi James, Hi Graham,

Yet another fantastic blog, a visit to Hawaii, yet another great place. I would love to visit the Diamond Head crater, all the memories of WWII - awesome
The beaches, well what can you say, anybody would like to have a shot at those waves. The cliffs look dramatic, some good views to be had I bet.
Honolulu again looks special and somewhere that must at sometime be visited, I know its on my list now.

Our next cruise is up to the Northern Cape on Grand Princess in June, then next January to South America on Star Princess (because this cruise was booked)
We are busy now looking for somewhere next summer when we will be traveling with my cousin and her hubbie, we are looking forward to that.

As I write this I calculate you will be nearing the Golden Gate Bridge. Have a good time in Fishermans Wharf, there are some good eateries down there,
Look forward to hearing from you again

Hi James,

Just looked at the web cam looks like a few white caps around as you head for San Fransisco.

I work with a few different people, one of whom comes from NZ. She has given me the Maori name for Wellington, which in an earlier report Graham was saying was difficult to pronounce. Here it is then i will give the pronunciation as we have determined it.

Te-Whangai-Nui-O-Te-Tara

Tear-Fanga-Nui-O-Te-Tara

My Friend who helped me was saying that WH is pronounced as FA.

Hope this piece of information is interesting.

Hi again Elaine

Enjoy your Weekender on Ventura.

Geoff

Hi James,

Just gone 6am here and a grey start to the day! Had a look at the webcam and all still pitch black. Forgot about time differences! Doh!

Glad to hear the inspections went well and Aurora passed with flying colours - as if anything else would happen!

A few more details about tbe Artemis final cruise have been released - we are to have Petula Clarke and Lionel Blair onboard. I am pleased to hear this as Lionel was sooo good on the Arcadia World cruise last year. His energy at his age was unbelievable ( he's around my dad's age and you'd never see him dancing the night away!).

Looking forward to the next installment and photos. Off to look at the webcam later on.

Hello James,

Just come off the Ventura for a weekend, my 18th suprise, a lovely ship! Hope to bump into you soon, im starting training in september at Warsash to become a deck officer and have two further cruises booked, would be nice to hear your own experiences of 'life at sea'!

Hi James

Happy birthday to you (clap, clap, clap), Happy birthday to you (clap, clap, clap) Happy birthday dear Jaaammeeesssssssss, Happy birthday to you (clap, clap, clap) :-) Hope you've had a wonderful day. I didn't realise our birthdays were so close!

Nat's gone off to bed (late night last night watching what was advertised as the four tops, but I think they were actually a tribute band - all all looked far too young to be originals, but they were very good). I'm bushed too, so about to go up the apples and pears to Bedfordshire. DS has just done a lovely family meal that was shared with my side of the family (Mum and Dad, brother and his family). So not only am I bushed I'm stuffed!

Lots to tell about our little Ventura weekender - young man in cabin opposite standing in the doorway of his cabin who must have either been just getting a shower or just got out of the shower, dropping his towel for all to see his nakedness! It's worrying to think that these are Britain's future! I just hope my kids never get up to anything like that - I'd be mortified! Other issues too - I'm sure we could discuss at some length next time I see you, but we did have a great time, so that's all that matters!

Thanks for the birthday greetings everyone.

Hey James are we the same age? ;-0)

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. Ros, I've been to Luton Hoo for afternoon tea, but not dinner. Will let you know what I think on Tuesday - mind you going to Claridges on Tuesday. Will check in on Wednesday and let you know how both went :-)

Elaine (aurorabore)

Ps, on the P&O facebook page I've uploaded a photo of my birthday cake - Go take a look !!!!!

Hi Elaine

Happy Birthday if it is your birthday on the 27th James and Happy Birthday to you Elaine for Today. Are you both the big -0??. No matter what age you are enjoy your day, i celebrated mine while on Artemis, in fact we were in Hiroshima.

Sounds like typical of the young people of today no respect,i hope you reported his stupid actions to someone on board.
Maybe we are just getting old, but the world was a safer place when we were growing up for sure, do you agree Elaine.

Enjoy your day.

Hi Geoff

I didn't mention it - it wasn't worth the hassle and aggravation! I have to say i have never noticed on Aurora/Oriana the noise in the outside corridor. I think the sound proofing on Ventura is not so good. It was a party cruise and I assume they were a stag party - some poor girl is marrying one of those immature little boys - quite sad really! Your right though Geoff - it wasn't like that back in our day! I'm pretty sure my husband didn't behave like that on his stag night. I just think it's the way social culture of today seems to be (well certainly here in the UK). :-(

Now I'm definitely sounding like a 50 year old :-)

Now what's all this about a riot in London over the weekend - I must go and take a look - again the nicer side of society in the UK - these aren't protesters - they are animals! Blaming the current government, even though they have inherited such a desperate situation from the previous government!

Oh dear I am disgusted to be called British!

Sounding old again - Lol :-)

Happy Birthday James, hope you have an amazing day, i couldnt think of a better way to spend it than onboard Aurora.

I couldnt agree more Elaine, Ventura was a lovely ship but was spoilt by some who were obvious 'first time cruisers' lol. There was also a long wait to disembark yesterday as i dont think anyone understood the procedure!

HI Elaine

I have seen the riots on the TV Poor police they are the thin blue line between us and these morons who are the future of our society to come. Mind you i think the majority of young people try to do the right thing, it is the minority that spoil it for the majority.

Anyway i will get off my soapbox now.

Enjoy your time this evening and also on Tuesday as-well.
