I'm coming on Azura for my first ever cruise and am so excited!
This is something I have always wanted to do and can't believe I am finally managing to do it.
I keep reading your blogs and looking at the ship's webcam and getting more excited by the minute.
My 16 year old daughter and I love sports and in particular table tennis, are you able to tell me any more about the sports facilities on board Azura?
Dear Kash,
You have made an excellent choice for your first cruise - We have Table Tennis, Deck Quoits, Shuffleboard, Interactive Video Games which we play on SeaScreen up on the open deck plus a great selection of other activities too!
Look forward to meeting you.
Hi Neil - Christmas and New Year seem along way off to me but I am not giving up hope of a summer cruise just yet (although hubby says we can afford it!!) Mind you we have got Artemis farewell cruise booked next April and yesterday we booked our Christmas and New Year on Aurora for 2011 !! Am I being just a little bit greedy ?
Enjoy the next few days on the Maiden cruise.
Ros
Dear Ros,
It seems as though you are never at home! Would it not be easier to move in with us!!
Hi Neil
What a privilege to be able to blog you. We have been such keen supporters of you and Karen down the years, latterly on Ventura in Sept 2008 when our two daughters; Rachael and Ruth and grand daughter Halle met you outside the Athena theatre next to Ramblas and so pleased that you have been chosen for Azura. We will hopefully see you on Azura on Sept. 28th for Venice or could it be Bennie. It would be lovely to meet her too as we became acquainted in Sept. 2009 on Ventura. The anticipation of a cruise just fills us with so much hope, we are on Ventura for a week in June 2010 and then Azura in Sept, hope to see some familar faces. Thank you all so much for making our cruises, our holidays, our time with you all so worth while. P&O, please take note of all these valuable servants of yours.

Cocktails and cabaret

A superb maiden cruise and what a wonderful sailaway from Gibraltar - possibly the busiest I have seen!!!! This evening is the final Formal night and Captain Keith Dowds has just completed his final speech at our farewell cocktail party.
We have met some wonderful people this cruise and it has been great to catch up with some regulars too. It has been a wonderful 16 nights and a lovely couple said to me today that they “would like to turn the ship around and start all over again”.
The brilliant Gary Wilmot is performing this evening in the theatre and we have another great cabaret in our aft show lounge (Manhattan) who is a superb tribute to Dusty Springfield.
The Headliners Theatre Company performed their final show last night which was also a smash hit. The show entitled 'When Swing Was King' pays tribute to that wonderful swing era with great songs and beautiful costumes.
Weather-wise although a bit chilly in the shade we have had some blue skies which was perfect today as we sailed past Ventura who is on her way to her first port of call.
I have also attached some photos of our cabaret 'Line Up' which I am sure you will agree is first class.

Thank you all for your comments, I do appreciate hearing from the blog readers and wanted to reply to your latest messages:
Hi Neil
Thank you for the replies to the messages, when I was at sea all the P&O ships were registered in the UK which was great a great British company with British registered ships.
Hope the Volcanic plume does not affect the passengers too much on their return to Soton. I suppose it would have been worse had it happened during the Winter months when you were cruising out of the Caribbean.
Regards Geoff Witts Perth
Dear Geoff,
I believe our passengers were in the best place as although we had to re-schedule some of our entertainment we had something great every evening. Tomorrow we have the brilliant Brian Conolly in the Playhouse theatre which everyone is looking forward to. Plus with the great ports of call and excellent food, I know where I would rather be....
Hi Neil
Aurorabore here (I call myself Aurorabore because I go on and on about how much I love Aurora) - Lol :-)
Lovely to read your replies to some of the posts that have been left.
It is great to hear that Bennie has been promoted to cruise director. Would you please pass on my congratulations to her.
Well apart from the flights disrupting even those on a cruise and the missed port due to high winds how are things going on the maiden cruise? Is everything falling into place. I did notice a lot of familiar staff onboard and I think it's good that the company have presumably got a mixture of old and new staff onboard. The oldies can show the new staff just what a P & O passenger expects.
I love stepping back on any of the ships in the fleet to see familiar faces. To me it's like coming home to a family reunion most cruises. This is what I think makes them so special. There aren't many holidays where you see the same familiar faces time and time again.
Today DD and I have been down to visit her friend, an officer onboard Artemis. Even there we saw familiar faces. It was a short but sweet visit (as turnaround days usually are). It was the first time I've been on Artemis. I can see why she appeals to the older P & O passenger. She reminded very much of a smaller version of Canberra ;-0)
Well been up since 6am to get down to Southampton so going to sign off. Keep up the good work with the blog.
Elaine (aurorabore) Brady
Dear Elaine,
I have already passed on your best wishes to Benne and she is looking forward to taking over from me in two weeks time. The Maiden cruise is going particularly well there is a great atmosphere onboard. We have had some really nice touches - for example just before we sailed from Venice we booked four gondoliers to serenade our passengers by the pool and we also showed it live on our great new SeaScreen.
Neil,
Nice to see your smiling face again.
Richard and I are really looking forward to our cruise on Azura (8th August), having had a great time on her sister ship Ventura 2 years ago.
It will be great to be onboard with you again, having sailed with you as our Cruise Director 3 times already (Arcadia, Ventura, Arcadia).
All the best,
Ian and Richard
Dear Ian and Richard,
Thanks very much for your message. Three times already, well I will have to start getting some new suits! Don't leave it too long before we see you here on Azura.
Hi Neil - Thanks for getting in touch with Pat for us seems we are missing a fabulous cruise, have had texts from them saying so, only sorry we missed out on this cruise with them, never mind we have Christmas and New Year with them to look forward too.
Ros
Dear Ros,
Are you counting the days yet? Christmas and New Year is always a very special time on board all of our ships and all the wonderful extra activities make it very exciting.
Hi Neil
You are doing a good job-don't know how you are finding time with the maiden voyage and the problems with air travel. Well done.
I wish I was on the maiden voyage! Did consider it but not my best time of year work wise and I did get the disappointment of the Aurora maiden out of the way by doing ventura's maiden. Enjoyed looking over Azura on the Thursday and the lunch. Sorry I didn't get the chance to speak to you. i am coming on Azura on 26 November with the girls, hope you are on then.
Bennie was our cruise director on Ventura in December, she was excellent. Always thought she would make a good Cruise Director, said the same of you after Canberra's Farewell although at the time we were surprised to see you as an ents officer having met you on Oriana when you were the Dance Instructor.
Keep up the good work - you have a tradition to keep after the good job Nigel did when he took over from James.
Best Wishes
Jean
Dear Jean,
You have a great memory to remember the days when I was dance instructor - coincidentally my dance partner Paula who I was working with then is here with us on Azura teaching the passengers this cruise.
Dear Neil
I have just booked our first cruise on Azura for the 8 August. This will be for our honeymoon and I am so excited! I have been following the blog and look forward to meeting you all.
Best wishes
Bronia Macon
Dear Bronia,
You have made an excellent choice with booking Azura and congratulations!! The added bonus is that all of your honeymoon photos will have excellent scenery and great backdrops.
All the best for now,
Speak soon,

Claire Sweeney and I
After the consecutive days in port and a wonderful day in Venice it is now the morning of another day at sea. One of the Entertainment Officers will shortly be hosting the ice carving demonstration, the deck sports are all up and running and the Azura Vocalists group is busy in the Planet Bar. Tonight, the passengers look forward to their black and white formal evening and some more great shows.
On the subject of cruise entertainment, in addition to our brilliant ‘Headliners’ Theatre Company we have had a group of theatre entertainers called ‘Westenders’ who have performed twice this cruise. They are a fantastic vocal group with over 40 West End credits to their name and some are from previous casts of Les Miserables..........
This Afternoon I will be hosting an informal chat show with Captain Keith Dowds; this will take place up on deck and be shown ‘Live’ on our Seascreen.
While we are on the subject of Seascreen tonight we will be hosting our James Bond-themed evening which consists of the entire area being dressed with props, a pre-film Bond Quiz and then finally a showing of Casino Royale.
We have had some challenges with regard to flights getting some cabaret artistes to us but thankfully (with a little re-scheduling) we have had great entertainment every night. The brilliant Brian Conley joined us just yesterday.
Okay, now for the story of the week. TV personality Claire Sweeney is with us this cruise performing her wonderful show in the theatre. I have known Claire for about 20 years and a few years ago we were in a show together. After Claire’s first show she said ‘I have a great idea, why don’t you come on and dance with me during one of my songs in the next show’ At the time I was reluctant as we had not rehearsed anything, but Claire insisted it was a great idea!!!! Quote: “We can just make it up as we go along.”
Anyway it is all going very well during this Samba/Salsa until Claire spins into my arm and we accidentally headbutt each other. At the time (although the audience did not notice) we just laughed and carried on.
The short story is: the next day Claire has a huge black eye and it seems to be getting blacker by the hour.
Claire is telling all the passengers that the Cruise Director gave her a Black Eye.
Claire has been brilliant about the whole thing and thinks it is very funny. She still looks beautiful!!
The moral of the story: ALWAYS REHEARSE

Your comments
Thank you for your many comments, I have enjoyed reading them and wanted to take the opportunity to reply. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding, and for the fact that I will not get the chance to reply to all comments - I have been kept busy re-working our cruise entertainment programme due to the disruption of flights!
Hello Neil.
It was lovely to see you on Sunday and we look forward to sailing on Azura in June. Until then I shall be following your blog.
Best wishes from Nicole
Dear Nicole, thank you very much for the message - you will have a great time here on Azura, she is beautiful!!
Hello Neil,
I have been avidly following James' blog all the way from here in Australia. I shall be very interested to hear your tales from the beautiful new Azura.
My father, up until the early 1980's, worked for P&O here in Australia so I have grown up with a substantial love of ships and cruising.
My mother was also born in England and her family lived in various parts of Essex, including her brother, my uncle, who lived with his family in Chelmsford where, I noticed, you were born.
Looking forward to reading more of your tales from Azura.
Jan
Dear Jan, my parents are still in Essex but no longer in Chelmsford - I often visit when I am on leave. One of my favourite places is the Antique place in Battlesbridge on the way to Chelmsford (you may know it).
Hallo Neil
Great that you are continuing now James is about to go on leave, Azura certainly looks a great ship, hoping you will post some interior shots, so we in blog land can dream of one day perhaps cruising on her, and enjoy what she has to offer.
Looking forward to the next instalment.
Regards Geoff Witts Perth
Dear Geoff, I am still trying to get some shots together - but you must come and cruise on her as she is already becoming some of our passengers' favourite.
Hi Neil,
So pleased that you've taken over James's blog, which we've followed since he started.
I know that he's left it in capable hands. Looking forward to seeing new places with you, we've booked on Azura for the Summer 2011, but are on Oriana this Summer.
Good luck with the blog, and Azura, she looks wonderful. Unfortunately we weren't able to come down for the viewing.
Norma & Peris
Dear Norma and Peris, it only seems yesterday that I saw you both in Southampton. Please send my regards to the rest of the Gang.
Hello Neil
Welcome to the blog.
I too have been following James's blog since it started sometime ago. I too am looking forward to your input on the blog. Looking forward to hearing all about Azura and your ports of call.
She is a beautiful ship and I think she will be our kind of thing (as you will see from my forum name)!
From what I've seen of her so far, she is very classy! My time onboard went by so quickly on Saturday night. I feel like I wasn't able to absorb everything. Only one thing for it - I'll have to book a cruise on her.
It was lovely to see lots of familiar faces. It was nice to see Bennie, I haven't seen her for ages. Such a shame as I only saw her briefly.
So again I will just have to book a cruise on Azura.
Anyway, hope all is going well with maiden cruise.
Bye for now
Elaine (aurorabore)
Dear Elaine, I love the name!!! I am so pleased that you saw Bennie. The good news is that she has been promoted to Cruise Director and will cover my leave in May.
Neil
Lovely to catch up with you on Friday evening. Goes without saying that I fell in love with Azura, so we will be back!!
Wish I was at Captains Gala Reception this evening - pics please!!
Jane, Mr C & Lizy x
Dear Jane, great to see you too and please say hi to Lizzie and tell her that it is not the same without her.
Wonderful to see that you're settling into your new home Neil.
We're looking forward to joining you in June, she looks more our sort of ship than Ventura - you could say we should be related to Elaine (see above) a.k.a. "Aurorabore" as we love the more traditional style.
Can't wait to read your next instalment .... if you need some technical assistance when I'm on board (A006) ... only joking!!
Anita & Mary Anderson
Dear Anita and Mary, thanks for the offer of the technical assistance - YOU NEVER KNOW!! There is also a wonderful traditional element here too.
Hi
Well what a fantastic ship we have been following her arrival Southampton and maiden voyage departure.
We can't wait for our Cruise in October with our Choir.
Clarity
Dear Clarity, I should be here in October and look forward to meeting up - and here on the Maiden Cruise we have had 65 passengers wishing to partake in the choir. Jemma Legg (Entertainment Officer) is doing a grand job!
Welcome on board Neil - James is hard act to follow but if anyone can do it you can, look forward to your blogs on Azura she is certainly a beautiful ship we were able to visit on Thursday and thoroughly enjoyed the day hopefully we will be able to travel on her in the near future, if you see our friends Jackie & Pat Dacey who are travelling with you on the maiden voyage give them our love, All the best
Ros
Dear Ros, I have spoken to Pat and sent on your best wishes. Shame you are not all on together.
Well, well, well - Neil Oliver - so good that you are taking over from James, I remember you from Canberra (you helped me at my muster station!!) - Hope all is going well so far and will follow your blog with interest.....
Regards for now,
Sara
Dear Sara, you have a good memory, I did the last year there and have some great memories. Just for the record I am still helping in the Muster Stations. Let me know when you are coming and I will look out for you at drills!!
Looking forward to hearing how Azura copes in rough weather. We are due to sail with you in June for our first ever cruise and my wife is still nervous!!
Please - no need to worry. Azura rides the waves beautifully, your wife will soon forget about weather when she comes onboard. Azura has so much Entertainment and wonderful facilities she will not have time to think about anything else.
We have friends on board this beautiful ship and only wish we had been able to join them, and can't wait to hear all about the trip. I am sure it will be delightful. ERK Glasgow
Dear Elizabeth, if I only knew your friend's names, I would give them a quick call to say hello. I am sure they are having a great time.
Hello Neil
I was wondering why does it show on the P&O site Azura registry Hamilton, Bermuda, when on the back she shows Southampton, where as Ventura clearly has Hamilton on her stern. Hope you can answer this.
Geoff
Dear Geoff, I will get the website checked, I can confirm we definitely have Southampton on the stern. If I am onboard the next time you travel with us I will let you have one of our prizes that we give to our passengers when they win the quiz.
Thank you again, and keep the comments coming!
All the best,
Neil

All the best,
Neil
Talking to Carol Marlow
Carol Marlow, Olly Smith and Atul Kochhar
Greetings from Azura,
I've just had the pleasure of catching up with Carol Marlow - our Managing Director - after her time on board during the maiden voyage, and wanted to share our conversation with the readers of this blog. I asked her:
Did you have a good time on board?
Yes it was wonderful to be on board and welcome everyone to Azura. We have so many regular passengers on board her Maiden, many of whom I have previously met on our other ships, that it was like a reunion! I also had the pleasure of meeting some newcomers to P&O Cruises, from a young honeymoon couple on their first cruise (congratulations again to them!) to cruisers that have been with other lines but never travelled with us before, so I was able to welcome them too.
How did you think the ship looked?
I was very pleased with the way the ship was looking - our teams on board have done a great job to prepare her for her first cruise, and I was delighted that so many people picked up on the link in style between her and Aurora - we tried to model her as the next Aurora - some really classic touches and rich decor on a very modern ship.
How did you find our new style restaurants on board? Did you have time to try them?
I was able to eat in Sindhu and The Glass House whilst I was on board. And both were spectacular! In Sindhu I enjoyed some dishes I had never had before (normally being a fan of chicken tikka masala at my local Indian restaurant!) so was delighted to discover some new tastes that I am sure will become favourites. I subsequently asked Atul about how they were prepared, and learnt more about the mixing of Indian spices with some of our well known British flavours. In the Glass House Olly suggested a wine I might try, which was delicious, and I had an excellent combination of 3 of the Small Plates - which didn't look very small to me when they arrived (!) plus a dessert with a Canadian sparkling dessert wine - which was very refreshing. So a very tasty meal there too.
Did you see the first Headliners Theatre company show?
Yes I saw most of it (I'll tell you why not all in a minute!) ....... and I thought they were fabulous. The first time performing to a ship full of passengers must always be nerve racking but they looked poised and professional, and as though they were enjoying every minute - which makes such a difference. Our passengers reaction afterwards was delightful, too.
So why didn't you see all the show?
Well, I needed to fly back to the UK from Malaga, along with Olly Smith and Atul Kochhar, but the local authorities closed the port due to high winds, so as you know the Captain pulled a rabbit out of his hat, and we were off to Palma instead and my colleague back in the office kindly rearranged our flights from Palma instead. Then the volcanic dust stopped all flights to the UK, and we were stuck again. Now Olly and Atul definitely needed to get back, as they had some important engagements coming up, so I spent most of Thursday evening on the phone to our emergency service trying to find some flights and a way back to the UK (hence unfortunately not seeing all of the show) . We finally succeeded in arranging a route and after leaving the ship at 9 am on Friday, I arrived back on my doorstep in the UK at 6am on Saturday! Well, on balance I think we did very well considering the press are saying this is the worst disruption to European travel since the second world war! It was a shame we couldn't just stay on board and enjoy the cruise with our passengers, but unfortunately our celebrities have busy schedules!
So, when are you next on board one of our cruise ships?
Oh, very soon. I will be out and about around the fleet over the spring and summer months - to see how our passengers are enjoying their cruising and how our officers and crew are doing. It would be very difficult to do my job well if I sat behind my desk the whole time. (.....And much less enjoyable!). And I also need to be back on Azura again soon, to try all the areas I didn't get round to this time!
Any message for our passengers on Azura's Maiden Cruise?
My best regards, and I hope you continue to enjoy this special cruise, and all Azura has to offer. It was a pleasure meeting up on board, as always. Till next time!
I was delighted that Carol found time in her busy schedule to be interviewed, and I look forward to updating you again from Azura!

Olly Smith, Ronnie Corbett and Atul Kochhar
All singing, all dancing...
Last night saw the dance floor in the Atrium come alive with Ballroom and Latin dancers as our hosts Paula and Bob presented one of their many events. And today the excitement continues…
Our daytime programme of cruise entertainment again attracted many passengers to the various events - including a wonderful cookery demonstration by celebrity chef Atul Kochhar, hosted by wine expert Olly Smith and myself. One of my Entertainment Officers Jemma Legg is hosting the Azura choir and she had over 65 passengers wishing to participate. And this evening we have a superb cabaret in the theatre by the name of Kev Orkian - some of you may remember him from previous cruises.
The rehearsals for the 'Headliners Theatre Company' are going very well and tomorrow evening is their first show which is 'Destination Dance' - a whistle-stop tour of dance from around the world, everything from an African dance routine to River Dance. A great show with a choice of three performance times during the evening to choose from, this enables our passengers to see a show either before or after dinner and then also gives them an opportunity to see another cabaret.
The Headliners theatre company we have here on Azura are all immensely accomplished, not only good singers but great dancers too. The cast are 14-strong and have worked incredibly hard over the last few months, starting with a very tough audition in London and then through their intensive rehearsals. They have a fantastic array of costumes and because of this we have to have 4 wardrobe ladies to look after the entire cast! Here’s some of the shows that will be performed during this cruise:

Just the beginning
We are now enjoying time at sea – it has been a lovely clear day with calm seas and yes, sunshine. The daily Horizon paper certainly has a packed programme of things to do and see on board. And there has already been lots of talk today about our celebrity cabaret, Ronnie Corbett, who remains a legend!

The theatre was filled to capacity this afternoon as I conducted an informal interview with celebrity chef Atul Kochhar and wine expert Ollie Smith; they were great together and we all thought they would be a superb comedy double act - the Ant and Dec of Azura!
I thought I would list just a few of our popular events and you will agree that we have a packed daytime entertainment programme:
Tennis, Travelling alone get-together, Handicraft class, Line dancing TV comedy Quiz, Hosted Bridge Class, Hosted Deck Quoits and Shuffleboard, Tour of Azura, Guest Speaker Nick Slope and Wine Tasting with Olly Smith…AND THAT WAS ONLY SOME OF THE MORNING EVENTS!!!!
Tonight is also the first formal evening and the Captain’s welcome on board party in the Atrium and Manhattan, where our passengers will be welcomed personally by the Captain and the Senior Officers. All of the Entertainment Team are looking forward to hosting the first ever session of fun interactive games on SeaScreen.
A great first day at sea with something for everyone. Our Managing Director Carol Marlow presented a very informative talk in the Playhouse theatre. Jane Middleton, our Annie Lennox tribute, attracted a great audience in Manhattan - the atmosphere was electric. It was also fantastic seeing our elegant passengers dressed in their formal attire on the dance floor in the Atrium.
I must say, it has been a wonderful start to Azura’s maiden voyage and this cruise is just the beginning!

Azura's maiden voyage
Everyone has been working hard since they joined Azura in the ship yard and now she is finally ready to sail on her maiden voyage. Our Naming ceremony was absolutely superb and wherever you turned there seemed to be another celebrity. Our godmother looked stunning, as you can see above. The weather has so far been very kind and up to now no rain which is great as our passengers are already wondering around the ship and preparing for a sailaway. Everyone seems very excited about this special cruise. The champagne sailaway will start shortly and already the masses are gathering on the open decks.
Azura has just been blessed by The Arch Deacon of Bournemouth on the quayside along with a speech from our Managing Director Carol Marlow. The brass band has started to play - Wish you were all here to be a part of this great atmosphere.

Tonight we look forward to our first evening on board as all of our public lounges, bars and restaurants come alive with colours, aromas, music and entertainment!
It’s now late in the evening and it has been a fantastic first night. Adrian Walsh, a great comic, was brilliant this evening and everyone enjoyed the show. The entertainment in Manhattan and Malabar also went very well. I’m now going to head down to Manhattan and see how our DJ, Michael is getting on with his busy venue.

Beautiful Bracciano - Italy
Odescalchi Castle with a passing bird! This 15th Century, Fairytale Castle, with its captivating elegance is where Hollywood Star Tom Cruise was married in 2006.Hello Again for one last time from Arcadia!
10 April Arcadia was alongside in Civtavecchia - the Port for The Eternal City of Rome. Many Arcadians set off to spent a gloriously sunny day roaming around Rome.
For those who wanted to see the country side of Lazio on this brilliantly sunny April day the excursion to take was that to beautiful Bracciano.
From the Castle you can see Bracciano Lake which mirrors its beautiful surroundings. The tranquil Lake was formed within an ancient volcanic crater.
Another lovely view looking over the Castle's Chapel.........to the shimmering lake.
The Castle is privately owned and the family name of the owners can be translated as 'Little Bear' hence the statue above............
The Castle dominates the small typically Italian town of Bracciano.
A typical intimate Square.
The local Ham and Cheese on display at the Grocers - as you know I am very fond of Grocery Shops as my Father was a Grocer!.........and I have served my time behind the counter..........and many the ham I have carved. Give me a cheese and a cheese wire and I am sure I would still be a expert slicer!!!..............
The Lake was like Dressmakers Velvet (how I love that phrase) as the Arcadians took a leisurely boat ride to soak up the wonderful lakeside sights and scenery.
Looking back at the Castle............
The Castle disappears into the distance as we start our half hour mini Cruise to the other side of the lake....
Reflected in the azure waters - they say it is so pure that you could drink the water..........our first glimpse of Trevignano, a small lakeside town.
If you can pull yourself away from the delightful shore side you can explore the many narrow streets............I look to nosey in windows!
A lovely small relief of a goat..................this was on the front of a house by the door. The house that I grew up in, in County Antrim, had a lion's head protruding from the facade.
Wouldn't you like to wander through this inviting street...................?
This is the main square with the town hall on the right hence the flag....
One of the many swans that make their home on the lake............a bit like our ship - smooth on the surface and paddling underneath........!Here you can also see the black volcanic sand. Woof woof there's a swan.............!!!!
This is a view from the lakeside looking back towards the square and a ruin of a castle on the hillside above.
This is a view from the lakeside looking back towards the square and a ruin of a castle on the hillside above.I enjoyed a lovely lunch in Civitavecchia with friends today - the temperature was just perfect for dining alfresco, enjoying spaghetti with a tomato sauce; the best pizza I have ever tasted, fresh salad and a lovely slice of lemon cake to finish oozing with a fresh lemon filling........bellissimo!
This was a fantastic port to finish the Round World Cruise on, the ambiance, the people and the Mediterranean Sun all combined to make the perfect day.................Oh what a perfect day.....I feel a song coming on..........
We have four sea days now on our way back to our home port of Southampton. What a voyage of memories this has been and it has been a great privilege to share mine with you. Thank you for all your friendship and messages of appreciation - it makes it all worth while.
Best wishes to Neil Oliver, I pass my 'Bloggers Mantle' to him on the mighty vessel AZURA newly named by Darcey Bussell.
Wishing AZURA well on her maiden Voyage with calm seas, smooth sailing and God speed for her future.
Arrivederci,
James
Ancient Greece
The Corinth Canal runs through the isthmus just east of New Corinth. It is four miles long, seventy six feet wide, twenty six feet deep and over two hundred feet from the seabed to the bridges on the top.Good Day Everyone,
On Tuesday 8 April Arcadia was alongside in Piraeus - Greece. This is a busy harbour where most people head off to visit Athens and the Acropolis. However some Arcadians decided to visit the nearby ancient splendours of Corinth and to follow in the footsteps of St Paul.
From the bridges across the Corinth Canal - you can have an excellent view down into the depths - but you would need a head for heights!
The canal was built between 1881 and 1893 and it can take ships of up to about 10,000 tons gross and shortens the distance between Italy and Piraeus by two hundred miles.
The morning that we were there some fearless folk were preparing to bungy jump from one of the bridges.....................rather them than me................!
In the days of St Paul, Ancient Corinth possessed a forum larger than Rome, with temples, theatres, baths , shops and basilicas. After leaving the wonder of the Corinth Canal some Arcadians went to see the site of Ancient Corinth as it is now. Above you can see the Doric Temple of Apollo which overlooks the beautiful Saronic Gulf.
The city was guarded by the imposing fortress on the heights of the Acrocorinth and its ruins can still be seen today.
In ancient days - Corinth was a wealthy and licentious city. One of the most impressive relics today is the beautifully paved twenty five foot wide Lechaion Road , where St Paul walked and preached.
From the the temple of Apollo you can look over the city as it is today. It is a marvellous feeling to think that you are, indeed, walking in the footsteps of St Paul..............

Above you can see the altar of Zeus which was the centre point of the city. Anybody of any importance, when wishing to address the populace, would stand with their back to this stone. Without doubt, St Paul would have stood here.

The site of Ancient Corinth is very well preserved and excavations are on going. It was a warm morning with a cloudless blue sky when the Arcadians visited. Had the Roman baths been in better condition some of us may well have enjoyed a refreshing dip...........!

A good picture of the Lechaion Road and on the right you can make out the remains of shops. These are the original white marble slabs - more ideas for my Patio!!..........

Look carefully through the "round window" ....what can you see? This also reminds me of a porthole in my early days at sea - before ships had windows!..............or balconies.......
The Corinth Museum houses an impressive collection of relics unearthed from the ruins. Did you know that ancient sculptors specialised in either sculpting bodies or heads? Here you have a selection of "bodies" awaiting their portrait heads.
More of the many wonderfully preserved statues......
This sphinx was "discovered" by a local farmer when his plough hit it...hence the damage. What other wonderful treasures are yet to be discovered waiting under the warm Greek soil?
Many mosaics were found intact and have been removed from their original sites to display in the museum and, of course, to preserve them.

The workmanship and artistry displayed in these mosaics that are more than 2,000 years old is amazing.
The museum also has displays of ceramics and glass that were found on site.
One relic far too big for the museum is the amphitheatre...................
As the Arcadians left to return to the ship there was time for some last, lingering looks at Ancient Corinth through the branches of some olive trees.
I hope you enjoyed your photographic tour of Ancient Corinth.................

Roy and Pat Upton send greetings to their friends Harold and Margaret who are sailing on AZURA's Maiden Voyage on the 12 April 2010. My thanks to Harold and Margaret for following this blog for the Round World Cruise.
Peter and Diana Piper just love my blog and wish to say hello to their three children - Paul, Mark and Kirsty. Diana just loves the fact that her family can keep up with their movements on this Round World Cruise!
Heather Jenkins says her son John in Swansea is an avid follower also!
Don and Meryl Powell from Porthcawl say Hi to Joanne and family in Chesham.
And finally Eileen Mann says 'hello' to her Mother in Law, Edith who is enjoying following her son's travels on Arcadia. James also says 'Hi' to Edith!!
We may be coming to the end of the World Cruise but there is still a great deal going on. Yesterday afternoon The Palladium Theatre was packed to capacity for the 'Arcadia Dancing' Competition. The Celebrity Judge was Lionel Blair no less! The winners were Deputy Cruise Director Lizzie Tather and her dance partner Lourdio Coutinho - they performed a sizzling Salsa - that had everyone exhausted just looking at it! After Dinner I was back in The Palladium to another packed house to enjoy a fantastic performance from West End Singer - Petrina Johnson. Cruise Director Sally Sagoe runs an action packed programme - where does she get her energy from? The Dance competition was inter departmental - a huge success and the participants practised for weeks just for the one matinee performance.
I am busy getting ready to hand over to Patrick Harrison - Executive Purser who will be joining on the 15 April 2010.
Bye for Now,
James.
And now these three remain 'Faith, Hope and Love'. But the greatest of these is Love.
