The latest from Carol

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write; it seems the weekend has seen quite a lot of discussion. I will try to respond to as many comments as I can, so let’s get started!

One of the subjects raised by Nia and Jonathan was P&O Cruises refusal to allow babies under six months to travel. Rather than for insurance purposes, this policy was determined first and foremost to ensure the safety of our child passengers.

We do have excellent medical centres on board but they are not equipped to provide medical care for very young babies. We do not carry paediatricians, nor do we have the specialised equipment, drugs and supplies that small babies may need. In addition, many of the ports we visit do not have specialist paediatric facilities to hand and often speed is of the essence in treating ill babies successfully as they can deteriorate extremely quickly as I’m sure you’re aware. We are sorry if this has caused disappointment amongst passengers with young children but our intention is to act in everyone’s best interests.

On a related subject there was an anonymous post asking why infants must be booked into a 3 or 4 berth stateroom. For health and safety reasons, we have limits as to how many passengers can occupy specific areas of the ship and this is to comply with these regulations.

Laura, you asked why newer ships are installed with showers and not baths. A lot of our research shows more people moving toward having showers than baths, therefore more cabins are created with showers. It is also worth noting that showers take up less space giving more room for other facilities within the cabin.

John, thanks very much for pointing out a link was not working on the website. The page should now be working – if anyone would like to brush up on P&O Cruises’ heritage, the information can now be found at www.pocruises.com/heritage

Another popular area of debate is The Portunus Club benefits. We are in the process of looking at the benefits of the scheme but we have not made any specific decisions as yet. Therefore your comments are very timely and much appreciated. It’s been really interesting to hear your thoughts on what benefits you would value most and I can assure you that your views will be added to other feedback we’ve received for consideration.

Jonathan, one of your queries related to whether Ocean Village passengers are being targeted with Ventura. Clearly Ocean Village offers a very different cruise experience from P&O Cruises. That said, with Ocean Village ceasing to offer cruises this autumn, passengers will naturally be seeking alternatives. Several of our ships have facilities and itineraries that may well appeal to someone seeking a more relaxed, child-friendly environment on board so it probably stands to reason that some of our ships will be considered by Ocean Village passengers along with other operators’ ships.

You also enquired why more of Ventura’s funnel had been painted. We were concerned that the buff colour on Ventura’s funnel, when seen from the front or behind, could not be seen, making Ventura difficult to identify as a P&O Cruises ship. Therefore more of her funnel was painted. Once this had been done, opinions were divided - some liked the look of it and others didn’t, so Azura’s funnel has not received this extra treatment.

Another common theme amongst the posts was the matter of itinerary planning. As you can imagine this is a very considered, complex process and we have a specific department that plans our itineraries. I will pass all of your comments (and wishes for specific itineraries) on so that they may be used for reference in future programme planning.

To Alan who responded to my reply on itinerary planning, I am sorry that I did not respond to your point fully - we do try to take into account demand from all areas of Britain. In 2010 we offer the choice of 14 cruises in the Scottish school holidays, and by region there is a good variation across Central Med cruises (4), Western Med (4), Cruise Breaks (2), Short Fjords (2) and Baltic (2) but clearly we aren't able to accommodate everyone’s needs. We will consider your point again when looking at next year's itineraries.

Thelma, you asked whether we will be repeating the Alaska cruise in 2012. We haven’t finalised our 2012 itineraries beyond April at this point, we will be looking at these over the next few months.

Mr and Mrs Smith, I am really sorry to hear you had such a difficult experience trying to book your 2010 World Cruise. Please could you get in touch separately because I’d like to respond to you personally to gain a better understanding of what happened. You can address correspondence to me at Carnival House, 100 Harbour Parade, Southampton SO15 1ST.

Once again thanks for posting and I hope to catch up with you again later in the week.

Kind regards,
Carol

Hi Carol, as Sir Humphrey would have said to Jim Hacker "A courageous decision MD." I think it great you are prepared to go direct to your customers and give honest answers. You will probably need the break when James takes back the helm, and I for one will look forward to your next spell.

Thanks Duncan

Hello. I have some suggestions for Portunus Club benefits if an additional tier is considered or the current top tier is enhanced which include something in the cabin on arrival instead of something to take home - a bottle of wine and/or a fruit basket and/or robes and slippers in any cabin grade.

An alternative to the Gold lunch could be a voucher for a free dinner at a select dining venue.

A free celebration cake if a birthday or anniversary is celebrated at the time the passenger is on board.

A booklet containing vouchers for free internet access (x hrs per week), money off a tour or spa/salon treatment, a free cocktail (or two) or other drink of choice, a free photograph.

I look forward to hearing more about these developments.

Thank you

Hi Carol
There have been three posts involving incorrect prices given by the Concierge Services re thermal suite prices on Arcadia, myself and two others, all who were given the same set of prices, which are actually incorrect. So please could we have a full explanation on this,
it is unacceptable, as Concierge seem to give one set of information only to correct it later. I have had no satisfactory response from them since I returned from my cruise in June, the prices they gave were twice the price on board! So I would appreciate an answer to this as I am sure the other two posters will.
thanks

Thanks for answering, and to the person who asked, about Ventura's funnel. I had been wondering why it had changed, but hadn't thought to ask somewhere like here.
I'm afraid to say that I'm in the 'liked it before' camp!

Hello Carol
First we would like to thank you for your response and also to say we too did not want to be Anonymous! but not up to Blogging so like others do not know what to do!

We would also like to apologise for intimating that you did not reply to correspondence, actually it was Mr David Dingle and Mr Nigel Esdale.

As for writing to you at Harbour Parade, well we tried Mr Dingle at Carnival House and Mr Esdale at Richmond House, so we really do not hold out much hope. Both were sent recorded delivery and for their personal attention but were intercepted by "customer service".

We shall see.

I have all correspondence except the last letter received from your customer service department, which I regret was torn into pieces in frustration. My husband has totally given up on the matter.

Feeling slightly better

Hi Carol

In response to your suggestions for Portunus Club benefits for gold members, I have to say my two favourites are from the Princess Captain Circle which are the generous free amount of internet usage and the free laundry. I miss these so much on P&O.

Hi Carol
We both would like to give a huge vote of thanks to the medical team on Ventura, especially Julie Colmer who literally saved my life following a cardiac arrest on board on 7th June 2010 The sad thing about it all was that I thought a 65th birthday cruise would be a great idea and we would book the white Room for the 8th(my birthday) also we found out Marco would be on board so we thought we stood a chance of meeting him thus enhancing my special day. It was not to be, collapsed on 7th in hospital on 8th in a white room. However the most excellent standard of service both myself and my wife received from your medical and customer service teams was well appreciated. We will be back on board as soon as allowed by the Medics. Thank you all

I would just like to say that I like the funnel on Venture how it is now all one colour. I also like the idea which Anonymous said about the Portunus Club benefits.

Hi Carol

I just wanted to say how nice it is that you are spending time on the blog and taking note of passengers comments.

I'm a very happy P&O Cruises passenger and looking forward to being on Oceana again in September.

As a single traveller, whilst I understand the reasons for the single supplements, I would appreciate any comments on how the percentage is arrived at - I have noticed that it varies depending on itinery and ship.

Thank you
Victoria
