Thank you all for your comments, I have been reading them with great interest.
Before I respond to some of your recent posts, I thought you may like to hear that I recently sailed on Ventura for a few days. Passengers certainly seemed to be having a good time, and I met some interesting passengers who I had met on Ventura last summer, so it’s fabulous to note that she already has a growing number of followers. I also met several passengers who I have met before on our other ships - so it’s also nice to see our passengers trying our different ships - all still giving that P&O Cruises feel that our regulars enjoy so much. Whilst on board I was keen to thank our crew - especially the recent winners of our Outstanding Performers of the Month award, voted on by our passengers. I had the pleasure of having lunch with them, and finding out a little more about them and their families - it was a lovely gathering. They really are an inspiration to the rest of us!
Maureen, I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed Arcadia’s luxurious spa experience so much. We will look into your specific query and come back to you separately on this if that’s ok. I hope you have a fantastic time and enjoy a really memorable wedding anniversary on board.
There was an anonymous post regarding basing one of our ships in Scotland. You will note we are sailing more around the UK and call at several Scottish ports but as you will know our UK home port is Southampton and all our ex UK cruises depart from there. I'm afraid we don't currently have plans to embark passengers from other ports but thank you for your thoughts.
Alan, thank you for your feedback on the planning of our itineraries. We have more of our ships on northern itineraries at this time of year as this is the best time to go to the fjords and the Baltic and there is a huge demand for these cruises. There is a fairly short window for cruises to these areas due to the weather and so the only way we can satisfy that demand is to include several of our ships in that particular deployment at that time. As schools then break up and the focus turns to summer holidays to the Med we shift our emphasis as you have seen. Sorry to disappoint you - we clearly need more ships!
At present ship visits are only available on turnaround days in Southampton when passengers disembark and embark due to concerns that visits on port days could interfere with our passengers’ holiday experience. As you can imagine, such matters are a fine balancing act as we would like to enable as many people as possible to see our new ships but have always to be mindful of the passengers on board enjoying their holiday. The idea of offering ship visits in other ports around the UK is in discussion at present and we are looking into ways of ensuring the quality of our passengers’ holiday experience would not be compromised in any way, so watch this space!
Yvonne, I’m glad Flexicruise suits your needs. It is a great way to save on your holiday fare and by grouping the holidays as we have, you know you will be doing one of two itineraries and certainly going to the Caribbean. It’s a little way off yet, but I wish you both a great holiday.
Jules W, you raised the subject of our Customer Satisfaction Surveys. We find these an invaluable source of feedback and appreciate the time our passengers take to fill these in after their cruise. The questionnaires are reviewed in detail, comments logged and any matters are raised with the relevant departments on board and ashore in order to strive to continually improve your holiday experience. Your comments help us to shape your holiday and help pinpoint any tweaks needed to make your experience even better.
Jules, you enquired why passengers were not called to dinner on Azura as on the rest of the fleet and I’m pleased to be able to shed some light on the matter. We are currently looking at the best way to manage our dining times and passenger arrivals into dinner on Azura and are therefore trialling different ideas (eg not making announcements). It’s certainly not our intention to have our passengers arriving at vastly different times and in fact we have found in general this non announcement idea quite successful, with our passengers normally arriving within 5 - 10 minutes or so but not all at exactly the same moment, which is preferable. However, thank you for your feedback - we will continue to test to arrive at the best solution.
Thank you also for your feedback about your recent experiences on Azura and sorry to hear the change to show times caused you disappointment. We are looking into when the best show times are on that ship, depending upon what else is happening that day. We will continue to monitor passenger feedback on this.
I’m pleased to hear you enjoyed what Azura has to offer. A new ship is always exciting and her crew has worked extremely hard over the past few months to ensure she is a great success. They will be very pleased to read your comments and I’m sure you’ll find many familiar faces on board to welcome you come 28 September. Have a lovely time.
Last but not least, I would also like to thank whoever left the comment about our DVDs (posted as ‘anonymous’). I was sorry to hear you have felt some past purchases fell short of P&O Cruises’ usual standards. I will certainly be following up your comments. Our photography team has been working on a long-term project to improve the DVDs, and the feedback so far has been very positive. I have seen a recent example from Azura and I was very pleased with the results. The DVD is filmed, edited and produced in time for the final day of the cruise and as I'm sure you'll agree this is no mean feat. That said, we need to make sure they are professional productions and we will work to make sure of that with the team. I hope you'll find that our future DVDs ('my cruise diary' as it is now named) are indeed of a professional standard and quality, designed to capture the special memories of your time on board with us.
To anyone reading this ahead of their next holiday, I wish you a wonderful cruise. The summer weather seems to have gone on holiday itself today, so you might have chosen a good time to get away.
I’ll write again next week, until then have a good weekend.
Kind regards,
Carol

Dear Carol
As a Gold member of the portunus club I am very interested as to how P&O is going to change it. Are you going to allow points from sister companies to be awarded in full?
Moving away from the portunus club and to the Ventura, I was just wondering why more of Ventura's funnel housing is now painted buff. It looked better, in my opinion, when it was painted the same way as Azura's funnel.
We have also heard rumours that Ventura is the ship P&O are using to target the Ocean Village customers. Is this correct? We loved the ship when we first cruised on her in her maiden season but felt she had lost a bit of her sparkle when we were on her recently (not enough to prevent us returning in September 2010).
I would also like to know why P&O do not vary the itineries of their 16 night Med cruises. Surely with so many ships you could come up with different ports of call. We enjoy the long cruises in the summer but are finding we have visited the ports many times before and this would be one reason we would consider another cruise line (as yet my wife and I have only ever cruised P&O).
My wife and I are also intrigued as to why P&O do not allow children under 6 months to travel. Is this due to insurance reasons?
Kind regards
Jonathan
Hi Carol,
It's great to see you back on James' blog to get passengers feedback!
I have a query on behalf of my parents and I. We love Arcadia as we prefer the child free option, however we would like to investigate other ships in the fleet. We were interested in Azura when she was launched as she was not aimed so much at a family market. Unfortunately mum and I are both bath lovers and Azura has showers only according to our research. Why are newer ships installed with showers and not baths? We find the suite option does not suit our needs as they sell out faster and are so much more expensive. Thanks in advance for your comments!
In response to Jonathan's comment above, we've also pondered the 6mth rule for infants. I could accept reasoning for e.g transatlantic voyages, however we've just returned from a wonderful Disney cruise with our 4mth old, so it seems that cruise lines can obtain insurance for infants.
I also have a question for Carol regarding infants. Why do we always have to have a cabin for 3 or 4 when travelling with our infant, even though they sleep in a travel cot and do not use the upper berth. We've been disappointed on a few occasions when all 3/4 berth cabins have gone or been quoted ridiculous prices when ther were plenty of 2 berth cabins to be had - but have not been allowed to travel in those cabins with our infant.
Sorry, I did not give my name when responding above (21:04). It's Nia. Many thanks. PS Welcome back, Carol.
Hi Carol
I appreciate the time you took to reply to my post, but iam afraid you have missed my point. You replied as the schools break up then the ships will be moved to the southern cruises, but that was my point our schools have now been off for over a week and there is no choice at present for us to cruise as a family, apart from Ventura which the itinery was not very exciting.I appeciate that you have to appeal to all but have only the one ship catering for families at this time is limiting.Perhaps Britain Favourite Cruise LIne should now be renamed as "Englands Favourite Cruise Line".Are the Northern cruises really all that popular when we recieve numerous offers at this time and they seem to all be for northern cruises.

Just received your email regarding booking now for your 2012 World cruise. Tried to do that for 2009, paid £xxxx deposit and went nowhere! Absolultely no help from your customer service they really did not want to listen and you couldn't be bothered to reply to our correspondence! You obviously have time for cruises and blogs though? Perhaps you didn't think it was important enough. We have been on many cruises with you and it counted for nothing.
Much aggrieved Mr & Mrs Smith
Actually I should have said the World Cruise was for 2010 not 2009 and it was to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary!!
Much aggrieved Mr & Mrs Smith
Will you be repeating the Alaska cruise with Arcadia in 2012? Really want to go but due to family commitments cant go in 2011.
Thanks Thelma
I noted in the 2011 brochure details of the history of P&O Cruises and that there is a dedicated page on the P&O Cruises website. That page does not appear to work. Is there a mistake or has the page not appeared yet?

Firstly, I don’t really want to be Anonymous, but I don’t know what the other options mean!
I just wanted to say that I agree with the comments made a couple of days ago about the Cruise DVDs.
We bought a copy of “My Cruise Diary” on Azura A005 (Baltics) and were very disappointed with it - not least because the cover shows a photo of Ventura, not Azura! We very nearly didn’t buy it for that reason, but did so because we thought that it included some very good footage of the crew that was showing on several occasions in the Photo Gallery. It doesn’t.
Our first impression was that the quality was better than one we bought on Ventura last September but, sadly, the content isn’t. The DVDs are now called “My Cruise Diary”, but there is relatively little that is specific to our cruise. Our overall impression is that it is a standard DVD with videos (of varying quality) of all the ships in the fleet and library shots of the ports, to which some footage of on-board events - presumably taken on our cruise - have been added. The end result is that it is disjointed and the volume levels change.
The DVD we had from Ventura was much better, in terms of content, as it included members of the crew shown in various locations around the ship and parts of the ship that we don’t normally get to see, like the engine room and the laundry.
These DVDs, like the photographs, are expensive for what they are. Our next cruise is to the Fjords on Oceana next month. We won’t be buying a Cruise Diary for that one, or any other future cruises.

Carol,
Thank you for clearly reading what people are saying and looking into issues.
For what it's worth, my view on the Portunus benefits...I'd like some free internet minutes.....and free laundry. Also like the discount on OBS.
I know everyone will have different priorites/wishes so you can't please everyone. Perhaps you could do vouchers...that can be used for different things? So one voucher that can be worth either one free wash/10 minutes internet/free glass of wine....people then exchange it for what is important to them. You could then issue a number of vouchers depending on what level of Portunus they are at??
Thank you Carol, for taking the time to read and answer the comments.
Can I please ask you to look at a comment that was made a few days ago regarding Thermal suite pricing.
I am due to sail on Azura A009, I contacted P&O shoreside a couple of months ago to enquire about the current prices onboard. The email we received was exactly the same as the the one the other poster quoted.
I have now emailed conceirge service to ask for clarification of costs, however, it seems that either their information is out of date or the ships are not sticking to agreed tariffs, can you shed any light on the situation?
Many thanks
Amanda
Hi Carol
Jonathan raised a good point about Portunus points and sister companies,i would like to ask if P&O will consider points for those of us that sail with P&O Australia, not all of us can afford to go to the UK and board a P&O ship, but being able to get points aboard the ships in the Australian fleet would be a good idea to be able to get up to the various levels of membership.
Thank you for continuing the blog while James is on leave, do you know when he will return.
Best Regards Geoff Witts Perth
Dear Carol,
Firstly, it's so good to see a Chief Executive taking time to read passengers' comments. We are looking forward to sampling Azura next year in the Caribbean.
My query is about fly cruises to the Mediterranean. We are looking to do a cruise to the Med. possibly in 2012. We would love to go on Adonia but we do not want to be in the Med. in November through to January. What we would love to see is Adonia in the Med in June, July and certainly September. We have been looking at cruises that include several Greek and Italian ports with other cruiselines as P&O do not offer this. We would much prefer to stay with P&O. As someone has said it would be good to see some different itineraries for the other ships as well.
My other point about the Portunus Club and benefits is that we usually cruise in either a suite or mini-suite, once a year. So we spend a lot of money but at the rate of cruising only once a year it will take us a long time to get to be Gold Members. I appreciate that this is our choice and that there are benefits with suites and minisuites but looking at Princess for example their suite benefits far outweigh those that P&O offer.
We love cruising with P&O and hope that we will see some interesting itineraries in the future. We are not keen on the repetition of the Caribbean ports and would like to see the different ships stopping at different ports. One port we particularly regarded as magical is Mayreau in the Grenadines which seems to have been dropped now.
Thank you for taking time to read the comments.
Hello Carol,
Thank you for replying to comments made by various people and I would like to make a couple.
Firstly there have been a few posts about itineries during school holidays and I would like to make a comment about this. My husband and daughter work in schools and quite like having child-free holidays but we have found that the only time we can book such a cruise is during the summer holidays as Arcadia and Artemis (and soon Adonia) never seem to have 7 or 14 day cruises that fit entirely within the other school holidays. Unlike some people who are willing to take their children out of school during term time staff are unable to do so.
Secondly comment regarding thermal spa prices I have been quoted the same prices as Janet Higgins by Concierge Services. I emailed to see if I can pre-book spa passes at these prices, as did one of the other posters, I was told I could pre-book them and have now emailed asking for them to be arranged at the prices quoted. It seems to me that everyone is given conflicting information and this should be addressed as soon aspossible so that everyone is given the correct details. I am awaiting a response to my pre-booking request and I am just hoping that it is made to my satisfaction before we sail on Arcadia on 18th July.

Dear Carol
Am excited to see your World Cruises for 2011 and 2012. I have studied the South American cruise and thought this to be a wonderful itinerary. Are you thinking of doing a similar cruise in the future that would include a trip to Antartica and drop the USA element as we have done this before. We are not keen on fly cruises due to baggage restrictions so would love to do the Antartic from Southampton and back. This year you have re-introduced Alaska so perhaps you could look at the Southern version.
Enjoying your blog.
Carol,
Re Cruise First on Travel Channel
This so called authoratative agency sells cruises on Oriana at present. Yet they show as the promotional material a dvd shot on Aurora back in 2000. Was on her when it was filmed. They are not exactly putting over a professional image if they can't get this bit right.
Carol sorry to be anonymous but I am still getting the hang of this.
Thank you for your reply re the DVD. I look forward to purchasing the ' new improved' ones... and will pass them around friends and family.
thank you for your reply.
Hi Carol,
We do hope that you are not intending moving the goal posts regarding the number of points needed to achieve Portunus Gold tier status. We have just booked two cruises that take us up to gold and are so looking forward to all the current benefits it brings. Its taken us ten years to achieve this as like many others, we have to take our holidays during the peak school holiday period. We were just about to commit to our first 'gold' cruise, but now feel we may be let down should you move the threshold upwards. Up till now, all our cruises bar one which was with Cunard have been with P & O, can you assure us that we would still be in the gold tier on 1501 points next summer, which would give us the confidence to book again. Thank you for taking the time to read our comment and look forward to your response.
Kind regards, Karen & Tony
