Odescalchi Castle with a passing bird! This 15th Century, Fairytale Castle, with its captivating elegance is where Hollywood Star Tom Cruise was married in 2006.Hello Again for one last time from Arcadia!
10 April Arcadia was alongside in Civtavecchia - the Port for The Eternal City of Rome. Many Arcadians set off to spent a gloriously sunny day roaming around Rome.
For those who wanted to see the country side of Lazio on this brilliantly sunny April day the excursion to take was that to beautiful Bracciano.
From the Castle you can see Bracciano Lake which mirrors its beautiful surroundings. The tranquil Lake was formed within an ancient volcanic crater.
Another lovely view looking over the Castle's Chapel.........to the shimmering lake.
The Castle is privately owned and the family name of the owners can be translated as 'Little Bear' hence the statue above............
The Castle dominates the small typically Italian town of Bracciano.
A typical intimate Square.
The local Ham and Cheese on display at the Grocers - as you know I am very fond of Grocery Shops as my Father was a Grocer!.........and I have served my time behind the counter..........and many the ham I have carved. Give me a cheese and a cheese wire and I am sure I would still be a expert slicer!!!..............
The Lake was like Dressmakers Velvet (how I love that phrase) as the Arcadians took a leisurely boat ride to soak up the wonderful lakeside sights and scenery.
Looking back at the Castle............
The Castle disappears into the distance as we start our half hour mini Cruise to the other side of the lake....
Reflected in the azure waters - they say it is so pure that you could drink the water..........our first glimpse of Trevignano, a small lakeside town.
If you can pull yourself away from the delightful shore side you can explore the many narrow streets............I look to nosey in windows!
A lovely small relief of a goat..................this was on the front of a house by the door. The house that I grew up in, in County Antrim, had a lion's head protruding from the facade.
Wouldn't you like to wander through this inviting street...................?
This is the main square with the town hall on the right hence the flag....
One of the many swans that make their home on the lake............a bit like our ship - smooth on the surface and paddling underneath........!Here you can also see the black volcanic sand. Woof woof there's a swan.............!!!!
This is a view from the lakeside looking back towards the square and a ruin of a castle on the hillside above.
This is a view from the lakeside looking back towards the square and a ruin of a castle on the hillside above.I enjoyed a lovely lunch in Civitavecchia with friends today - the temperature was just perfect for dining alfresco, enjoying spaghetti with a tomato sauce; the best pizza I have ever tasted, fresh salad and a lovely slice of lemon cake to finish oozing with a fresh lemon filling........bellissimo!
This was a fantastic port to finish the Round World Cruise on, the ambiance, the people and the Mediterranean Sun all combined to make the perfect day.................Oh what a perfect day.....I feel a song coming on..........
We have four sea days now on our way back to our home port of Southampton. What a voyage of memories this has been and it has been a great privilege to share mine with you. Thank you for all your friendship and messages of appreciation - it makes it all worth while.
Best wishes to Neil Oliver, I pass my 'Bloggers Mantle' to him on the mighty vessel AZURA newly named by Darcey Bussell.
Wishing AZURA well on her maiden Voyage with calm seas, smooth sailing and God speed for her future.
Arrivederci,
James

Many thanks James for all your blogs during this cruise - I have avidly read every one with envy!
Enjoy your leave, and all the best for your continued success on Oceana. Will you blog from her?
I love Bracciano so thanks for those pictures which brought back good memories of a precious holiday with my parents.
Hi James
Once again thank you for a fantastic blog. The list of places I'd like to cruise to has increased dramatically due to the fantastic photos and experiences you've described, but it's also been great to see the pictures around Arcadia and those of the crew, many of whom I've met several times.
It's wetted my appetitie for another P & O cruise and Christmas seems a long time away so I think we'll have to squeeze another one in before then.
Enjoy your well deserved break and hopefully meet up again later in the year.
MORNING JAMES - I'M BACK AND I HOPE I CATCH YOU BEFORE YOU SIGN OFF THE BLOG FOR NOW! (Yes I'm shouting - but with joy)!!!!
Well what can I say. I'm still on cloud 9 - the naming ceremony went by so so quickly. My little sponge didn't manage to soak it all in.
Saw lots of faces that we knew onboard and a great time was had by all (well we enjoyed it, I'm sure everyone else did too).
As always we managed to stand near some rather rude people at the naming ceremony who talked throughout Sir Trevor McDonalds speech and introduction. How comes I always manage to stand/sit in the wrong place ;-0)
Azura is lovely James. It's decor is very nice and IMO more classy than Ventura. I loved the spa area and reckon we'd be better off getting an inside cabin and paying the extra to use those facilities rather than have our own balcony. After all we personally tend to use the cabin for sleeping and dressing only, so does it really matter if we don't have a sea view! I say that but I know when it comes to booking I'm more likely to price up a room with a view ;-0)
Well now back to your last two posts on here. Both have brought back happy memories. The corinth canal we did many many years ago. The kids were quite young and the photos are prints not digital! We actually went along the canal in a little boat (I can't remember what they called it)! Did the Arcadians do this??
And last year Natalie and I did Bracciano. What a lovely tour that is. Natalie has also done a tour when in Civitavecchia to do wine tasting which she also recommends if you don't want to go into Rome.
Well James your stint at blogger command is coming to an end. I am going to miss our little get togethers on here. I know when Justin and Nigel both took over the reigns whilst you were on leave, did a good job, it just wasn't the same! I'll follow Neil's blog too, but will welcome the return of the master blogger!
I hope the BOB is kind to you and that you have a safe journey home. I hope to communicate with you again before you arrive back in Southampton though. I know you've got a few sea days (but I did note that you are going to be busy handing over to Patrick).
TTFN

Hi James
Another brilliant blog, cant wait for you to return on Oceana and start again, i reckon all the regular bloggers will be hanging out for you to get back to sea.
I was reading about the naming ceremony in a Southampton newspaper it will have more of a report in today's edition, so will look very shortly to see what the write up is like.
Enjoy your sea days to Soton, we will certainly miss our daily dose of blog, you put it together so well.
Enjoy your well earned leave, Steve Mitchell is on the Oriana i believe he joined on the 20.3.10.
regards to all on Arcadia, i guess when your back we will also have the world cup to keep most of us going especially if England and for me as well if Australia do well.
Geoff Witts Perth
Hi James - All that remains to be said is a very big thank you for all the fantastic photos of the Grand Voyage, what an excellent job you have done with the daily blogs, I have so looked forward to them, no one does them quite the same as you, but I will follow Neil on Azura its a daily ritual now. Have a good rest and speed back.
Ros
Hello James, I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of your blogs, they have brightened up some cold and murky days at home. I only have 7 weeks to go before sailing on Arcadia and can't wait.
Have a lovely break and hope to catch up with your blogging in the near future.
Safe journey home
xx
Hi James,

Hi James
Thank you so much for taking us on Arcadia's World Cruise, each and every word of your blog makes us feel like we are right there with you, you have brought back many wonderful memories for me of Aurora's Maiden WC, your way with words is like no others, the passengers will probably have mixed feelings as they near the end of the cruise, sorry to leave the friends they have made for the last 3 months but anticipation of coming back home again. The people I met have become really close friends now and although at opposite ends of the country we are often in touch, so the WC not only takes you round the world it is 3 months like no other cruise it is quite life changing.
Good Luck on Oceana
Enjoy your time off
All the Best
Mary G.K.
Hi James,
I've really enjoyed reading your blog of the World Cruise 2010. My in-laws have just completed the Cruise with you so I've got 3 months of their stories to catch up on tomorrow night !
As part of a diary for them is your blog downloadable rather than copying and pasting and saving the pictures ? It will be a lot easier for me !!!!
Again, many thanks for keeping us posted on what the old folks have been up to !
Good luck on your next cruise abd keep on blogging !
All the best, Jason

Hey James, just in case you come on here and have a quick look when you get home (eventually - what with all airports being closed now today), I hope you got home safe and sound and I look forward to you coming back and carrying on where you left off. I'm sure Neil will do you proud in your absence.
Bet your looking forward to some quality R & R??
Have a wonderful leave and speak again soon.

James,
Thank you for letting me have some wonderful memories from the last leg of the world cruise, the photos are brilliant especially the ones of the Suez Canal which we missed as were in Cairo.
Thank you as well for making us so welcome on board and for the gifts in the cabin.
Best of luck with everything, Arcadia will miss you!
