Dunedin - New Zealand

Good Day from the Tasman Sea!

Dunedin was another WOW FACTOR port of call for Arcadia. Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island of NZ and the principal of the region of Otago. In 1865 it became one of the largest cities for the influx on new settlers from Ireland, Italy, France, Germany and China due to the discovery of Gold. It is famous for the outstanding Dunedin Railway Station and the world renowned Taieri Gorge Train. Did you know that Denedin is the old Gaelic name for Edinburgh? Arcadia was berthed in Port Chalmers and it was from here that Captain Robert Scott set out tin the Terra Nova on his ill-fated expedition to the South Pole on 28 November 1910.

The old Railway station is in the Flemish Renaissance style, with a majestic interior – as you can see from my photograph.

You cannot get much closer that this - the train is literally at the bottom of Arcadia's gangway - now that is the red carpet treatment!
The award winning Taieri Gorge Railway takes you on a journey through stunning countryside which can only be seen from the train.

Board this historic train alongside the ship to be taken on a journey through the rugged and spectacular scenery of the Taieri River Gorge. Famous for its sheer cliff faces and sudden ravines which frame the tranquil river the railway line crosses wrought iron viaducts and travels through tunnels carved by hand more than 100 years ago.

Dunedin Railway Station. You could say it is GRAND.......................................

Step on board and enjoy the journey...............

The New Zealand Flag flying proudly above the Railway Station.

On our way.............

All aboard for Australia! Arcadia sails out Sydney bound.

Spot the little light house.........

There were people out on the breakwater to wave us off.

The Pilot boat.

Dan and James take to the Decks to bring you the best shots!

The Pilot boat approaching the ship.

The Great British Sail away was going on down the aft - but even mid ships the rails were lined with passengers for the sail out.

Good Bye - until the next time................the ship's horn was blasting........

I am sitting in my office at 2230, it always a hectic day on the last day of a cruise or a Leg of a Round World Cruise. Meetings in the morning, people to see, emails to read, a huddle with my Team to do a final run through for our two day call at Sydney. It was great for us that the Australian Officials boarded Arcadia at Dunedin and completed a face to face inspection of all passengers over two day which made the whole necessary process effortless. I wish the American Officials would go back to travelling with us prior to arrival it would make life a lot easier. Days like this when you always look back to the beginning and think what would I have done differently if I had it all to do again?!!
Last evening it was fond farewells with my dinner table companions as they are all leaving in Sydney. After Dinner I watched the Headliners Theatre Company in The Palladium ‘True Brit’ – what a show! Then I went Ballroom Dancing in The Globe – much to the surprise of many of our regulars who got a shock to me on the dance floor – all great fun – you see there is so much to do on a cruise! Before retiring I caught up with Marin Green who is the resident pianist in The Piano Bar at the top of the Atrium. Martin has coached and inspired me over the years on the piano.

The highlight of this Leg of the Round World Cruise was to meet up with Claire Sweeney. I first met Claire on the original Sea Princess. Claire joined us for dinner on St Valentine's evening and we enjoyed many a laugh - as you do! Best wishes to Claire as she leaves us at Sydney - haste ye back!

I do hope these blogs on New Zealand have given you a desire to come out and visit!

Landfall Sydney,

James.

Life is a journey.

Really nice photo's James.

Thanks for putting these here so that everyone not fortunate enough to be on a cruise on the ship can see how it is.

Will you now go tell the captain that the ship's bridge cam is not working ?

That is quite annoying......

Hello James

I think Nat called me from that train as I needed to speak to her about something so had text her and asked her to call.

I'm a stupid old fool. I've just got quite upset and I'm not sure about what really. I've loved the photos of New Zealand and as I've said many a time before, I will do a world cruise one day when time allows. I am also slightly worried about Nat coming home - I have a really bad fear of flying that even makes me worried about those nearest and dearest to me flying too.

Love the picture of you and Claire Sweeney. Gosh I can hear her voice in my head now (from either Brookside - which I used to love watching - I still don't know to this day why they stopped it and from 60 minute makeover). I've never been fortunate enough to see her on any of my cruises.

Well James, I hope Natalie hasn't been too much of a handful ;-0) I hope she's ready for the dreadful weather we are having here. Guess what ??? .............. YES, it's snowing again. So I'm housebound at the minute! And I have a very important invite to get in the post!

I think my post cruise blues have kicked in - got to go xx

Fabulous photos.

Glad to hear the captain is still blasting away on his horn. Can you ask if he will do an extra one just for me when we leave HK?. Arcadia has definately turned round now and is on her way to get me, not that I am excited off course.

Well James, what can I say. I've just taken great webcam grabs of your entry into Sydney - The lovely blue sky (although bit worried about the red sky - you know the saying red sky at night shepherds delight, red sky in the morning shepherds warning) - At 6.15am it was 26.2c - Guess there are lots of passengers up nice and early for your sail in. Just sorted out Natalie's flights home. She's all booked in!

Now then James just looking at his photo of you and Claire Sweeney - what a lovely couple you look ;-0) She's a very attractive young lady ;-0)

Keep up the good work with the blog! Looking forward to the Sydney photos. Tell DD to be careful coming home for me. I'm all emotional today I really am not sure what's wrong with me! I think if I were leaving Arcadia tomorrow I'd be this upset, but it's not me that's leaving and it's not me that has worked all the hours god sends 7 days a week for the past 5 and a bit months! I'm sure she's relieved to be coming home for some well earned rest ;-0)

Bye for now

Good Afternoon James,

I was just checking the webcams of P&O Australia and see that you are in Sydney with Pacific Jewel (Ex Ocean Village Two). Hopefully some of the crew can catch up with shipmates from both great ships.

Hope you all are enjoying your time in good old Sydney town, The Rocks is a very pretty area and within walking distance from Circular Quay.Do you know if the Orient Pub is still there? also another famous watering hole was the Paragon not far from Circular Quay railway station if i remember rightly.

Regards to all on Arcadia
