Christmas Island looking exactly the same as when Cook first discovered it on the 24th December 1777, and the sea really is that turquoise blue!

Arcadia's passengers were tendered in with a local Pilot advising our crew as we picked our way over the coral reefs.
Arriving at the Village of London! Christmas Island is quite cosmopolitan as it has other villages named Paris, Poland and Banana (the latter because it used to be a banana growing area).
The Christmas Islanders are very religious and there are several churches of differing denominations scatted over the Island.
The population of Christmas Island is growing and the children are educated in a variety of Infant, Junior and Secondary Schools.
The Island's roads are in good condition mainly because they were build to last by the Engineering Regiments of the British Army who were based here during the H Bomb Tests.
The is a commemorative stone at the entrance to the Captain Cook Hotel which was built on the site of the British Army Camp.
These are the Hotel Rooms. The Hotel is mainly used by fishermen tourists, where they go fishing for Bone Fish and other South sea varieties. We Arcadians had the beach entirely to ourselves until a local resident came out to greet us!
Here he is - a Coral Crab. We tried everything to entice him to leave his shell home but he wasn't having it not even after us having travelled so far to visit him!
Some shade on a hot day on the beach.
Would you believe it ? The British had a Golf Course when they were on the Island which is now somewhat overgrown and unplayable.
These are the official stores owned and operated by the Government.
The Christmas Islanders came out to greet us in their traditional costumes. To their credit they sang and danced from the moment we set foot on the Island to the time the last passenger left.
Would you believe it as Captain Ian Walters said 'we have sailed across an empty Pacific Ocean only to encounter a parking issue at Christmas Island'! However he did park it as close to the Island as he could! - see below!!!!!
This was a unique opportunity to spend a day on an Island in the middle of the Pacific that still remains commercially unspoiled. The people were warm and welcoming.
Best wishes meantime.
James.
Oh! What a snug little Island, a right little, tight little Island!
Thomas Dibdin 1771 - 1841 - born just before the Island was discovered.

Well James. no crowded beaches there.
I think it's lovely to see that it hasn't been commercialised.
The sea is a beautiful colour, along with the sky.
I like the picture of the ocean through the tree trunks! Stunning!
Oh you guys are so lucky to see these places.
Hey James, Tom's been reading the sunday newspapers and he came across this article in the sunday times:-
SWINGERS AT SEA
In another blow to the image of cruising as a genteel pursuit, an American tour operator, Yolo Cruises, has announced a three night swingers cruise for October, aimed at "people who embrace non-monogamous sexual experiences". The cruise, which includes sexually themed shore excursions, a Carnal Cravings Hallowe'en Ball and a naked recuperation day, takes place on a ship chartered from Carnival Cruise Lines, which is clearly better disposed towards swingers than cougars, whom it banned last month. The swingers set sail from Miami on October 29; the cost of an inside cabin is £255pp (yolocruises.com)
Well I nearly choked on my lunch as I was eating when he read it out to me! Now clearly Arcadia, being adult only would lend itself to such an activity type cruise ;-0) What do you think? Something for the future maybe - Lol - sent with a nod and a wink and very much tongue in cheek!

what an amazing island cant quite work out how it would be to live somewhere so isolated. But then i suppose they dont realise they are. fabulous beaches ad see and the people looked lovely. Looking forward to the next bit
What a delight to see somewhere so unspoiled and how interesting to read the history. I'm not sure I would have been enticing the crab out of his home though! LOL
I hope you have fun in Auckland - I'm guessing a pretty big changeover then again.

Hi James
I have just come across your blog. I have had great pleasure in seeing everything as my Mum Christine and my cousin Craig are on the World Cruise. I've spent most of the evening catching up on the Arcadia pictures etc, since setting sail from Southampton.
Looking forward to the pictures from Auckland...

I hope you get better soon. If I'm honest my cold is hanging around. It's not as bad as it was, but I've still got a bit of tickly nose and throat! I am beginning to wonder if it's the start of hay fever ;-0) The seasons are changing surely the hay fever season will change with them??!!
Anyway, James I just wanted to come on here and shout from the roof tops that this Belle is going to the ball. Got my e mail today and apparently my invite is in the post :-0)
