Passengers gather for the Crossing of the Line Ceremony.
Good Day Everyone,
Thank you for all your recent messages it is always great to read these – they make for a bit of diversion from my main role here as Executive Purser of this mighty vessel. Honolulu seems like a lifetime ago now! Christmas Island was something different. After Christmas Island we had two sea days to Apia in Western Samoa.
On the 10th February we enjoyed the Crossing of the Line Ceremony by the Aquarius Pool on the aft deck. Permission was sought for Arcadia to cross the Equator. Word was sent to King Neptune, Ruler of the Seven Seas. A message was received that he will visit Arcadia together with his Aquatic Court to celebrate the crossing of the line. All a bit of old fashioned fun!
Cyclone Rene was doing is best to catch up with Arcadia but we kept on the move. We called at Apia to collect one passenger and two crew members and also disembark two crew members. Originally this was to be completed by boat however on the day this could not be done. Therefore Captain Walters took the ship alongside in the wind and the rain and our local Agent and Officials boarding the ship. It took almost an hour to complete the formalities and then we were on our way. Captain Walters was very busy on the Bridge as you can imagine therefore I made two broadcasts to our passengers keeping them up to date with what was going on. Our embarking passenger was Claire Sweeney who packed out The Palladium Theatre on the same evening! It is always disappointing to have to miss a port of call however the weather dictates and we cannot control the weather.
Saturday the 13th February was 'the day that never was', as we had crossed the International Date Line. St Valentine’s Day was a buzz around the ship with lots going on. One day we were GMT -12 hours and the next we were GMT +13!
I have also been hosting at the two Round World Cruise Luncheons and the second of our PORTUNUS Gold Tier Lunches - I really do need to get back to the Gym! ‘Choirs at Sea’ performed this afternoon in The Palladium Theatre to a packed house. There were 90 passengers in the Choir and they were absolutely brilliant – such talent on board this ship.

We are now on out sixth Sea Day! Needless to say that we are all looking forward to visiting Auckland tomorrow where we are due alongside at 0700. After all the lively seas we have been sailing today was a spectacular day – the sea has been like a mill pond and as I am sitting here typing there is the most awesome sunset taking place. Can’t believe we are in New Zealand waters – seems just a moment ago I was lunching in Barbados! That was the 20th January! Never a dull moment here.
Hope this finds you all well and I will have some good photos from our New Zealand calls at Auckland, Lyttelton, Christchurch, and Dunedin. I have been to all these places before and they are well worth a visit – if you have not been then you need to plan to go. Auckland is known as the City of Sails'. I once joined the old Sea Princess in Auckland on New Year's Eve for a handover. I was home for Christmas but never really enjoyed it as I knew I had to pack up and fly to New Zealand - you can't go much further to work than this! I have also enjoyed holidays in New Zealand both in the North and South Islands. So much wonderful scenery.

On Tuesday the 23rd February we will sail into Sydney Harbour and berth at Circular Quay, opposite the Sydney Opera House. One of the most magnificent arrivals in the WORLD.
Best wishes,
James.
Arcadia at Apia. By getting away early from Apia Arcadia was able to get ahead of the Cyclone path.
Two New Zealand Immigration Officers joined us at Apia. One had been staying with family for a few days and he spent his time assisting them to board up their house in preparation for Rene.
As you can see the effects of Cyclone Rene were evident.
The Meridian Restaurant Manager Jan Bacon checking that the scene is set for our Valentine's Evening Dinner.
It does not all happen by magic. Head Waiter Lola is giving a briefing to his team on this evening's menu.
Sanjog our Head Wine Steward gives his briefing to The Meridian Restaurant Wine Stewards.
The Dream Team - Executive Chef Trevor Connolly and Restaurant Manager Jan Bacon.
Together they wash pots, pans, china and glass for 12,000 meals a day in the numerous plate houses and pot washes around Arcadia. They also have a night cleaning team for Arcadia's Galley which have millions of pounds of stainless steel.
Steve Mann, Senior Purser - Food and Beverage Manager at the Food and Beverage morning meeting.
It is amazing what our Ice Carver can do.
Meantime 'down below' in the Technical Stores, Lee Rutherford our Ventilation Officer sorts out some business with Peter May our Technical Storekeeper. You would be amazed at the thousands of nuts and bolts that are needed to keep Arcadia ship shape.
Behind the fine woven carpets and the splendour of our Public Rooms there are working alleyways which are a hive of activity 24 hours a day.
The Photographers had fun!
Cruise Director Sally Sagoe and her Entertainment Officers at the sail away from Christmas Island.
No funny business going on here!
I hope you had a lovely St Valentine's Day wherever you are. Claire Sweeney joined me for Dinner in the Meridian Restaurant and then we went to see the Headliners Theatre Company in The Palladium Theatre where they were performing the show BIG PICTURE. This show celebrates 80 years of the Oscars and you have guessed the opening number - 'There's no place like Hollywood'! I felt as if I WAS at the OSCARS!

Wherever you are - wishing you a good day,
Bye for now,
James.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Hi James,
Well another great blog read with pictures to go with it, That cyclone is still hanging around Samoa.
Enjoy Auckland Tomorrow, looking forward to more updates, have not been able to view your webcam as it says sorry out of satellite range.
Now if i had been on Arcadia i would still be the same age,as i would have skipped my birthday, so would have to wait until next year to get another year older. Wish i could do that every so often i could stay forever young.
Just heard about the British couple who won 56 million pounds in the Euro lottery, if that was me i would be joying you in Sydney.
Regards to all on Arcadia

Hello James
Well it's cold wet and windy here.
The weather in Apia doesn't look like much fun either ;-0)
There have been lots of lunches - not good for the waistline!
Someone has been posting the events of the 13th Feb for us all to see on the new community site. Mind you as of 9am Tues 16th, I am not a registered user according to the site. Even though it's the same details I've used since 2002 (password changes excepted)! Yet another problem with the site I think. I keep saying patience is a virtue, but I think my patience is now being tested ;-0)
N said she went to see Claire Sweeney perform the other evening and said how good she was. I've looked at the webcam (which is now up to date again) and I saw your lovely sunset!
Enjoy New Zealand. Have you got any passengers onboard from the fated Aurora world cruise last year who missed a lot of those ports of call last year and are looking forward to finally getting there this year?
Well the weather here is grim! Off to Bristol for a few days tomorrow. Going to visit a friend who now lives in Somerset.
I shall take my laptop to keep up to date here!
Bye for now. Have a lovely evening (still getting used to you guys now being 12 hours ahead rather than behind)!
Elaine (aurorabore)
PS, did you see my message on the christmas island blog about my invite to the naming ceremony arriving - I'm grinning from ear to ear! As you can imagine. ;-0)
Happy Birthday Geoff!
Hope it was a good one!
Arcadia running away from cyclones and Aurora dodging ice in China, how fantastic. We were in China a month or so later last year on Arcadia, don't think there was ice in the sea but there sure was in the little rivers and dams on the way to the Great Wall.
We were lucky enough to be on Arcadia last year on the Grand Voyage from Bris. to Southampton and loved our equator crossing.
Fantastic memories.
Only 12 more sleeps till we leave on Aurora looking forward to the half Grand Voyage and can't wait to jump on board. We will be in Freo on the 11th March.Heading off for a big WA seafood lunch.
Best Wishes
Abi.
Hi Elaine,
Congrats on the invitation!
We too have wet and windy weather here in SE Queensland, not cold though, around 29 degrees C at the moment, 7.17pm, Tues. 16th, and has been 100% humidity all day, dripping hot with huge rainfall and flash flooding every where.
All good, we are quite used to it.
Abi.
DJ Martin looks good as Santa!
Geoff I missed your birthday ;-0) So belated birthday wishes to you.
Abi, many thanks. I feel really honoured.
I do hate the winter time here. I'm not a winter person at all and I think I do suffer with SAD (seasonal affective disorder). I am really looking forward to the next couple of months and the spring arriving.
They forecast snow again overnight! We've had quite a lot of snow this year (but thankfully I missed most of it over christmas)!
Have a nice day all. Cleaning and gym for me today - Now where's Gerry (my cabin steward at Xmas) when you need him!!!!!
Elaine (aurorabore)
Hi James,
This time next year my wife and i will be on Artemis heading towards Xingang, where we arrive on the 17th of Feb. Hopefully not much ice around.
Hi Abi,
Thanks for the wishes, our elder son who works in Broome, his bosses wife and daughter joined Arcadia in Brisbane last year and sailed all the way back to Southampton.
We are expecting more hot weather in the next couple of days, with the chance of a thundery shower on Fri or Sat.Today has been quite good about 31c, but it feels quite humid outside at the moment, it is the humidity that is the real energy sapper.
Regards
Geoff
Ps
HI Elaine thanks also for the wishes.
i have so much going on at home sometimes i don't know if i'm Arthur or Martha.I am having to look after the kids, run the house, and work aswell as i had to send my wife overseas at short notice the other week so it is all go in our household at the moment.
Take care and congrats on your invite.
Geoff
Afternoon James, thank you for your effort in keeping us all updated. The pictures are really amazing - we are watching daily, my parents are on the Arcadia, for the trip of a life time! It's also my Dad's birthday tomorrow, 18/02 if you could direct whomever to make a fuss of him, his name is Joh Warrens. Not too much cake - He is diabetic! Many thanks and keep the news flowing. Kind regards Jean-Paul Warrens.
Another great set of pics.
I remember the enormous fun, tradition and excitement we all felt when we crossed the line a few years back - could it really have been 7 years ago - on the old Arcadia. We stood for hours watching Neptune & co around the pool. And Valentine's Day too - I expect the on board florist did a roaring trade then!
I have started my packing now - only those things that will sit as well in a case as a drawer, but it's terribly exciting to be "getting ready". Knowing Sydney is only just around the corner for you is bitter sweet, as originally we had booked to join then. But family circumstances made us decide 8 weeks was too long to be away. Maybe next year we'll get "down under"
Enjoy Auckland and the rest of New Zealand. my uncle was a Methodist Minister in Dunedin so I would love to see some of the country.
Gill
Elaine, How lovely your going to the Naming day. I hope you will tell us all about it on the CC.
Abi. See you on board, we have 27 sleeps to go perhaps you could wear a red carnation.
James sorry to hijack your blog but the community site is so difficult these days, this is the only way to communicate! but thanks for your pics once again, how many times have you crossed the date line, you must be years younger!!
Regards to all Judith
Hi James
another "stunner" of a blog, many thanks. Glad to see Claire is warming up on Arcadia ready for us on the Maiden of Azura.
regards
Ray & Sue
Looks misty in Auckland this morning, can't believe that Arcadia is already there.
Hi Jay, will keep an eye out for you.
As far as I know there are two other couples getting on in Bris that were on Arcadia last year. I may recognise them when we get on.
11 more sleeps to go!
Abi
Just looked at the webcam it looks as if Arcadia is berthed right in the town !! Bit misty but oh! how I wish we were there I could put up with a bit of mist its probably only a heat haze!!
Ros
Hi James,
Just watching you sail away from Auckland, hope it was good for all on board, i believe you had a few passengers joining you, lucky them.
Enjoy Christchurch, a place we never went to when i was at sea, we used to do Auckland, and the Bay of Islands which is beautiful. In-fact in the Bay is where i ate some of the best Fish and Chips outside of the UK. There was also a restaurant or bar if i remember rightly called Arcadia in the Bay
Looking forward to the photo's to come.
Regards to all on Arcadia.
