Panama and more

Arcadia leaving the Pedro Miguel Locks.

Good Day Everyone,

Hope this finds you well and thank you for all your messages and thoughts on the Panama Canal. Thanks also for sending me photographs from the web cams etc - your thoughtfulness is appreciated.

We celebrated Burns Night in style with the traditional and time honoured piping of the Haggis. We raised a glass to all our Scottish friends! Hope you are reading this blog today Mary! Today was Australia Day so the Australians had all their celebrations - everyday is a celebration of some sort or other on Arcadia! I was wondering where the 'Grey nomads' had got to - so it was good to get your message the other day - today we will raise a glass to all our Australian friends - and to all the Cusicks in Perth WA.

The weather remains fabulous and tomorrow we are in Acapulco.

My thanks to David Shepherd, Executive Purser on board Oriana for sending me these photographs of Arcadia. I loved them so much I thought I would share them with you. I know this is the third blog on the Panama Canal however this is it! Enjoy.........

Taken from Oriana's Bridge.

Arcadia in the Pedro Miguel Locks.

Arcadia was excited to sailing towards the Pacific Ocean. The last time she was here was in early 2008 on her fly cruising season, with turnaround in Barbados, New Orleans and Acapulco. We did these for the first three winter years of Arcadia's life. I so enjoyed all that fly cruising.

Our sister ship Oceana is now on a similar itinerary if you fancy a fly cruise holiday to this area.

Commodore Burgoine keeping an ever watchful eye from the Bridge.

Soph keeps an eye from above........what a fine looking vessel in the background.

Simon - Senior First Office making sure all is well on the aft.

Pure JOY and EXCITEMENT was the order of the day - memories that will last a lifetime and be talked about over many a dinner table - 'do you remember when we were in the canal with both ships on the Arcadia Inaugural Round World Cruise 2010?' - ' I was there' - 'Yes so was I' and do you recall.....................and so the story goes...........getting enhanced more with every telling. Many people have been talking about the time in 2001 when AURORA and VICTORIA met up in the Canal - Commodore Burgoine was the Master of AURORA at that time.

Sending greetings to shipmates across the locks.

A friendly wave from a Panamanian.

This evening I went for a walk around the decks at 1800 hours - this was the view from the aft end by the Aquarius Pool. Sea days - good for relaxing.

One or two in the Sports Nets..........

A game of shuffleboard..........

A beautiful sky and the P&O Cruises 'buff' Funnel - known the WORLD over and for many the only way to travel. I met a lovely lady from Perth WA today who is aged 96 and has never travelled any other line - I don't expect she will change now - she has already booked for Aurora next year. I would have said she was in her 70's - the secret she said was not to do too much work and to enjoy life - every day!

Her course charted, Arcadia heading towards sun down.

On my way through The Spa I had a catch up with ladies on Reception.

L to R - Gina, Reeba, Nunto and Nicole.

Arcadia's Spa is one of the largest in the P&O Cruises Fleet and has a staff of 18.

And finally,

At noon on December 31,1999 Panama assumed full responsibility for the administration, operation, and maintenance of the Panama Canal. A government institution by the name of Panama Canal Authority (ACP). The ACP is in charge of the operation, administration, management, preservation, maintenance, improvement and modernisation of the Canal, as well as its activities and related services.

Until the next time,

Bye for now,

James.

James: Please keep the Panama Canal photos coming! I'm enjoying them very much, and Arcadia and Oriana both look good. I wish I was on board....

Also, have a look here ( http://tomtotley.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/po-ships-in-the-panama-canal/ ) for some photos of Arcadia & Oriana grabbed from the Canal's own cameras, plus links to more.

Hi James

The only word that springs to mind is WOW. the pictures are brilliant, what an experience to have two great P&O liners side by side in the great Panama Canal.
You are a great ambassador for P&O cruises i hope they recognize that fact.

Is Steve Mitchell on the Oriana already or do you know if he joins at a later date. Also is Chris Bullen still on the Aurora.

Enjoy your time in Acapulco, nice to hear that everyone is having a wonderful time, mind you it is hard not to on a cruise.

Wonderful pictures - well done to everyone who makes the criuse, the ship, photographs, smooth passage great food, wonderful relaxation and 'The Blog' a fascianating and interetsing way to spend a few minutes, a morning or an entire World Cruise whether on board or not!

Just listening to the dustbin men emptying the bins whilst the animals are 'mucked out' on the farm next door before I do the final on-line submission of my tax return on this cold wintery morning in the UK........what a contrast!

Love to you James, from 'M'...and 'James' xxxx

Those pictures of Arcadia are fab. In my view, and I know not everyone will agree, Arcadia is the nicest looking ship in the fleet. They are certainly great shots.

I love those early evening walkabouts, when the air is soft and balmy and the sun just starting to dip below the horizon - magical.

Thanks for keeping us involved.

That just all looks so exciting, wish we were there.
When we transitted the canal on Island Princess in Jan 2008 the cruise ship Van Gogh went through beside us and we thought that that was exciting there was lots of yelling and cheering between boats, there were even three very loud Aussies on Van Gogh that were yelling Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, of course we had to Oi,Oi,Oi back, we weren't very loud though as there were only two of us on a ship full of Americans.
Wish you all much more excitement before the end of the World Voyage.

Another wonderful blog entry James.

I have to agree with Gill D - Arcadia is a lovely looking ship.

I can even see my cabin from some of those photos :-)

I am getting really excited just looking at the photos of your trip through the canal. I am sure it must be even more thrilling if you are actually there.

Just looking at your photos of the spa girls. Whilst onboard I had a treatment by Gina, lovely young lady and she always has that lovely flower in her hair. Reeba - who DD recommends for a haircut & blow dry, did my hair and make up for my ROV's.

It's great to see the staff waving to friends and family on Oriana. It's surely a very rare opportunity that both P & O ships go through the locks together?

Well back to reality here. It's a grey cold morning here in the home counties. There was snow on the weather forecast map this morning :-0) Thankfully not round here, but certainly along the East coast.

Well have another lovely day James. Another port of call today. I look forward to seeing the photos of both Acapulco and your port of call today.

Take care

Elaine (aurorabore)

Hi James, we were on Arcadia last year on the Singapore/Southampton leg of the Grand Cruise and follow your blog with interest. The item about the lady who is 96 and has booked a cruise for next year already is interesting. I suppose at that age she has little peer pressure to stop her booking future cruises!

OMG How fantastic!
Wish that someone would do a blog or at least a cruise report from Aurora.
We just keep hearing about the new strain of Noro Virus that is on the ship. A bit scarey really, had Noro last year on Arcadia, well 4 hrs after we disembarked in Southampton anyway, and was not nice.Don't want it this year on Aurora.

James, this blog of yours is getting better and better, with excellent pics and interesting info.
Please forgive me for addressing this to Abi!
Hi Abi (Anonymous),I too would like to hear how they are getting on on Aurora and have heard only about the NV outbreak. I did not know it was a new strain. Perhaps James knows something about it??? Or perhaps Nigel can through some light, as he will be joining Aurora later.

Regards to all Judith
