Remembrance Sunday - At Sea.

8th November 2009.

Dear Readers, today is Remembrance Sunday, so at 10.00am this morning in the Theatre Royal, Captain Julian Burgess will be conducting a Remembrance Sunday Service. This is a tradition that happens every year on our P&O Cruise Ships wherever they are in the world. We have had 600 service sheets printed and from experience we know that we will use all of these.
Our Musical Director Nick Stewart, will provide the musical accompaniment and The Last Post and The Reveille will be played by Neil Doherty from our orchestra. I have the honour of reading the lesson which is Apocrypha – Ecclesiasticus Chapter 44, verses 1 -14.

A few days ago on our way to Istanbul and then returning from it, we sailed by the Gallipoli peninsular, which gives the service this morning an even more poignant feel. I am sure there are passengers onboard who had relatives who were involved in this campaign of the First World War.

I have read the lesson at the Remembrance Sunday Service many times now and even though it is an honour to do it, I still get very nervous beforehand. I get nervous because the service means a great deal to so many of our passengers and I do not want to let them down.
One of our Headliners Theatre Company Dancers, Rachel Davies has her grandparents, Squadron Leader J.A.M Davies MBE and Mrs Eileen Davies travelling this cruise. Squadron Leader Davies served in the RAF for 34 years from 1939 to 1973. He was in 44, 97 and 106 Squadrons during the Second World War, and he flew in over 40 bombing missions during this time. Squadron Leader J.A.M Davies MBE and Mrs Eileen Davies will be at the service this morning.

I look forward to writing more tomorrow from Palermo Sicily.

Today I watched the Rememberance Service on TV. Today my husband and his fellow members interupted their game and stood on the tennis court for two minutes in silence. Today a Service was held on all P & O cruise ships. We do not forget and yet we do not learn. Young men are dying every day now in Afganistan. It is so sad. J

The couple in the photo there with their granddaughter are on my in-laws dining table. They told us about them the other day. Its a great dining room table to be on by all accounts :-)
Just wish I was there with them.

I echo your sentiments in your post above. Today there are more young men coming home from Afghanistan to be laid to rest.

I think remembrance Sunday has more of a link with younger people (rather than those that remember the 1st and 2nd world wars) in today's society because of the losses in the likes of Iraq and Afghanistan.
