Piraeus, Athens - Greece

3rd November 2009

Hello from the second Greek port this cruise, Piraeus. It is the port for Athens and is always full of ferries that service all the numerous islands in the Aegean Sea and even as far away as Corfu, Crete and Cyprus.

Today I am going to tell you all about our three Cadets on board, we have one of each, Deck, Engine and Hotel!

The lady first – the Hotel Cadet is Barbara Baber who is 23 years old and has a BSc in Cruise Operations Management from Plymouth University. She is at present gaining experience in all aspects of the food and beverage operations on board.

Next is the Engine or Technical Cadet, Euan Miller, he is 19 years old and in his 4th phase of training. He has spent 6 months at Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, 3 months on Queen Mary 2, 10 months back at the GCNS and now is on Oriana for 3 months. He next goes to Arcadia for a contract, then back to the GCNS for a further 3 months!

Last but not least, is 20 year old Jamie McInnes who is our Deck Cadet; Jamie was at Warsach Maritime Academy in Southampton for six weeks before being sent to Oceana for a 4 month contract. He then went back to Warsach for 3 months before joining the Star Princess for a 4 month contract, he was then back again at Warsach for 6 months before joining Oriana on the 17th August this year. He leaves Oriana on the 18th December before going back to Warsach for a further 6 months next year! He will then take an oral examination for Officer of the Watch Certificate of competency.

All of these three young people's families must be very proud of them, I know I would be if I was one of their parents.

As you can now see to become a P&O Cruises Officer it takes years of training both ashore and on board!

Our main entertainment features tonight are cabaret with the ‘Magic and Illusion of Matthew McGurk’ in the Theatre Royal and a Tropical Party Night, (weather permitting) at our Riviera Pool Area.

I took this shot just outside my office on Oriana in front of the map of the world deliberately.

Left to right Deck Cadet Jamie McInnes, Hotel Cadet Barbara Baber and Engine/Technical Cadet Euan Miller.

The ‘World Is Their Oyster’. Jamie in time could become a Captain, Barbara an Executive Purser and Euan a Chief Engineer.

Bye for now

Nigel

Best of luck to them........if I could start again, I'd want to be one of them!

I sailed into Athens last week, but had to fly straight home. Could just see the Acropolis in the very far distance....I so wanted to stay and see it all. There is so much to see in Athens
