Palermo - Sicily

Star Turns!

9th November 2009

Buongiorno from Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean. Palermo is a splendid city. It is the capital of Sicily and the tours offered to the passengers here are superb. If I had the time I would love to go on them! I will however try to get off for a walk later on today for an hour or so - I think you realise by now I love Italy!

Tonight in the Theatre Royal we are proud to present stand up comedian Adrian Walsh. Adrian is a firm favourite with our passengers and has made over 300 radio and television appearances. He has appeared alongside great entertainers such as Shirley Bassey, Barry Manilow and Petula Clark to name just a few. He is the ninth cabaret act to be performing for our passengers so far this cruise.

Whilst we are on the subject of entertainers, let me tell you about another couple of them we have onboard, first of all Iris Williams OBE. Iris has been entertaining our passengers on and off for the last ten years. When she is not working on our ships she could be working just about anywhere in the world, including other cruise lines such as Cunard or Holland America. Iris studied at the prestigious Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has had a long and varied career, including her own BBC TV Series and several Royal Variety Performances. She was awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours List of 2004. Iris is proud of her Welsh roots but these days lives in New York.

Iris always travels with her Musical Director Peter Day and his CV is extensive to say the least; he has been MD for Tommy Steel, Cilla Black, and has worked as a Musical Director everywhere from Las Vegas to Monte Carlo!

We also have British Actor, Frazer Hines, onboard as a Celebrity Guest Speaker. Frazer is best known for his roles as Jamie McCrimmon in Doctor Who and Joe Sugden in Emmerdale Farm. Frazer has been acting since the age of eight and when he was thirteen he appeared in Charlie Chaplin’s, ‘A King in New York’! Frazer is an actor of repute but could well have been a comedian; he is a very funny guy!

Myself, Frazer Hines, Iris Williams and Peter Day on 8th November in Andersons Bar.

Tomorrow I will be back with a blog about the Managing Director of P&O Cruises, Carol Marlow, who is travelling with us for a few days.

Ciao

Nigel
