Mytilene - Greece

6th November 2009

Hello, (Kalimera), once again! Mytilene is on the Greek island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, it is a bustling town and port. The word ‘lesbian’ was coined on this island. There are some major attractions within walking distance of the ship, a Genoese Fortress, Archaeological Museum, Byzantine Art Museum and an Ancient Theatre.

The Love Boat!

My wife Mandy and I first met on the P&O Cruises Sea Princess in 1982, it’s quite a story!

Before we met, Mandy and her Mum and Dad were booked to cruise on the P&O Liner Canberra, (that was in August 1982), but Canberra was requisitioned by the UK Government to be a troop ship during the Falklands War. All passengers booked on Canberra were offered alternative cruises by the company and Mandy and her Mum and Dad decided to take a Mediterranean Cruise on Sea Princess. In August of 1982 I was an Entertainment Officer on Sea Princess and the very day they walked up the gangway I was on ‘meet and greet’ duty at the top! Shall we just say ‘the rest is history’ and we have been together ever since.

The bottom line of this story is if there had not been a Falklands War, our paths may never have crossed as Mandy and her Mum and Dad would have cruised on Canberra and I would have been on Sea Princess; fate must have played a part in this meeting.

After seeing Mandy on my gangway duty in Southampton she sought me out a couple of days later in the ship’s night club and I asked her out in the next port of call Ibiza. In fact our first date was on a P&O Cruises evening tour to a BBQ – we still have photographic evidence of the date on our wall at home! After her cruise was over, we saw each other on my next leave and on every leave I have ever had since 1982!!!

Captain Julian Burgess with the Headliners Theatre Company and members of the Nick Stewart Orchestra in the Theatre Royal at the 4.15pm rehearsal for the Production Show, ‘At the Hop’ on 1st November. Captain Burgess had come in to rehearsals to thank everyone for a Crew Show which the members of the Headliners Theatre Company had produced, choreographed and staged for the Ship’s Company on 30th October. The show included many members of the ship’s company from all the different departments on board.

Be back tomorrow from Heraklion Crete.

Bye for now.

Nigel
