Onwards and Upwards in the Baltic.

James, Gary Rhodes and Mike Monohan - Culinary Manager.

Hello Everyone,

Seems ages since my last blog! Hope this finds you well.

We had a good Sunday in Southampton at Ocean Terminal. I did not have too many meetings this time therefore once our passengers disembarked I was able to get out and take a tour of the ship to see what all our contractors and staff were up to. It is incredible the amount of work that takes place from arrival at 0700 hours until Noon when we start embarkation. Lots of carpet and upholstery cleaning going on, and Sandy’s Scrubbers were here renewing the anti slip coating on the Belvedere Food Court marble floor.

It was a pleasant sail away down the Solent with a noticeable cooler air than we have been used to – autumn is on the way!

The North Sea was well behaved. Monday was overcast which did not detract from a very full on day aboard Arcadia. This being a Baltic Cruise the Shore Excursions Team are in big demand. Celebrity Chef Gary Rhodes hosted a morning cookery demonstration in The Palladium Theatre to a full house, and then did an afternoon book signing and photography session in The Crows Nest. Gary is not too fond of the motion of the ocean but we had no need to worry! There is always an extra buzz around when Gary is here – he is so good at speaking to our passengers and visiting all the tables in his Arcadian Rhodes Restaurant. Gary Rhodes and his wife Jenny are very much ‘at home’ on board Arcadia. Arcadian Rhodes was a first for Gary Rhodes at sea. Arcadia was launched in April 2005. Did you know that Arcadian Rhodes was the first ‘fine dining’ restaurant for P&O Cruises? Gray Rhodes is now off to film another TV series in Italy. You know I love Italy!!

I called my friend Elma who was on the last Baltic Cruise with us and where was she?..................Lucca of all places enjoying shopping in the Italian sun............! Last evening I was a guest in Arcadian Rhodes and enjoyed another delicious meal in superb surroundings – how can I diet?.....I have all of Gary’s cook books at home nicely on display in my country kitchen, they are a great to leaf over with a nice cup of coffee even if one has no intention of getting the pots and pans out! .....

For more information visit –
http://www.garyrhodes.com/

I was glad that the sea was calm as it made for a most enjoyable Commodore’s Welcome on Board reception. I met many regular passengers and also a lot of new to cruising people who are very excited to be on board and sailing to all these wonderful ports of call. This cruise we will be visiting Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersburg overnight, Tallinn, Oslo and Kristiansand.

On Tuesday we arrived in Copenhagen and the sun came out to welcome us! Passengers came back raving about their day as the weather was much better than had been forecast.

Today we are in the Baltic Sea and the sun is shining on Arcadia. I had hoped to post a blog earlier however the Internet was intermittent preventing me from doing so.

Jan Leeming is on board and she also writes a blog. You can visit her website here –
http://www.jan-leeming.com/

I had a quick look at Jan’s blog today and she said she was going to post some photographs of her cruise as time permits.

Thanks for reading! Keep your messages coming and do forgive me if I do not answer them all.

Bye for now,
James.

The longer the grind the finer the flour.

The Ocean Terminal - a hive of activity.

It was great to see Marlyn - we first met at Harland and Wolf in Belfast when the Star Princess was being re branded to Arcadia - the ship that is now Ocean Village. Many a laugh we had to meet the deadline for delivery. Marlyn is the right hand woman at Sandy's Scrubbers.

Paul one of our contractors from Harris Pye is rehanging the sun blinds in The Belevedere Food Court. I am very fussy about Drapes, I can spot a curtain hook out a mile away. When I am off the ship I can't help but notice this whenever I am in other hotels and restaurants.

Meet Sandy herself! Sandy is the boss of Sandy's Scrubbers pictured here with her daughter. I first met Sandy when we launched the Oriana in 1995. We had terrible trouble with the green decking in the main working alleyway of the ship and Sandy came to the rescue - Sandy has been to the rescue many times since and it is always a joy to see her and her team.

The groceries are here..................

One of many little jobs that have to be done - the RNLI Gentlemen empty our donation boxes for a most worthy cause. Thank you - this is all voluntary work.

Meet Emma Harding and Charmaine Morris from our Marketing team. Charmaine is my 'blog buddy' in the Office. Hello to Elliott Pritchard who would love to be here! Elliott is also a great help to me with this blog. Whenever I get stuck it is Elliott I call.

Gary Rhodes live in The Palladium Theatre with a cook set that was specially built for Arcadia for this very purpose. Also in the picture is Matt who is the current Chef in Arcadian Rhodes doing a fine job.

Sam and Belinda in the picture to say farewell to Gary Rhodes in Copenhagen.
L to R - Matt, Sam,Gary, Belinda,Mike.

Arcadia alongside in Copenhagen.

L to R James, Tours Agent Nick, Mo Harrison -Shore Excursions Manager and Bob Ward, Security Officer.

This is as far as I got in Copenhagen - the shops on the dock!

Anyone on the Bridge? See the lovely blue skies in Copenhagen.

Not even an air to lift the Commodore's Burgee!

The leading lights! Arcadia's Crew Club Committee - Key Team Players!
L to R James, David, Rina,Clifford, Deepak and Kevin.

We had a Crew Club Meeting today and after the official business and minute taking we like to go on a walkabout and visit any 'project' we have on the go. Much more fun than sitting in an office.

Celebrating Success! We inspect the new layout in the Crew Quiet Room and the new book shelves. Clifford and David are going on leave on the 20th September. Over the past 7 months we have achieved great things with the Crew Club on board Arcadia.

Gday James

Another set of great photo's. There is always so much to do on turn around day that the whole ship is a buzz with the comings and goings on.

It is remarkable that they turn the ship around in such a short time, hats off to the hard workers that achieve this with the minimum of fuss.

Glad the weather is kind to you. Just looked at Aurora she is in Newport, Rhode island, the weather looks okay where she is. Enjoy your day at sea today.

Hi to all on Arcadia.

I hope that P&O do consider the Transatlantic cruise for Arcadia Elaine it would be nice.

Regards Geoff and Julieta Witts Perth.

Oh lovely weather in Copenhagen. However, I must report, after moaning so much about our weather, that it is a beautiful day here in Cheltenham and our tennis was great today!
Have a good trip. Regards to all, Jay

PS We became grandparents, for the second time, 10 days ago. Little boy Charlie Joshua.

Hi Jay,
Congratuations! Such JOY when a new baby arrives - all the hopes and dreams for the future. Wishing Charlie Joshua a long and happy life. Great names - did you pick these? My middle name is Charles!
James

Geoff and Julieta,
You are web cam buffs! How I wish I was driving through Margaret River in a sports car with the hood down.......I love WA & my cousin lives in Perth. If you were not so far away I would live in Oz.
James.

Steve - don't worry about the weather as we cannot change it! Just come on board and enjoy the ship - we can only change our attitude towards it......your ARCADIA awaits!!!
James.

Morning James

I love seeing your photos in your blog. Gary Rhodes was on a cruise I was on in May on Oriana. Brought one of his cookbooks for my son who loves cooking - unlike me who abosolutely hates everyday cooking - it's so boring!! Now give me a dinner party and I'm in my element! We have company this weekend and my son is going to made me a pimms jelly and crunchie semi freddo! And he'll do it so quick, whereas I do it in hours and make so much mess - well that's my excuse anyway!

Anyway, looks like you have had a lovely day in Copenhagen. Look at the beautiful blue sky. Weather has been very nice here for a few days now. Today I have to mow the garden! Lets hope the sun is still shining later on when I get out there ;-)

Looking forward to seeing more from your baltic trip to bring me happy memories of June!

Off to check out your links!

Have a lovely day in Stockholm.

Hello James,

Glad to see that Tesco delivers right to the quayside!

Good to see the "behind the scenes" work that goes on - I have been doing a bit of "scrubbing" myself (as you do!) as we are expecting guests ourselves this weekend in sunny Italy (not as many as on Arcadia thankfully). Yes James, even "M" does without a "little treasure" some of the time. "007" is getting in the supplies of wine as unfortunately Tesco does not deliver up here in the mountains - more's the pity.

We will watch you progress - enjoy and safe travelling to all.

Louise & Tony. x

Hi Elaine,
Sounds Yummy! Are you able to put the recipe for that Pimms Jelly and Crunchie semi Freddo on this blog?
S'pose we should ask James if that is ok. It's desert time here at home and am now off to see what I can find to munch on after reading your comment. We really should find out what the crew do on these ships to stop the sea air from shrinking their uniforms!Hopefully it is in spray on form.

Pimms jelly looks delicious setting in the fridge. I'm sadly disappointed though he hasn't done any tasters ;-(

Will anyone continue this blog when I go on leave? Not quite sure - we are working on it......watch this space.!

Hi Elaine - you are like me - everyday cooking is a chore but give me a dinner party or a Sunday lunch and I am in my element! My sister always says James - you just can't set up your dining rooom without a GALA Menu! The silver demands it!. Anyhow post recipes if you wish - this blog is all about the JOY of sharing.......

James.

Over to Italy now to Louise AKA M!
Well I just can't believe that you do housework with those smooth hands designed for diamond display! I expect your room maids are 'specail agents'? Hope it is not too cold up the mountain at your secret location! Tell Tony to watch his back with all that shopping....

Ciao
James

Morning James

Do you go on leave on the 20th September as scheduled? Do you go on holiday whilst your on leave or do you spend it at home catching up with family and friends? DD is making the most of her friends and family before joining you on the 20th September. She's excited and anxious all at the same time. She has never been on Arcadia before (although we have). She has been told that she has to do ship visits on turnaround days and is worried because she doesn't know her way around Arcadia (she has been on Oriana for over a year now and knows it very well anyway as she has been a passenger on her several times the same as aurora)!

Thanks for allowin me to post the recipes James. I'll try and get the recipes off my son! He doesn't have them written down! All I know is they usually taste so good and they are not good for the waistline. If I'm not careful I won't get into my evening dresses for the xmas cruise! Mind you I also need to avoid certain aisles in the supermarkets too to help me. Fruit only to snack on from now on. I've got 14 weeks to lose some weight!

Good Morning Elaine,

I am going on leave on the 20th. I have two lives - one on board and one at home and they are both great. Is your DD NB? I have heard great reports and I am looking forward to meeting NB. Tell NB not to worry as she is joining a great ship.

Have a good day,
James at Helsinki - sun still shining on us all.

Love reading the blog James as it makes me feel like I am back on board again, nice photo's too, I hope the weather was nice for your sailing into Stockholm yesterday as its a nice sail in, and a beautiful city, especially love wandering through Gamla Stan, the Vasa museum is worth a visit too, just amazing. I bet you are looking forward to Tallin also, another lovely port of call, infact all of the Baltic Itinerary is brilliant, wish we had done a back to back now, that would have been marvellous, the Med followed by the Baltic, must remember that for the future ha ha.

Enjoy your time off James.

Cheers

Good evening James. OH has been out and brought a new sound system to go with his new telly! It's taken him all night to sort it out and the air in the kitchen is decidedly frosty! So I've come on here until I can finish my clearing down! My DD most certainly is NB. I do hope it's all good that you've heard about her?!!

Well she is planning on being down in Southampton for 8am. Her father and I are bringing her down to help unload her luggage etc and then bring some suitcases back home with us! I believe one of the other girls has put in for some passes for us! I think she's got all our info so that when we arrive on Sunday there should be no problems (had a run in with the ground staff last time I was down there and don't want a repeat - Lol)! I think this lady must have got out of bed the wrong way this particular day!

I'm glad that the weather is still holding out for you guys. I have always said I'd like to do a baltic cruise before, but not until I was older. Then we got the opportunity to do one in June and I have to say I was most surprised. Such lovely ports of call and many I would like to visit again. I especially loved the arrival and departure in Stockholm too and DD said that if I loved that then I would love the fjords too! We were also very lucky with our weather on our baltic cruise with sunshine all the way there and all the way back. Got a lovely tan!

Anyway, hope the weather remains good for this trip (we are having some good weather here too, bit nippy when the wind blows, but sheltered away from the wind it's lovely and warm).

May nor may not bump into you on the 20th Sept. If not I look forward to seeing you on the Xmas cruise. Have a relaxing break back home.

Gday James

Hope your Sunday has been good, i am just curious what is the name of the ship berthed ahead of you today. The weather looks good for you, only one more week until your leave, Ian that was doing the blog when you were on leave did a good job when the Arcadia was in refit, but he is not replacing you this time is he.

What ship is he on now??

Enjoy the rest of the week, looking forward to more updates to come.

Hallo to all on Arcadia

Kindest regards Geoff and Julieta Witts Perth.

PS. Yes the southwest around Margaret River is lovely, you get a nice drop of wine from that region aswell.

James Cusick said...

G'Day to Geoff and Julieta,

The ship in front of us today is the opposite to white and it is something you wear on your wrist to tell the time! You can even make a kilt out of that particular type of tartan.

Ian WS in on Ocean Village as Hotel Director. Ian will join Aurora as EP in 2010. Ian did a great job in the refit however there are no plans at present for him to write this blog.

On the 20th September we're looking forward to welcoming your twin brother Graham and his lovely wife Angie and the kids to the Indulgent Arcadia! Steve M our Senior Purser will be hosting them to lunch. Steve, by my side as I write, was telling me what a fab time he enjoyed when he met up with Graham in Leicester last leave. This only came about because Steve came across you both at the Commodore's Cocktail Party on Arcaida's 2009 Grand Voyage (Singapore to Sydney Leg).

Steve was so delighted to rekindle the friendship as the last time he saw you was at his Daughter's Christening back in 1993. Steve's daughter Kirsty has just excelled in her GCSEs - and Steve is understandably proud. Must dash now as I need to start packing my worldy goods in preparation for my home coming.

Best wishes to all 'down under'.
James.

Hello to Mary G - alias Scottylass!!! and Tom.......

Everyone is very pleased to see this high pressure over the Baltic - I hope you are similarly blessed in Scotland.....and that Bailey Castle is flying the Royal Standard!.........Have you made anymore treehangers for me?

Wish you were here - next time be sure to do a back to back. Can't beat a medley of 'hot and cold'.
