Gibraltar

Gibraltar - always a popular port for P&O Cruises passengers and ship's company. Plenty of shopping!

Meet passengers Ann and Colin Jones who are having a wonderful time on board Arcadia and can't wait to return. Ann is learning to play the piano and we got into conversation as she heard me play in The Palladium! It turns out that Ann is an Aunt of Aled Jones the famous singer and broadcaster! You just never know who you are going to meet next in this job!

Two passengers returned at the last minute and just made it - we had to put the 'brow' out for them...

The Rock of Gibraltar looking good in the mid day sunshine. As you can see lots of new apartment blocks in the harbour area.

Let's hope we see Ann and Colin back on board soon. Congratulations on your special wedding anniversary.

Meet from L to R Andy Rennie our 4th Officer and Denis Balic our 2nd Officer on the Bridge.

What's that over there Andy?
Always a variety of ships in the harbour and lots to see. The shipping lanes at Gibraltar are constantly busy. Who know next time we may be ships passing in the night.

Recently rebuilt. Terrance Conran has nothing on this...................

Early morning sun over the Rock. The taxis are getting lined up ready for a busy day.

Lovely sky! Arcadia cuts a dash wherever she goes.........

Arcadia alongside her berth - I can see a local 'bobby' in the picture. The old and the new in port together - each powerful in their own way.

Arcadia sails for Southampton, lots of people out on the decks reflecting on their last port of call for this cruise.

Good Day Everyone,

We are alongside in Gibraltar and the weather is still holding up beautifully! Gibraltar is a little county of Britain in the Mediterranean. The ship goes very quiet when everyone goes ashore to shop and see the sights, and all too soon it is over with a 1330 hours sail.

As you know I met Olly Smith when he visited Arcadia a few weeks back. You my be interested to know that Wine expert Olly Smith is to host web-tastic tasting sessions with P&O Cruises
TV wine expert Olly is to host four online wine tasting sessions to celebrate his latest venture, The Glass House, on board the newest P&O Cruises superliner, Azura. A different ‘webisode’ will be shown each Thursday throughout September, with the first going live at 7pm on Thursday 3 September 2009. They are viewable at www.pocruises.co.uk/wine. Each week viewers at home will taste along with Olly and can also enter a competition to win a case of wine. On the final week Olly will host a live web chat, answering questions on the wines and his latest ‘at sea’ venture. The culmination of the ‘webisodes’ will be a grand prize draw to win places on a trip with Olly to the Settesoli vineyard in Sicily to see how the house wine blend for Azura has been created and to be the first to taste it. *There are two prizes, each for two adults. Travel dates are to be confirmed but will be in mid-November for two days.

That's it for now folks, looking forward to two days at sea before our Sunday turnaround in Southampton. Arcadia will then point her bows northward for the Baltic. I hope all the weather front I see on Sky news will be well on the move by then as I have become very accustomed to this fine weather we have been enjoying in the Med. I have cruised all over the world and I think there is nothing like a Mediterranean Cruise to put the world to right...........to touch base with classical civilisation once in a while is a joy to behold.

To quote our Gibraltar Sail away ' We'll meet again'. I read in the one of the broadsheets today that Vera Lynn is heading up the charts with her new album - more power to Dame Vera!

Bye,

James.

We set precedent.............we don't follow.

Morning James

Guess your busy getting ready for turnaround and dealing with passenger queries.

Well you'll be pleased to know that the weather seems to have settled down a bit here at home. It's nice and sunny this morning with a slight breeze!

I hate the feeling when you get to your last port before home and you know that you are heading back to reality! You realise that you will be going back to mountains of washing and ironing, cleaning and day to day mundane chores (well for me anyway, being a lowly housewife)! I always feel pampered and special onboard so it always comes as a bit of a shock to the system when I get back and post cruise blues kick in!

Talking of which, I'd better get off the pc and get on with my chores ;-(

Hope your journey across the bay of biscay is kind to you all and I look forward to hearing from you as you get to the baltics.

Hi James,

Again Lovely pictures from Gibraltar,
those two passengers were luck not to have missed the Boat as the saying goes. Seems not much changes at sea, that has happened numerous times with Passenger and crew alike and will continue to happen.

Like the shot with the bobby and the magnificent Arcadia in the background she certainly towers over most things doesn't she.

Enjoy the Baltic's then i believe you go on leave after that don't you.

Looking forward to the next installments to come.

Kindest regards. Geoff and Julieta Witts Perth

HiJames,

Enjoying your blog and lovely photographs, they all bring back so many memories. Gibraltar has improved over the last few years again, thankfully.
Weather here has been awful, lots of rain, sorry we're not on board with you, especially going to The Baltic.
Off to S upon A next week to see family, hope weather is better there.
Hope to see you soon.
Cheers for now, Win & Jad

Well James,

If you needed a wine expert why didn't you say!!! We have just got back from an undercover mission to one of those wine festivals that are so wonderful here in Italy - fantstic and great to blend into the background.

We just wanted to say a big hello to those on board who may remember us - Susan and her friends in The Orchid in particular. What has hapened to Kumar from the gym?

As you know "James" works out as part of his work and I of course like to keep my mind active so I will give you a "Sit Rep" once in a while to keep you posted. Of course we know what you are all up to anyway - no need for webcams or blogs really not for someone like me! Great shirt by the way - I can see you James!!
