Gone are the days of doom and gloom in St Petersburg, formerly Leningrad. Russia is realising it's true potential. The Cruise Ship Berths currently under construction will accommodate no less than seven ships. This is one amazing show home!!
Good Day Everyone,
Lovely to be back blogging after a very busy day on board this ship! Do you ever get one of those days when every time you check the clock another hour has gone? Lots of emails today, a couple of meetings and phone calls galore.............and I did host a table at the Gold Tier Portunus Lunch. Executive Chef Trevor Connolly had a delicious menu for us and the conversation flowed.
Gold Tier Lunches are great as they are for our most loyal passengers therefore they love cruising and especially travelling with P&O Cruises, so I learned a lot about their 'arrangements' for their Christmas Cruises and Winter Holidays on our ships!! The weather is holding up a dream - way beyond our wildest expectations and the sun beds were in full use today ( Tuesday at sea ).
Last Saturday and Sunday we were in St Petersburg. The new passenger terminal was much enjoyed and worked a treat for us all. The logistics of a two day call is carefully planned and was executed with perfection!.......so modest we are!! If you check back to last month on this blog there is another 'From Russia with love' post which gives you more details on the new terminal and some interesting photographs.
Early morning light as Arcadia arrives at the new Terminal in St Petersburg.
I asked Kathryn Gillham our Port Presenter to help me out with her top tips for St Petersburg so here we go............................
Kathryn’s top 5, not to be missed sights in St Petersburg.
1. Hermitage – Also known as the Winter Palace is the highlight attraction for most visitors to this great city, and I certainly agree with that. The immense collection of treasures and exquisitely decorated rooms make a visit here a real delight, but even more so if you take a private evening tour as I did last night. Included was a private classical recital which received a standing ovation, followed by a glass of champagne, it was a real privilege to be in the most famous art gallery in the world after it was closed to the public and an experience I shall not forget.
2. Catherine’s Palace – One of Catherine the Great's favourite Palaces, and with its ornate spender, it is one of mine too. A visit to the famous Amber room is a must, declared by some to be the 8th wonder of the world, was definitely the highlight of this morning’s tour with not only myself, but for all who went on tour with me.

3. Peterhof Palace – What can I say about Peterhof, other than how spectacular the water fountains and gardens are and again a Palace that should not be left off any itinerary to St Petersburg.
4. Church on the Spilled Blood – One of the smaller buildings of interest, this candy coloured Russian Orthodox Church is one of the most photographed. It is a real jewel of a building both inside and out, and a short trip here, whether to take a picture or to peek inside is certainly recommended.
5. St Petersburg Ballet – A night at the ballet is a classic way to spend a night here and what ballet could be better than the famous St Petersburg Ballet, with a glass of Russian Champagne at the interval. It’s an experience not to be missed and one that I think the passengers who went there last night will remember for a long time, everyone came back with plenty of smiles.
ends.
Thanks also the Kathryn for sharing some wonderful photographs with us.
I love Catherine the Great, she certainly liked the good things in life and she really was the Queen of Bling!
On Monday we were in Tallinn, a quieter day as we were the only ship in town, not like last time when we were along side Queen Victoria! ( you can visit 'older posts' to view my previous Tallinn blog).
Hope your week is all you planned it to be. Best wishes from the Arcadians..........
Bye for now,
James.
Money is like manure - if you spread it around it does a lot of good!

I went to Leningrad - as it was then - in 1968 on the SS Nevasa. It was part of an Educational Cruise and for someone from my background, was the height of luxury, even though we slept in dormitories of 12 and shared a bathroom between 3 dorms!
I can remember everything being grey and navy blue - no colour at all except at the Hermitage. But as a 15 year old, I really didn't appreciate the treasures I was viewing. Your splendid photos are a joy - now that I'm at a more appreciative age!!!
Many thanks.
Gill
Hi Gill,
When I first went to Leningrad in 1984 the dock was lined with armed gaurds all in grey. How times have changed. Thanks for your insight to life on board Navasa. I am sure there are other readers who have some stories to tell of thier adventures on the school ships. Reassuring to know that now you will be in a bed instead of a hammock!
James.
Hi James
Can you hang on to that weather please, we join Arcadia on Sunday for the Med cruise. Looks like you are going on leave, so we will not see you. Enjoy you leave.

G'Day James,
Nice to see the top five places to go to when in St Petersburg, i don't think Russia is one place i will ever get to, i will get to Finland one day as we will travel with our neighbour one time.Mind you we went on a cruise together back in 1997, and said we must do this again in 1999, as we had a great time, we have been on camping holidays since but not got around to another cruise. The time just goes too quickly as you get older the years just fly by. So we are looking to cruise out of Freo next year sometime on a P&O ship of course. Both the Ocean village ships are re-locating down here eventually i think one this year and then one next year. It will give us then Four P&O ships to choose from as the Aussie market is continuing to grow like other world markets.
Anyway James please say Hi to Steve.
Managed to get some gardening done yesterday, we harvested 31kg of Sweet potatoes. so the neighbours got some and we still have heaps left, managed to roast some last night with a lovely leg of Lamb. It is so nice to have garden fresh veggies.
Enjoy Oslo tomorrow. looking forward to the updates still to be posted.
Kindest regards Geoff and Julieta Witts Perth
Hi James
I loved my recent visit to St Petersburg. Word of warning to those who plan to visit. The tours to the evening at the hermitage and the ballet seem to book up as soon as the shore excursions go on sale. So if you really want to do these trips be sure to look out for the excursions going online!
Also I had some "russian champagne" - not to my taste I must admit! Tasted more like lager to me than Moet!
I never thought I'd ever get Russia. OH has been to Moscow many years ago and he was not impressed. But I have to say I thought St Petersburg was a lovely city. I think he'd rather have been on a golf course though than in a museum, but to be fair he didn't grumble once (Lol) ;-)
We went to Peterhof on day 1 and then Catherine's palace on day 2. They are very regimented in getting groups around the museums aren't they?? But I guess so many visitors pass through each day it has to have some kind of organisation.
I have very often just taken the kids off up to London (when they were younger) and headed to the museums. A favourite of mine is the Victoria and Albert Museum. It's then a short stroll up the road to Knightsbridge and we can go window shopping in Harrods! Oh and food shopping of course. They have a wonderful food hall! ;-0)
Well the webcam says your in Tallin today, but I think you must have altered the itinerary around as you say you were in Tallinn on Monday. No view from the webcam so possibly no satellite signal either!
Have a good day James. Speak again soon

Hi Elaine,
I would love to say that I took the kids to London for the day and window shopped at Harrods, we were in London in April this year but took us 7.5 weeks to get there on board Arcadia and after a lengthy stay, 28hrs to fly home.Russia on a cruise is a dream.
Oh well, 26 sleeps and we are off on a two week Fiji/South Pacific cruise with P&O Oz, not too many places to go in the South Pacific, we have already been to all 7 ports many times.
Looking forward to our 7 week Grand Voyage on Aurora Feb. 2010 but still no Russia.
How lucky you are in the UK. Europe and beyond is so close.I do envy you very much.
Hi James, I was hoping you would be onboard for the 4 October sailing as my boss's parents are cruising (the ones that were on Oceana recently) and I would have loved for them to have met you. Another time. Loving the blog still.
Regards to all
Marina

Well there you have it! You think we are fortunate to have Europe etc on our doorstep, yet my OH would so love to do down under! But I do not fly and even if I did, the thought of a 20 hours plus flight is just so daunting. You are off to the South Pacific which I would love to do too (plan on doing a world cruise one day - it's on my to do list)!
If you do get the chance to fly over here - do seriously consider doing a Baltic cruise. I wasn't sure what to expect from the trip, but we had wonderful weather from start to finish and the ports were lovely. The only one that I didn't really like was the port of Gydnia in Poland, but we went on tour to Gdansk which was much better! The highlight for me was St Petersburg as I said before.
I have always lived within an hour's train journey of London. As a little girl I never went to London. It's only since I have been married that I have visited it so often (been married 30 years next Feb)! My OH works up in London, so for him it's just business as usual! What did you think of London whilst you were here. Because I live in the countryside I actually find London far too busy for my comfort! I most certainly wouldn't want to live there! But it's nice to go up there, have a nice day/evening out up there and then hop on the train back home again.
Only a few more days and James will be off on his break! James, have you started your packing?
Elaine (aurorabore) :-)
