The Unsung Heros

Atmospheric P&O Cruises poster from days past.

Good Day all,

Ever wonder how your baggage turns up almost magically outside your cabin when you embark and disappear the night before you leave? How all the foyers, bars and lifts are always clean and shining? Here is the secret!

The unsung heroes of the accommodation department are the Accommodation Assistants. This team is made up of Indian and Filipino Hotel Staff that form the back bone of the department. They undertake the task of bringing your baggage on board and sorting it so that your bag ends up outside your cabin. During the sea days they are busy keeping the ship squeaky clean from all those public toilets to the gleaming glasses around the atrium staircase. They vacuum all the stairway, foyers and bar carpets. They undertake upholstery cleaning and carpet shampooing as well.

In port days they are always at hand at the gangway to assist our passengers get on and off the ship, and keeping the ship in 100% tip top order. They keep the spa stocked up with towels and keep the gym equipment clean for use everyday. Like clockwork, everyday this operation goes on 24 hours at a steady pace.

Meet Roger who cleans my office amongst other duties - the best cleaner since the ship came into service!

Finally when you are ready to leave the cruise ship they collect your baggage from outside your Staterooms and have it off the ship ready for you to collect as you disembark.

Let’s give a round of applause to these unsung heroes who provide so much to your memorable holiday but are mostly standing in the background.

Another beautiful sea day and the outside temperature has dropped to 79 degrees F. I managed to get a nice break this afternoon on a sun bed with the gentle sea breeze and hot sun, the afternoon Purser's Grill - 30 minutes on the front and 30 minutes on the back! Chilled Perrier water to refresh the body and maintain temperature. You have to keep the tan up for this glamorous cruise business that we are in......

The Japanese Immigration Inspection has been running smoothly. The port talk for Shanghai was packed out today as you can imagine. So much to see on this Grand Tour of the Far East here on board the great white liner - ARCADIA.

Best wishes,
James.

'Always aim for the stars'!

That's it for now.

Hi James,

I have just clicked on to the blog and there you are as if by magic! How you find time to fit in a blog I will never know.

Its good to see what happens to all of our bags - personally I feel sorry for the boys in "Accommodation" especially when you consider we took home 114KG in total on the aeroplane from Singapore and we left two pieces of luggage on the ship!! Goodness only knows what was in there but nothing went astray and we got everything home in one piece!

I expect it will start to cool down a little bit now for you & I guess it will be a week before it starts to warm up again - not that I am jealous of course....& James, remember, be careful showing off your white bits!! You don't want to dazzle the Bridge when coming in to port!!

Enjoy Japan & I look forward to the photos which I know will be amazing - Love to all on board.

"M" & James (AKA Louise & Tony). xx

Praise indeed due to the unsung, unseen heroes. They must be strong handling all those heavy bags.

We're still trying to decide whether to put a couple of bags on at Southampton next year, or take all 6 on the aircraft. But dragging 6 through the airport, if there are no trolleys, may be tricky for two of us!!!! Guess that means 2 go on at Southampton then!

You all work hard for the benefit of the passengers, i am sure that most applaud the hard work that goes on for their comfort.

Looking forward to the pictures from Japan.

Indeed a round of applause for the unsung heroes working away in the background, getting every bit of luggage to the right place, well done. Thanks James for the blogs don't know how you have the time, very much appreciated, looking forward to the next lot of photos.

Really enjoying your daily blogs and almost tempted to try a World Cruise.

One thing that I should love to know is where do all the "behind the scenes" people get their rest and relaxation. What do they get up to off duty and where do they go to get some good fresh sea air.
Is there entertainment organised for them?
Their hard work is SO appreciated by the passengers. They really are great.
