Good Day Everyone,
As I lay in my bed I was sure that I could hear the public announcement calling out – ‘Good Morning Vietnam’. Then thank God I realised that I was dreaming and the reality then hit me that this was the morning that we were going to visit Ho Chi Minh City. Wow!
For sure I was not the only one who was off to the big city; there were over 1240 more who had the same intention. The local guide warned us that the journey may be slow partly due to the traffic and the fact that police regulations limit the speeds. He was right, progress was slow but nevertheless we eventually arrived in Uncle Ho’s city.
The first stop was the National Museum where we saw the artefact's that have been collected and displayed with great effect and perhaps the star exhibit is the mummy of a woman who had died in the mid 19th century. Whilst here we also enjoyed the colourful display of the traditional Vietnamese water puppets.
As we drove around the city our erstwhile Marco Polo passengers were somewhat dumb struck by the traffic, there appeared to be motorcycles coming out of every street and alleyway.
The French inspired Notre Dame Cathedral was another highlight of the city and it is interesting to note that many brides come here and have their photographs taken even if they have not been married there.
The lunch date was at a hotel set a short distance from the well known Rex Hotel and was a spectacular success and as we enjoyed our flavoursome meal a local troupe entertained us with traditional music and dances.
Off on the coach again and this time we saw the Chinese Temple brightly decorated and the incense spirals were smouldering away and bathing us in their fragrance.
Our final stop was at the lacquer factory where local Vietnamese artists make and decorate trays, pots, screens and a thousand and one other things all of which were so tempting to buy. Many of the passengers succumbed to the temptations and left the city loaded with reminders of their time there.
This was a memorable day in the sunshine of South Vietnam and will be long remembered as a highlight of Arcadia’s Inaugural Grand Voyage.
Thanks for that Graham and for your fantastic photos.

Ho Chi Minh traffic starts to build up.Good Day Everyone,
Hope you enjoyed your St Patrick's Day. It was a busy morning for me at my office and by the time afternoon came I just did not have the energy to go ashore - sounds crazy doesn't it - to come all this way on a cruise to Vietnam and not go ashore. However I did enjoy my run ashore in Halong Bay so at least I have a feel for the county.
Instead I rested my body on a sun lounger above the Crow's Nest with a lovely breeze over the open decks to keep me cool. Not a soul in sight as most people were ashore - heaven! I did manage Fish and Chips with mushy peas for my lunch form the Neptune Grill and a glass of the black stuff! In the evening the Entertainment Staff did a great job in very tastefully decorating The Globe and The Rising Sun, which did a roaring trade with singing and dancing. I met some friends before dinner and played the piano for them - all the favourite tunes.........and then had dinner in The Meridian Restaurant. One the way 'home' I bumped into some regulars - and we had a night cap in the Royal Box in Intermezzos! It was a most enjoyable day on board Arcadia.
Thankfully my good friend Graham did get ashore and here is his report on the day.
Here we go............

Hi James and all aboard Arcadia.
Hope your having a nice time cruising to Cambodia, the reports are great reading, along with the colorful pictures, Vietnam is definitly on the must visit list, the water puppets look good. You brighten my day as it is the first website i log onto each and everyday.
enjoy your time in Cambodia,i am sure it will be a great place, the one thing i notice about the Asian people is there hospitality, and no matter how much they have or dont have they always manage to have a smile on their face.
Enjoy your evening.

Fabulous photos and report on Vietnam, thank you both. We absolutely loved Vietnam (there 2 years ago) and are now rather sad that we didn't join your World trip earlier, but we also are coming on board in Singapore and really looking forward to it. It has been wonderful to follow your blog of the journey up to now, thank you for all your hard work.
Best wishes, Claudia and Freddy
Ho Chi Minh looks great - have wanted to go there ever since I saw Miss Saigon!
Thanks for the on-going reports James. I have really enjoyed every step of this journey
I'll be gutted when this worldie ends - what will I do then, might have to actuall do some work whilst at work! Love it.
Hello James,
A belated Happy St Patricks Day - Tony & I celebrated Italian/Irish style with Antipasti followed by Irish Stew & Colcannon!! Its true, the Tuscans really enjoyed themselves but we have been the same as you ....last night to bed at 0430!! Its no good we cannot keep up anymore & are now exhausted!!
We were delighted to hear from our friends Bill & Debbie & Brian & Alison Fleckney on board and have challenged Brian to get his photo on your blog!! Alison seems to get in all the shots and we thought maybe Brian had jumped ship! See what you can do for us!!
Again wonderful photographs and how you ever manage to remember so many people is amazing but hats off to you...you do it. Congratulations on a fantastic blog.
Louise & Tony,
ps tell Kumar in the gym we are continuing our visits to the gym and Tony has been doing the usual 10KM runs complete with his 20KG pack on his back!! The Italians think he is mad & know he isn't Italian!!
Thank you James and Graham for yet another fantastic blog entry. As all your readers are finding, this blog is a constant source of encouragement, interest, fascination and fun.
On this particular entry we give our credit to those responsible for the organisation that goes into each port call with regards to the trips. It is always a source of wonderment and amazement to us on every cruise as to how so many people can be despatched to all parts of the city in question so quickly and with the least effort for the passengers, (but not for the staff I presume!!) So often one can hear chunnering and impatience from passengers, those that need to get a life of course or get out more, but our praise goes to those that cause this regular event to go off every time seemingly without hitches. As on this visit, 1200 passengers in 22 minutes, wow.
Many thanks
Steve and Maragret Ackers
Sorry you didn't manage to get ashore, James, but sometimes the lure of the sunbed is too strong -especially when it's quiet on deck.
I can remember a few years ago watching Miss Saigon at the Bristol Hippodrome while our second daughter was actually there in the real place in Vietnam on her Round the World back-packing trip. It was a surreal feeling.

OMG
Khay
My wife and I will be visiting Phu My ,Ho Chi Min City for one day on Diamond Princess cruise in March.
We like to do our own thing.Maybe museum and laquer factory are not our cup of tea, or maybe I am wrong as I am interested in the war history, is that covered in the museum?
A relative purchased some beautiful bed linen on her visit.I wonder where this would be located, the shopping I mean?
So should we do our own thing, or is that risky?
Thank you for your interesting Blog.Appreciate you sharing
Don(Sydney).
