Happy St Valentine's Day!

Good Day Everyone and Happy St Valentine's Day!

I hope you are having a good day - we have had one of those 'special' days here on board ARCADIA, a kind of a cross between Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year!!!! From the mad rush of Room Service in the morning with their Champagne Breakfasts right though to the Florrie of Butlers in black tailed coats running around our top Suites with all the private arrangements going on........., from exclusive luncheon parties to pre dinner cocktails........it is all going on aboard Arcadia. I am fortunate in that I get invited to a few of these glamorous occasions - which is lovely! Passengers with butler service like to entertain and why not - after all they have paid for it!

Bye the way - Hello to Paul and Chis - I hope you are keeping up with the blog on your Grand Land Tour of the Far East and Australia - we are missing you on board........ and look forward to seeing you return in soon.

Commodore Burgoine has also had a very busy day with no less than three weddings! After all this is St Valentine's Day!!! Love is very much in the air! There have also been a number of 'engagements' today and cards, flowers and champagne have been flying around the ship! Our Florist have been flat out all day and still taking orders.........

I had a busy morning with regular business, followed by morning Coffee with Esther Rantzen CBE, who is an 'A list' Broadcaster and TV Personality in the UK. After this we did a tour of the Galley with Executive Chef Trevor Connolly and a tour of the Storerooms with Connie Fernandes our Hotel Stores Manager accompanied by Orla Beyrill our Assistant Hotel Stores Manager - regular blog readers will know all these personalities from previous blogs and they are a great support to me, there is no one on my team that I think ' wish they were not here!' We worked closely with our Fleet Personnel Department and Hotel Services Department in Southampton to build a ' Dream Team' for this Grand Voyage and you know what ' Dreams do come true'. Trevor, Esther and Orla all ended up in CAFE VIVO for a coffee and invited me to join them.

Orla and I then hosted Esther and her sister to lunch in The Meridian Restaurant and the conversation was non stop! Trevor joined us for coffee. Many of us ( including me) remember Ester for her very successful TV series 'That's Life' which was the first ever UK programme to really take on consumer affairs. Land people will recall that Esther was in the recent TV series Celebrities in the Jungle - which was filmed in near Brisbane!

After some more ship's business the evening began and the whirlwind of invitations to cover.
Once again a day to remember on board ARCADIA...........the ship that never stops!!

Hope you had a good day wherever you may be. We continue to cruise the waters of the great South land which is Southern Australia - this vast country - and although last night was frolicsome today have been nice and steady with the occasional jolt that lets you know we are on the bosoms of the deep!! I love Australia and although I have enjoyed that last six winters in the Caribbean, USA and Mexico, there is a connection here with the British and the Australians that cannot be put into words.

This blog is never meant to be a 'brochure for POC' but I cannot resit the line that our fantastic Marketing Team under the direction of Philip Price use - 'I am a shiver of excitement and I am with you all the way!' - as this is the feeling we are experiencing on board ARCADIA as we cruise this Australian Coastal - the Australians call it a 'coastal' however if you were doing this in Europe you would probably be going from Southampton to Turkey! I must find this out from our Navigator Alex and report back to you.

All I can tell you that is that is an unique voyage and those of us on board in the Ship's Company are very privileged to be experiencing Arcadia's Inaugural Voyage 'down under' - this cannot and will not be repeated and the name ARCADIA is held in such esteem and in such love and affection. The people are magic to say the least.......I have listened to more stories than I can remember - I even met a lady today from Sydney - Carmen, and she is hoping that her son can be our pilot to bring us into Sydney harbour - the stories are endless.....................and time it too short.

Love to all on this special day,
James

The land mass that is the Australasian Continent is no mean distance!

To put that distance into context, Sydney to Perth is equivalent in milage from Cardiff to Moscow.

As I recall the 6 week voyage home in April 1965 aboard another P&O liner Iberia of Harland & Wolf constuction, was notable for the week spent just getting from Sydney to Perth!

We will be most interested to hear of Arcadia's reception in Port Adelaide. The Passenger Terminal atOuter Harbour is a monument to a bygone era of line passages of other late and great P&O ships.

Hi James

Happy valentines day to you too! What a busy day you've had onboard. Hope you had plenty of red roses onboard. My OH can look forward to a £20 valentines meal deal for £20! I'm pushing the boat out (pardon the pun)! It's actually very good value for money. As it was only our wedding anniversary the week before and he took me out last weekend I can't expect him to take me out this weekend too!

As I told my daughter the other day, I'm finding it really odd that it's her night when it's our day and her day when it's your night!! Just last week they were behind us in time! I get so confused (I'll say it's my age, but in reality I'm not old) ;-)

Esther was actually very good in the jungle this year! Is she a passenger or is she doing talks onboard? I remember the days of That's life. Excellent programme (in it's time)!

Hope Carmen's son manages to be your pilot! That will no doubt make her day.

Just re reading what I put and I see I said about the meal deal price twice. Doesn't make sense (age again James)! Sorry!!!!!!!!!!

BTW the meal deal was at M & S! For £20 you got from a selected list a starter, main course, side dish, dessert, bottle of wine and a single stem rose. I chose a bottle of wine that was £8.99 and my main course was £9.99, so that was nearly all my £20 spent. It is excellent value if you can find something from each course and it makes me feel like I'm eating onboard, of course minus an excellent waiter to serve it ;-(

James
We love your blog, a must to read as soon as we log on. You make this cruise so interesting, the ship, the ports and the people, whether crew or passengers. How we would love to try it one day, sadly health considerations dictate that we only can do 2 or 3 week cruises.

We hope to be back on Arcadia in June and September and look forward to seeing you again. You may remember us, we have mutual friends in Grimsby, who were on your table last year.

another great entry and what a busy day yesterday was for you all.

Your comments about all the suite parties is interesting - I quite agree. Are you likely to be on board Arcadia's World Cruise next year? My husband will be 60 towards the end of that voyage and we hope to have a party to celebrate - and an invitation could find its way to you, if you're on board!

Looking forward to more entries.

Gill

I spoke to my son David (Coxn) last night and he is as enthusiastic as you about the Grand Voyage as it makes a lovely change from the Carribbean. Keep up the good work on the blog, althought I am amazed you find the time! Look forward to seeing you when I join in Hong Kong. Thanks for brightening up my days.

We are proudly the Continent of Australia, quite different to the" Australasian continent"!
Where did that come from?
If you look in an atlas it will say Australia and not Australasia.
Think that that was a blooper or typo.
When referring to Australasia you are looking at Australia and very near by Asia.
We are Australia! Our land mass in Australia is no mean distance,to include the Asia part you would need to fly or sail by sea,we are very separate.
Please let us know if you were serious as I believe that the speak was about the distance from Albany WA to Adelaide SA.in Australia.

Thanks for the continued interesting reports James. I hope Daniel managed to cope with the three weddings on Valentine's Day, and didn't get too stressed out! He was telling us about them on our Xmas cruise.

Hi James,
What a terrific idea this blog of yours is. Because some dear friends are on the Arcadia (and travelling all the way to Southhampton) I decided to log onto the website that was published in the local Perth newspaper and discovered your most informative diary. Well done. If you come across John and Glenise Newman from Safety Bay in WA please say hello from me (Cindy). Glenise is recovering from cancer and has been very ill but this trip is a trip of a lifetime booked by John for her to enjoy.
